| | Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks!Page 1 of 3 (1, 2, 3) | So, at this stage of life many of us are or are close to being an empty nester. Empty nesters enjoy perks that they just didn't have when the kids were still in the nest.
Although I've been an empty nester for many years since my kids are in their 30's I just completed a one year stint of my son/grandson sharing my home. They are now moving on to their own place in about 10 days. I am quite looking forward to getting back to enjoying some perks that come with once again being an empty nester. :)
Here are a few of the perks I am looking forward to getting back to enjoying:
Running around the house naked. Knowing that when I want to eat something I put in the cupboard/fridge it will be there when I want it. Turning up the stereo! Spontaneous get togethers with friends at my house. No more treehouse! I don't want to see another episode of the Cat in the Hat for a long time to come.
What are some of the perks you are enjoying or are looking forward to enjoying as an empty nester?

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 3:11:34 AM | No treehouse? Heck, I never had one, and always wanted one. If I had the moeny, I'd have one added tomorrow.
My only really good thing about a (now COMPLETELY) empty nest is, that I no longer have to pretend to be a careful, thoughtful responsible person, in order to provide a positive example to someone else.
Most annoying thing so far: I have to accept that EVERYTHING that's a mess in my house is now MY fault entirely. I miss having a teenager to blame.

This.
I learned very quickly on this parenting path that my father's mantra of 'Do as I say, not as I do' only works with certain children and therefore I had to be seen to be the person I wanted my children to become if I was to have any influence on those aspects of their development.
Roll on the day when I can dance naked around the willow tree at midnight and be safe in the knowledge that no one is peeking at me through their bedroom window wondering 'WTH is Mum doing now?'

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 5:39:02 AM | My kids are now 27 and 31, so I've been an empty nester for some time...
At first it was wonderful! I didn't have to worry about where they were, what they were doing or if there was food in the house to feed them when they returned... no more friends over messing up my house... no more monitoring of their chores, homework and all that...
During those first few years I wasn't interested in dating anyone with kids at home. I enjoyed my freedom and wanted someone else at the same stage.
But all that freedom and stuff starts to feel lonely after a while. Frankly, I started missing the chaos.
So I got a dog. | |
|
| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 5:39:48 AM | No more walking in the door to be greeted with "you're late" followed by "what's for dinner"
No more schoolbooks on every flat surface No more of that fresh point of view More more loud, echoing laughter
Now I'm making myself cry. !!!! KIDDING !!!!
I dig privacy and quiet. Best, I no longer have to maintain a hidden stash of peanut butter, toilet paper, tampons, and pet food.

funny :0)
The perks: you have more free time, that's for sure. And with that, enjoying the many hobbies & passions in that little brain of mine provides up there. lol. And creativity is uninterrupted.
Yet to all the creative people in my life,it will always be open in my house. I welcome those who can show their 'artistic freedom ' which will never be censored or denied. me casa, su casa....
And jsuk op, I built a adult tree house here last summer, but yet to climb up there naked as of yet. lol

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 8:10:23 AM | Not sure but when the OP says 'treehouse' I think she's referring to the name of a Canadian Kids TV station.
I thrive on my 'own time' and having nobody in my house most of the time. The irony is that i grew up in a village in which the division of families wasn't like here. There were no 'empty nesters' because cousins, aunts, etc. were as much a part of ones' family as dad, brothers, etc. Family included any blood relastive and even the odd disadvantagd soul who hung around. When I return home it's much the same today but just less children. I like it for a couple of weeks but then happy to leave and return to my solitude. Fortunately my girlfriend and i both like having our own places.
Nieces and nephews come to stay with me every so often. Fortunately they have their own suite and we can see each together but still have our space. I like it now that they are older as i can give them the keys to the car, some money to go skiing or whatever and they're gone for a couple days.

Yup, "Treehouse" is a channel on TV that is kids stuff 24 hours. It's a great learning channel. Sorry for the confusion but it was fun reading the tree house comments. LOL

Yup, "Treehouse" is a channel on TV that is kids stuff 24 hours. Off topic. I've sometimes wondered who exactly are the kids watching TV at 2:45 AM on a Wednesday night during the school year. Before the age of 10 I doubt if I had ever been up after 11PM...maybe not even up after 10PM.

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 10:05:19 AM | OK. I admit the word naked drew me in.
So this is the vision I'm getting after reading all of your posts.
A bunch of over 45 men and women frollicking naked between the tree house and livingroom, with all of the drapes wide open, all of the lights on, the cartoons blasting on the TV while Janes dog lies on the floor looking up at everyone.
Can I come over too?
Oh if only our kids could see us now.

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 10:31:51 AM | Truth is I enjoy all the perks you mention but would much rather be elsewhere.. In the throws of wild passion and madly in love..
P.S. Never run around my house in the buff even though my windows are the special kind you can not see inside of.. lol I am liable to pass by a mirror in the buff and shall I say enough is enough is.. lol

Nativeroc, you live in Montreal. I remember Montreal's hot humid nights this time of year...passion is great but sometimes it's the 'no touch' type or else you find yourself sticking together in the non-sexual way.

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 3:23:40 PM | Seeing this post header made me instantly laugh and think of that movie 'Failure to Launch' where Terry Bradshaw plays Matthew McConaughey's father who wants his son to finally move out, so he can have the freedom to go naked around the house. | |

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 9:21:42 PM | I will admit it is kinda nice not to have to stifle the squeals and moans.... I don't have to go through a list of potential meals to get a green light I no longer have to drive 3 hours to rowing regattas in the hours before dawn then drive home again after a full day I can watch the odd bit of crappy TV without teenage eyes rolling :)
Good job there ARE perks as I miss her a lot :/
|
| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 9:31:33 PM | | Cooking naked! I dont know. I just like to have a system about things. My one bath apt has a detached bathroom (away from bedroom) and when I wake up to do my duties I walk naked. Then the kitchen is right there. May as well make breakfast! Why go back and forth to get dressed? Ill do that on another trip. It is truly liberating. | |

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/20/2012 11:04:51 PM | Since my 22 year-old daughter left for college four years ago, I have loved the absence of:
Wet towels on the floor. Huge kitchen messes when I wake up in the morning. Late night arguments about curfews ("We're just starting another movie") The disappearance of my sexy black T-shirts and athletic socks. Knowing the toilet paper will be refilled, instead of an empty cardboard tube grinning at me.
I miss having a houseful of teenagers. THEY laughed at my jokes and said I was "fun."
I also enjoy:
Walking around naked. Dancing when inspired. Interacting with my daughter now that she appreciate me.

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/21/2012 5:50:42 AM | Decided to hit a secluded stretch of beach around where they made the 'Truman Show' movie and it was an area known for being a nude beach. There's usually not many people there if any at all and there was almost nobody there the time I decided to strip down even though nobody else was going natural. However, right when I was ready to take off my jeans I saw a woman playing with her large dog about 100 yards away and I was afraid the dog might mistake me for one of his rubber hot dog squeeze toys, so I decided it was not worth the risk and chickened out. : - P
On another note, I hope you people changed your locks or took back your keys, because kids have a tendency to surprise visit-AWKWARD!

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/21/2012 6:26:37 AM | My kids didn't live with my ex and I, her kids did and they were in their late teens, so when I got my own place I loved it. My tools didn't disappear, and the garage stayed clean (her son). The lights weren't left on in every room of the house (her daughter). The furniture wasn't rearranged every couple of months (my ex). And knowing I can have pizza and beer for breakfast lunch and dinner if I want to, is worth it's weight in gold, lol. (I haven't done that, but I can! Yea)
Ordering pizza right now, lmao.

| Empty Nester - Nakedness and other perks! Posted: 7/21/2012 8:06:31 AM | | I'm looking forward to selling the house and buying a condo where there's no yard work. Also looking forward to not having dirty dishes left all over, dirty socks ditto, having to be quiet until noon lest I wake up my son, and nagging about homework or chores. But I will miss him anyway. | |

Ahh you mean she had no central air conditioning or salt water pool to cool off in? lol
