| | Olympics Opening CeremonyPage 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | With all the bad press in the lead up to the Olympics I wasn't sure what to expect, especially with the vast amounts of money that have been spent to date.
Got to admit I was non-plussed by the history lesson although I did like the chimneys. Some aspects were interesting but the only aspect that had the wow factor for me was the flame composed of petals.
Overall I came away feeling underwhelmed. If you watched the ceremony what was your overall feeling?

| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/27/2012 5:52:23 PM | i watched it... start to finish...
it was.. interesting.. a bit chaotic for my taste but you have to appreciate the work that went into it..

| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/27/2012 5:54:18 PM | I liked it until all the flag waving by people in track suits ................. don't they have fashion designers?

| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/27/2012 6:01:19 PM | | It was all about hype and too much money wasted. All I heard was Danny Boyle every minute. Wasn't overwhelmed but never less enjoyed the way they present all the British history. Best part for me was seen Mohammed Ali holding Olympic flag, Seen few more Muslim countries flags been carried by women 1st time ever, also 1st time ever every country has a women athletics in their team YAY, very proud and last but not least seen my friend son with rope act whatever that meant to be haha, I know how harder all those kids and everyone who was involved worked. Congratulations to everyone who was involved. | |

| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/27/2012 8:30:07 PM | | They were trying to put on something spectacular and for the most part succeeded.I enjoyed it very much,it had a little of everything, history, humour ,talent and a very broad array of British citizens. The children singing from the four countries was a very nice touch. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/27/2012 11:20:44 PM | hearing some countries saying its to BRITISH erm its meant to be

| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 12:28:36 AM | It must have been fantastic to be in the stadium and I loved watching most of it. I didn't like the bit where the kids were doing the silly facebook /texting malarkey and far too much 'new music' for my taste. I hated the bit with the Queen and Bond, I thought it was a bit tacky. I loved the drummers and all of volunteers that put so much into it. They did a great job. So on the whole, I think we can hold our heads up. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 12:31:59 AM | According to the BBC news Ticker, 9Billion people were expected to be watching world-wide, so it only cost UK Plc a 9.00 a head subsidy for this latest instalment of bread & circuses - I'd like to be able to afford cake - have you been shopping lately?
Before I get jumped on as a killjoy, I think it's good that we're doing this. I'm just heartily sick and tired of the endless succession of politicians (from all parties) who persist in throwing OUR money up the wall, whilst strutting around on the International Stage, in the deluded belief that most of the World map is still coloured red.
And yes, Chuzz - the volunteers were truly amazing and deserve all credit for an amazing effort.

| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 12:45:39 AM | Thought it was going to be better than some of the Olympic Ceremonies of the past but was left a little disappointed. The NHS section was good at least we could see where all the NHS beds ,Doctors and Nurses had gone and it was nice of Danny Boyle to show David Cameron as the big monster destroying the NHS,oh wait that was suppose to be Harry Potters Voldermort. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 12:51:28 AM | I'd love to have been there to witness the whole event properly live - it looked fantastic on the telly but I bet it was much better in reality.
My favourite bit was when the NHS staff were dancing to some jazzy type tunes, they looked like they were really enjoying themselves and were totally giving it their all - it was quite joyous to watch
And the trek down memory lane musically was fab...all in all the whole event served to remind us or me anyway, what British people have given to the world throughout the years.
I dozed off midway through the parading of the Olympian athletes from their different countries and woke up at the end of Paul McCartney getting everybody in the arena to sing Hey Jude
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 1:24:13 AM | It was great. I truly respect and admire people who can put on something like that on such a grand scale and get it right .It was like one big beautiful musical .Well done Danny and all involved .I love the part where the music through the ages from fifties to Dizzy .A very London show ..The cauldron lighting was awe inspiring. I have watched the Olympics since Seoul and only Beijing had a better one and Beijing had Spielberg and lots of fake. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 2:16:42 AM | By the way one hundred anti-olympic protesters were arrested during the opening ceremony see this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-19023104 And today there is a large anti-Olmypic protest in Mile End about two miles from the Olympic Park it will be interesting to see how that demonstration is treated. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 2:22:34 AM | | My personal analysis of the Opening Ceremony is the industrial revolution scene was good, especially when the Olympic rings rose in the air from the ground, the scene where the Queen appeared to parachute out of the helicopter was good, but it could have been made better by matching the computer generated day light when she is in the helicopter with Bond with the darker live scene, they have known for a while what time the opening ceremony was going to happen, it all could have been a bit more realistic, because of timing, it was obvious the Queen wasn't on the parachute, even though we wouldn't expect it to be really her, it could have been done better. The best part was the lighting of the cauldron, it was great. The rest was rubbish, the strangled cat of Paul McCartney is way past his best, he should retire. I would give the whole thing around 5/10 against 8/10 for Beijing. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 2:31:37 AM | London must be buzzing with all the paid and free Olympic events.
Would love to be down there just to soak up the atmosphere and by the looks of the stadium it's unlikely to be an embarrassment post-Olympics that the Millenium Dome turned into before being transformed into the O2.
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 2:36:27 AM | | They said the Olympics cost us £9 billion, so lets say the working population of this country is around 25 million (Some say 18 million some say 30 million), that means we paid roughly £360 each for it, that's if the £9 billion was solely from the tax payer, am not too sure. It's a lot of money though, I could have thought of better ways to spend my £360, like helping NHS cuts and other important things that have suffered from cuts that we need. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 2:51:16 AM | ^^^ Don't worry you will not be paying £360. Most of the money comes from sponsorship. By the end of the games we would have made more than we spent on it.
Why do people have to pooh- pooh everything that goes on in this country? Let's just all spend money on things that we need. Let's not try and celebrate anything. Let's not enjoy sport, music, art or anything else that makes us human.
Even better then Kieran, let them pay and let us enjoy.lol
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 3:10:45 AM | | Chuzz16 I am British, by nature I am not supposed to enjoy anything or celebrate lol. It would have been better if the British had more say in it and it was sponsored by British companies instead it all being American. Nothing is ever truly British anymore, we are America's poodle and I absolutely hate that. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 3:59:36 AM | By the way one hundred anti-olympic protesters were arrested during the opening ceremony
Quite pathetic, and what is the point of protesting now, more so by people who should know better... its done, its happening and nothing can stop it now, they should get over it and move on.
Its the what is going to happen afterwards that worries me, when all this feel good factor over the Olympics is finished and there is nothing left to look forward to ...
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 4:10:34 AM | Even if the money did come from sponsorship, 9 billion is such lot, especially when people cannot get cancer treatments in areas that they live, and our care system for the elderly could be so much better etc...
I know we have to have pleasure and enjoyment too in our lives, but sometimes simple things in life can be just as good.. Ultimately the opening of the games seems to me about nationalistic showing off, and I for one would have had greater respect if we d put on a good much smaller show to convey our national pride and welcome other competing countries as the host, and then made the point that on this budget this then enabled us to do all these things with the money saved - you could have relayed that information through lots of creative mediums, but what a caring moral statement to make to the world.... And I would hope it would set the tone for other future Olympic opening ceremonies too.
I was impressed by the four childrens choirs singing from the four countries in the Union, and I thought the passing on of the final torch lighting to nominated future sportsmans was a great idea, and the olympic flame was a brilliant breathtaking design , I also loved the the doves on bicycles, amazing the birds you get in the UK, on lots of levels ;-)))
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 4:17:50 AM | | I agree with what Chuzz16 have just said. Londoners will earn more than they have spent. | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 5:26:05 AM | watched most of it in the pub and most of the reaction at the start was wtf!! and asked if you get a free l.s.d tablet with your ticket lol interesting what was tweeted as well
Conservative MP Aidan Burley: "The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?"
And: "Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multi-cultural crap. Bring back red arrows, Shakespeare and the Stones!"
do agree with some of what he said as again most in the pub thought it was to p.c and should of kept politics out of it, plus could not highlight a few of the mistakes .... playing u2 tracks, sure they are from the republic of ireland? and how sad was it some of the music choices especially paul mac at the end. should of been the stones with start me up or the kinks waterloo sunset
edit vvv as far as im aware the republic of ireland is not part of great britain and indeed have there own olympic squad.
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 5:29:09 AM | post 22 why you complain of u2 getting played there is a nation called the republic of Ireland there | |
|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 5:37:46 AM | I got the feeling that it all tried far too hard to be inclusive, and in so doing shot itself in all of its several feet. As for Macca -= he seems to be a permanent fixture at these sort of gigs - I agree the Stones 'Start Me Up' would have been pretty good, but they don't have the mid-market cr*p appeal of The Beatles. The whole opening fanfare could have been done inside twenty minutes, I'm totally with Pandora on this.

|
| Olympics Opening Ceremony Posted: 7/28/2012 5:45:30 AM | Anyone who was able to do such a massive project in one of the most expensive cities on earth for £9billion is a true genius . To say sponsorship money for the 'Olympics' should be spent on healthcare is just a very stupid suggestion .
I don't think it any surprise that a person who was celebrating senior Nazis at a party recently ,would tweet something like that.
A few decades ago a very talented artiste name Bob Dylan did a song called ''The times they are changin '' it seems it changed too fast for some and they are left holding on to something that is no more..
