Right decision, or too harsh???

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/26/2012 4:55:29 PM | I've no idea about right or wrong, but what a daft bint. I spend a large portion of my time in work dealing with kids and the stupid stuff that happens online (and out of school) these are kids though. From what I read it wasn't that big a deal till she got banned. Although I'm sure some people perceived her comments as racist and offensive. | |

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/26/2012 5:48:30 PM | | It's more to do with the Olympics than anything else.... Possibly under pressure from our government. We're about the only country where the mere mention of ethnic minority in a less than favourable light, is considered a serious offence. Even stating the truth is often considered racist. | |

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/26/2012 6:17:19 PM | | i work with a greek there country is getting a lot of right wing views and votes so what is said there is acceptable but not in this country, the man i work with has strong right wing views, and we have discussed the damage people do to themselves by posting comments on twitter and facebook | |

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 12:41:43 AM | To be honest I think this is the Olympic political machine posturing its hatred towards Greek politics. Anybody who's views don't fit in with the far left are an enemy of the EU. Had the comment been made by somebody else, it would have gone unnoticed.
You have to read between the lines.

I'd like to see a filter on here so we can, if desired, exclude Facebook & Twitter users from making initial contact. I'll get me coat.....

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 2:35:41 AM | I guess its all down to the rules.
If the Olympic committee judge that the comments broke rules then the decision was right.
All to often people question a judgment when a rule that is, or seems to be, ridiculous is broken yet the rule and consequence for breaking it is known and published and was knowingly broken so the consequence is applied.
Has political correctness gone wildly out of control? Yes.
With its profile of unity do the Olympic guidelines and rules err on the side of caution? Probably
I have to agree with earlier comments - have a care as to what you post on social networking sites

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 3:18:46 AM | | It wasn't particularly funny and in all honesty she should of been thrown out for the timing of said joke and where she wrote it more than the content. Twitter is a great concept but some people are just too stupid to know what to say and when to say it. | |
|
| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 3:27:53 AM | There is a party in Greece that propose using land mines to stop immigrants entering the country .There is also a daily attacks on immigrants in Greece .Am I surprised that someone from Greece made that tweet? Why would I be ?
I am glad she is not coming to the Olympics .We have come a far way since black athletes were banned from entering the Olympics .Glad the racist is banned .Wish they would also block the diplomats from countries that are stopping women from performing .
I also think people who always complain about ''political correctness gone mad '' are sick and would fit more in times gone by .What is so wrong with treating people as you would like yourself and love ones treated ?

"Sick"? You must feel very strongly against these non PC'ers? Of course by your statement I'll presume that you think it's ok to be offended by bendy busses, black boards, nursery rhymes, pork, alcohol, music and of course christmas? Because these are the areas where PC gone mad is genuinely exclaimed.

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.(1 Corinthians 13:11)
Sorry but I refuse to enter into a childish debate with an adult.

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 9:44:09 AM | | too harsh, the pc brigaade/ cant say that, really pisses me off, it was joke.back in day bernard manning 70s ect, once got accused of being racist, he said im not racist in insult everyone black white irish ect. | |
|
| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 10:18:29 AM | | Maybe it was to harsh? But surely she should have known better? and said something after the games than to risk getting banned? Saying that the PC brigade and elf&saftey have gone to far. | |

Classic pc brigade response, when someone proves you wrong just bury your head in the sand.
Political correctness is not a childish debate, Corinthians, is that the bible? to me that's childish along with santa claus and the tooth fairy, but each to their own.

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 2:10:17 PM | The speculation in the press today about who was going to light the cauldron with the olympic torch, who would it be? I thought they could use the torch to set fire to thatchers hair and throw her in. | |
|
| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 3:18:18 PM | | Actually her own people voted for her to be banned from Olympic. She was stupid to make such silly comment on tweet special what has been happening on tweet lately and she should know better. That was joke she should have shared with her friends and family in private. Nevertheless it was very funny and more important I was laughing at her. | |
|
| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/27/2012 8:33:10 PM | | I feel the punishment did not fit the crime. What she said was funny and not really offensive in my opinion, and really a statement of fact. She should have been allowed to compete. | |

|
| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 7/28/2012 6:54:30 AM | I have heard stories of way back in the days where some stupid black man would pin a tail on a jump up and down as a monkey to cheering fans in a pub . The fact that some idiot is happy with people being racist to him and that some other idiot think it's cool that the idiot finds it funny ,does not make any of what those idiots are doing right .
And stop blaming Britain for the Greek being kicked out ,the article clearly state that she was kicked out by her own Olympic federation.
|
| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 8/7/2012 6:22:23 PM | | I thought we live in a democratic open world....Her opi nions should have no bearing on her position in th Greek Olympic Team at all.... | |
|
| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 8/8/2012 2:35:58 AM | "Each of the German victories, and there were a surprising number of these, made him happy, but he was highly annoyed by the series of triumphs by the marvelous colored American runner, Jesse Owens. People whose antecedents came from the jungle were primitive, Hitler said with a shrug; their physiques were stronger than those of civilized whites and hence should be excluded from future games." Albert Speer, Inside The Third Reich, P.73.
"With so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!" Voula Papachristou, Twitter.
Not a lot's changed then, eh?
The Holocaust started with a few racist comments. They might have even been called jokes, or thought funny by some. I don't think my mother found any of it funny.
"The term Holocaust comes from the Greek word hólos meaning “whole”, and kaustós meaning “burnt”...About six million Jews were killed by the Nazi regime...between five and 11 million members other minority groups were victims of Nazi genocide. These included Polish, blacks, homosexuals, Romani and other “gypsy” groups, people with disabilities, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Freemasons, criminals, political prisoners and Soviet civilians and prisoners of war." From http://www.world-war-2-diaries.com/holocaust-facts.html
Now that's harsh.
Not being able to play because you're stupid enough to say irresponsible things on twitter when you're representing your country and on a world stage, is a mere slap on the wrist.
Papachristou wasn't starved, beaten, experimented upon; she didn't have chemicals put in her eyes, or have a breast cut off without anaesthetic; she wasn't made to hold her infant child in such a way it would only take one bullet to murder both of them.
She may well have dug her own grave, though.

| Was this too harsh?... Posted: 8/8/2012 3:21:46 AM | I think it was harsh to ban her.
She is entitled to express her opinion. It doesn't mean she dislikes black peoples you know. Maybe she means she prefers Africans to stay in Africa and not come to live in Greece which has enough problems. I think I would be the same. In my country we do not have many black peoples, and if you ask me would I like to see them come to live in my country and bring different culture and mix with home population, then I have to say no. This is not meaning I am racist. If you ask me if I think is good idea if 100,000 English people go to live in Bolivia, I think is not good. I think most Bolivians would also not be liking this.
When this girl she say about West Nile disease, ok is little bit of a joke, she was trying to be funny and/or sarcastic. So what.
