| | Do young British women go to chuch?Page 1 of 2 (1, 2) | Hi
I've read a lot of advice saying to go to church to meet people. Having an almost non existent social life and no friends in my town left I was thinking of maybe giving it a go.
Perhaps in the USA this makes more sense to meet people in their 20's but I can't believe that the same is true for UK.
Has anyone got much experience of going to church in UK? From what I imagine it's mostly older people or recent immigrants to the country who tend to be more religious who attend churches.
Also, Do I just turn up at my nearest church? Do I just walk in and sit at the back?

Young women tend to have a very active social life without the need for religion and they'd only start attending church if enough of their friends did so to.

As a general rule-of-thumb CoE (Church of England aka Anglican), Methodist & Baptist churches don't have young congregations. There are exceptions of course!
Also bear in mind that Christians tend to be looking for other Christians but it you're happy to be going along to a church then I guess you're at least open to Christianity.

| Do young British women go to chuch? Posted: 7/28/2012 2:19:10 AM | The vast majority of churches in Britain today are almost empty. The only ones which seem to get a good attendence are some black churches like Kensington Temple in London and a few charasmitic churches, but they are few and far between and only tend to be in big cities.
The few mostly white Churches I do know of that do have large young congregations are Holy Trinity Brompton in Knightsbridge in London, Hillsong church in central London, St Helens church Bishopsgate in central London. There is also a big one I know of up in Stoke on Trent called Breathe City Church.

Religion was created to fill this gap. We need it no more. Having said that, a lot of people need some comfort knowing there is life after death, death is a scary thing that will happen to us all, and we will never know what to expect. I always ask do you remember what life was like before you were born? That is what death is like in my opinion. Sorry to be morbid lol.

But don't go to Church just to pick up women. In any case I don't think that many young British women do go to Church as a general rule, obviously it depends.

| Do young British women go to chuch? Posted: 7/28/2012 6:15:15 AM | Slight off subject it does sadden me how empty the churches of are younger people these days. I was brought up by fairly religious (but not remotely fanatical) parents and Sunday mornings were either Sunday school or junior church. I lost interest after the age of 16 although I have fond thoughts of the Church because it was important to my mum. It doesn't surprise me at all however that young people don't attend church. The same service each week read from a tatty book, the same pomp and ceremony and no deviation from the format (unless there was a christening which was really exciting)...pompous choirs, dull hymms and sermons which would not have been out of place in the 1700s! The C of E needs a great big kick into the 2000s I'm afraid if it's going to have any congregation left at all in 30 years. It's possible to be a really good Christian without attending church at all and it's possible to be a stalwart of the church and a complete arse of a person.
Get some fun back into worship and give the church a place back in the community I say! Could even have communion speed dating ... ok possibly a step too far....

The way society functions in 2012 is light years away from the rule of theological law, and the establishment can't seem to get to grips with the change in the way that humankind interacts and communicates in todays world. There is no real incentive for younger people to go or get involved in organised religion, of whatever flavour.

Its a close knit place but very much welcome any newcomers. Tea n biscuits and a chat afterwards. I would not go to church to meet a woman though, you have to go to want to be there, unless after meeting one you are willing to keep the pretence up.
'Do I just turn up at my nearest church? Do I just walk in and sit at the back?' No, you enter mid sermon, walking up the aisle, juggling candlesticks and singing Death to All But Metal.

It all depends on what part of the USA you are in! But if you just go to church for the sake of meeting someone, it will become apparent in no time to a true believer. Therefore, you will just end up wasting your time up another blind alley
Secondly, why would pple advise you to go and meet someone in a venue where few (if any) young women partake in? Just like most other major european organized religions, Anglicanism is a hollow/sterile faith; offering virtually no hope for spiritual growth/enlightenment,( which is counter intuitive to Biblical principles in the new testament) and which is likely the fundamental reason why most pple do NOT go.
If you are truly interested in a religious approach, then I suggest you pick up a Bible and try to understand (new testament)what its all about, before you run inside some church. You'll be surprised of the stark contrasts from Biblical doctrine to what you'll get in some organized religious organizations that have been politically tainted over hundreds of years!

Posted: 7/29/2012 1:33:37 AM | I agree with some of the other posters, you should not attend a church purely in order to meet a woman, unless you are prepared for some spiritual searching along the way. My experience of churches has been both Anglican and Pentecostal/charismatic. The Anglican churches were deadly dull, no one even admitted to ever reading the bible outside of the service, and seemed more concerned with who was on the coffee and flower arranging rota. The Pentecostal church had a better mix of ages and a very vibrant youth group. Their faith was genuine, and knowledge of the bible thorough, though sermons abit long averaging an hour at a time, but not boring. However it was very insular, few of them mixed with non-Christians, o atheists. Even other denominations and other faiths were suspect.I left in the end, and decided I didn't need a church to be spiritual. Whatever option you choose, just be aware of your motives, and the pros and cons involved.

Science has replaced religion, people have science to help them explain as accurately as possible how they came to be. Religion was created to fill this gap. I would like to see scientists explains these two events: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4TN2uxS7DA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7dpGWYZMDc By the way most people who attend churches are not hardcore believers or religious fanatics. But it is quite hard to find a busy church today as most are almost empty. Try searching "vibrant church" plus the town you live in into google and then check out the places which come up.

| Do young British women go to chuch? Posted: 7/30/2012 9:50:34 AM | Science, unlike religion, doesn't claim to be able to explain everything and claims nothing at all without logical evidential data. Religion on the other hand claims to know everything without a shred of evidence. The videos you've recommended have absolutely no evidence whatsoever for any 'divine' intervention. | |

The videos you've recommended have absolutely no evidence whatsoever for any 'divine' intervention. Yes they do as celebral palsy is uncurable. No doctor or scientist has ever come up with a cure for it. Furthermore making a cure happen on demand ie when that woman went to a church to be healed is even more evidence of supernatural involvement. If she had slowly recovered over a long period then a scientific explanation would be plausable but to recover almost immediatly on demand defies science. In the other video the guy was not a christian, he just recalled what he had experienced. It is not scientifically possible for a man to appear to someone, tell them something that only they would know and then disappear into thin air. Either the guy was halucinating or that event actually happened. Given that the guy in question was not prone to halucinating it is more than likely what he described actually happened.

Most atheists pride themselves on refuting anything that isn't backed up by proof or evidence; yet when they are presented with said evidence or physical demonstrations, they stubbornly continue to deny it even on irrational grounds! They won't even bother to fully investigate it objectively fearing that they might have to accept it! This is the hallmark of all Atheists, no matter how much evidence you show them, its never enough.

Just because *you* regard something as evidence does not make it so, the strongest arguments for God are riddled with logical fallacies. Even William Lane Craig the Christian apologist who is part responsible for the most robust (or at least most popular) argument for God rejects his own arguments and falls back on faith.
In any case, it is fun to debate.

church is full of the brides of christ!! poor dimwitted ninnies - who else but a religious bore continues to believe what their parent told them after the age of 10

Oh yeah, so I guess that all of the world class medical professionals and physiotherapists within the Mayo clinic (one of the formidable healthcare institutions in the world) were all a bunch of incompetent clowns who couldn't make a diagnosis of cerebral palsey with all the imaging technology they have on hand. The fact that this young woman who since birth was physically invalid; managed to suddenly become fully mobile in a matter of minutes before a congregation does not (in your view) qualify as evidence!
This PROVES my point even more; that no matter how much substance you unfold before an Atheist; it will NEVER be enough. He will always re-draw the chalk line further and further away!
the strongest arguments for God are riddled with logical fallacies.
Try telling this woman who was suddenly "cured" of her permanent affliction after so many years; that the entity that interceded in her full recovery is the result of a "logical fallacy". With divine intervention, anything can be accomplished as it transcends all "logic" that exists in (and imprisons) the puny human mind.
Even William Lane Craig the Christian apologist who is part responsible for the most robust (or at least most popular) argument for God rejects his own arguments and falls back on faith.
Surely you must have heard of Antony Flew (a fellow country man of yours) and re-known (ex) Atheist, who was sort of regarded as the high authority of Atheism by many. A man who was a staunch Atheist; that is, until he suddenly saw the proverbial light of intelligent design/architecture all around and could no longer deny it! No, he was not a beneficiary of any miracles; nor does he ascribe to any particular faith. But what he eventually realized is that existence cannot be of its own! This is why I have respect for this man; because at least he didn't bury his head in the sand when he saw the "truth"!
@Fred

Good of you to share your 'experiences'; now you must tell us how you (a man I presume) got into a women's prison. Hope it didn't leave a "bad taste" in your mouth (seeing that you are on a dating site); but I heard that if you gargle with holy water, it will get the nasties out right away!
church is full of the brides of christ!! poor dimwitted ninnies
I always find it fascinating when an Atheist inadvertently exposes their true nature.

I have no idea what you are talking about. You are referencing conversations we never had. You can't declare me dishonest for rejecting evidence you never presented. If there was a genuine action of miracle healing in the way you describe where is the evidence? The press conference? The mass conversion amongst the medical professionals of the mayo clinic. People do recover from all manner of conditions, where are the amputees who regrow limbs?

Again I don't know who this woman was, but I know of no situation in which fraud can not be ruled out. You have not even given me her name, but if you did I am sure the story would start to unravel. You have a greater vested interested in challenging the story than me however, but you want to believe so you probably don't care about the truth.
For instance, there was an indian guru who had not eaten for a year. People would visit him. to bask in his holiness as he meditated under a tree. They could all see him... sitting, not eating. Or except when he went to bed of course, they could not see him there. Gee what is more likely... he hadn't eaten for a year... or he was eating at night away from the gullible people?

You are presuming that an atheist can not also be someone who follows the truth. I am not an atheist because I like it, or I think it's trendy. I am atheist because I have not been convinced. However he converted to deism, you are clearly not a deist but a theist. I think deists occupy a nice middle ground so are effectively claimed by both groups!

I presumed that you at least took a few minutes to review the video clip; you should do that much so you can know what the subject matter is about!
If there was a genuine action of miracle healing in the way you describe where is the evidence?
What type of evidence would you be looking for? If an individual has been shown to be crippled since birth and was attested by multiple medical professionals(in multiple institutions) as having an incurable disease over many years; then all of a sudden she begins to walk about normally; what else would you require? Are you insinuating that she (as well as all other medical professionals involved) were faking this (even as an infant/toddler?)up until her teens!
The press conference?
Why would you expect a press conference to be held? And by whom? It is NOT the job of medical professionals to decide whether or not a miracle took place, as they practice empirical medicine! When she arrived back fully intact they simply closed her case. Did Jesus hold a "press conference" everytime he performed a miracle?
The mass conversion amongst the medical professionals of the mayo clinic.
The same reasons there weren't mass conversions whenever Jesus performed miracles (such as raising the dead); the scientific community does not venture to explain something that is well beyond their scope of understanding. It is up to each individual to decide for themselves based upon examining of that which was unfolded!
where are the amputees who regrow limbs?
Just because no one has held a press conference on this doesn't mean it hasn't happened!
Again I don't know who this woman was, but I know of no situation in which fraud can not be ruled out.
Then this is good opportunity for you to look into it further; this woman's experience is now public information and I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to contact her or her past care-givers/documentation. This is your chance to see if you have enough courage to uphold what you feel to be the truth.
This story bears no comparison with the one above; but I personally would welcome any attempts by you or other atheists to legitimately discredit her story!
You are presuming that an atheist can not also be someone who follows the truth.
then what is preventing you (and many other Atheists) from pursuing that which might hold some truth? Flew had the courage to challenge his belief (or lack of belief) system, and didn't shy away from what he discovered for himself!
|
| Do young British women go to chuch? Posted: 8/1/2012 8:23:56 AM | Okay so I watched part of the video, of course that is just the story. For the evidence you need to show medical records and sworn testimony. It is not the job of atheists to prove this never occurred, but the job of people like yourself to demonstrate that it did, and that supernatural intervention is more plausible than fraud, nature or medical science. The ball is in your court, until you prove it we have to assume this is just one of many modern fairy tales.
Oh and I constantly challenge my beliefs of lack thereof. It's not about being shy, it's about being led by logic, evidence and the facts.
