| | can't get to POF anymore ! Page 1 of 1 | Just switched from AT&T to Cable One for my Internet and POF is gone !
With the help of Cable One and "centralops.net" we have been able to determen that after the signal leaves Cable One's network, it hits a server that returns an error. There is no indication as to what the error is, who the server is or how to contact them. "174.110.34.64.in-addr.arpa" is all it says.
Was not an issue with AT&T because the signal took a different path after leaving their network and did not encounter that troublesome server (acording to cable one).
Cable one has no way of directing the path after it leaves their network so how do I get to POF? Do signals not look for an alternitive path when encountering a problem?

. I am getting LOTS of site unavailable and timeouts etc.. and I have three providers I can login from where I am sitting

If so, one thing you can try is using a different DNS server than the one provided by Cable One.

Did try to enter the actual number address but it did not change the path.

Cool suggestion! I asked Cable One if there is a way of redirecting the path but they didn't know.
Unfortunately after entering googles servers in DNS settings, the path still did not change.
But I am on a mac, not sure if it even used them.
BTW, this is not a POF blocking thing because I can't get to google, amazon, washington post, etc…
Time to get tough with Cable One.

Typically, your router's internal routing table will point to your ISP's gateway/DNS server.
If your router allows you to add entries to it's internal routing table, add Googles DNS server address to it and remove Cable One's. I have a Linksys router and it allows me to add entries to it's router table. Check your router and see if you can do the same. Be sure to make a copy of all the entries in the table that you change just in case it doesn't work. lol
About changing the network route at Cable One, it can be done but it's beyond the scope of the level 1 CSR you spoke with. You need to talk to a level 2 tech support person. | |

Actually, the router is responsible for sending network packets from his home network to his ISP. His ISP is responsible for forwarding the packets to the next destination based on the routing tables in their servers. Since his ISP's routing tables are always sending his packets to a server that can't forward his packets, what I suggested sends the packets from his network to Googles network which has different routing tables and can possibly forward them using a different route. It's worth a shot. | |

Those numbers belong to Road Runner, a division of Time Warner. Your provider is responsible to solve your problem of not hooking up. There exists free tracing software ( path of packet). But I would just tell them to solve the problem. This has happened to me from time to time, not with POF, when Comcast was my provider. | |

Posted: 8/1/2012 1:23:22 PM | | hey mate, you sound like you no what your talking about! only joined pof last week and im not good with tech, drive a 12ton forklift all day but struggle with internet on my phone! lol. im having problems login in, i changed my username & password and submited new details & opened email to activate them but my old details keep coming up & if i try to delete them and put in my new details it just keeps bringing up my old ones! i tryed the help section on pof & sent an email askin why or if they could solve it for me & heard nothing back! please help me because its getting on my tits now, have been getting on well with nice girl & now struggling to even contact her DOH! thanks punkyboy | |

You could essentially edit that file and make say(example) facebook.com go to plentyoffish.com If it cannot resolve the DNS from this file it then goes to your router, THEN it goes to a public server. So, I would first try to edit the hosts file to the proper ip. Although since you tried manually typing in the ip address and it didnt work I doubt it would solve the issue. | |

The DNS is used to resolve hostnames to IP addresses. OP is not having a name resolution issue. He's having a routing issue.

I don't use the PoF Smartphone app so I can't help you. You should probably start your own thread so that someone who does can help. | |

Sorry to say it was not due to your suggestions, but I thank you for your help!
It was a popup from Cable One.
I had gotten a popup about my going over my limit and an extra gig was added automatically so I did not think anything about it.
They think their popups is what triggered an error from a server outside of their network.
They turned their popups off and now I get POF and everything else.
I now know more than I ever wanted to about the internet, LOL.
