| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 2:05:40 PM | When I was fishing in this pond several things jumped out at me. The more I saw them the more it annoyed me. No, I’m not perfect, and yes I make a mistake now and then, too.
Sometimes I wonder if all the spelling mistakes, punctuation, and grammar errors are a result of the IM shorthand that has developed over the Internet years, then I think, but all these people went to school—right? Japhus and I were talking the other day and if there is one thing that is a mutual pet peeve for us both it is reading posts filled with errors. It’s like reading cryptic alien dialogue, and a lot of profiles read the same way.
I’m a true believer in putting your best foot forward. If you’re trying to impress someone why do it without using spell check if your spelling sucks? I know I’ll skip reading posts simply because reading them gives me a headache.
Do you find yourself deleting messages from someone who can’t spell? Does reading a profile filled with these errors cause you not to say hello? When you get an email from someone who really spells badly, what’s your first thought about this person? What is your take on posts that you need a separate dictionary to figure out? Why do people do this?
The other pet peeve we share are threads that say, “Why do ALL……” It seems awfully rude to lump ALL people in one category. Surely their must be some exceptions?

Looks like ya landed one too..
OT: You're and Your misuse bugs me. calling a simile a metaphor bugs me. using U and 2 for you and to, two, too. professing uncredentialed wisdom and knowledge in professional fields bugs me. Hell, MOST of what's posted bugs me..

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 2:18:23 PM | | Thank you. Few things turn me off quicker than cyber-shorthand. If you don't feel like taking the time and putting forth the effort to spell out an entire word, then I've got better things to do with my time. | |

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 2:24:20 PM | The thing that got us was it isn't rare, it's really common. You can't open a thread of - 3 or more pages - and not be confronted with this issue. I only have a grade eight education, but I'm a published author! If I can learn to try my best, why don't others? Is it just lack of caring? Lack of ability? Lack of wanting others to think of you of having something valid to say? Or is it simply becoming lazy and since shorthand is acceptable in IM conversations why not bring it here?
But it's not just that. It's finding whole posts that read something like this:
"I wuz up taht way da other dya and fought it was beutiful"
Ok, either you are horribily drunk, stoned, or a combination thereof!

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 2:33:08 PM | Yea, it kinda drives me nuts to. Especially when they use 2 for to. I mean come on, it's a two letter word.
Another one I have to laugh about is when someone uses gurl instead of girl and if it's a girl who writes gurl it's even more funny. I guess the girl doesn't realize that "gurl" is what the gay guys call a fem gay guy.

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 3:17:05 PM | its mainly the spelling that gets me. i might not spell everything perfectly all the time, but mostly im good.
i almost passed up the profile of a great guy cuz he spelled his profession as "electritian" and, as you may know...its "electrician"...i was thinking, "who cant even spell their job title?"...of course, he was cute and everything else on his profile was spelled correctly...

However, everyone does make mistakes, and no one is perfect by far. I would like- to add one note here too, or at least in respect to the people that have there own way of self expression. Everyone writes different, and displays their writing differently. Some people post with there own signature style. Like me for instance, and how I end the majority of my post with -----------> ;)

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 3:33:32 PM | lol cuz? im? i? lol Killing myself laughing here. Even that drives us nuts! lmao
There are some things like lol or FYI one can get away with and not look lazy. But not even bothering to capitalize the beginning of a sentence?
Perhaps we are picky people, which possibly makes us perfect for each other... but what's up with all the threads LUMPING ALL MEN, or ALL WOMEN together like pigs at a trough?
"Are ALL men pigs?" "Why are ALL bbw's left out?" "ALL men are liars!"
Not all of any group are ALL of anything. There is always some exceptions to those statements.

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 3:48:03 PM | That's ok, Jamie and I correct each other's spelling all the time as a joke lol.
I wasn't picking on you... but I must say it does bug me. I just read a guys post in another thread, he used a period but no space before the next word! duh

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 3:51:44 PM | | Don't you think a person who isn't willing to communicate correctly must be lazy or really messy in other parts of their lives? That has always crossed my mind, which is why I wouldn't answer an ad that read, " I lke wonem. Tehy are great! I am a jornalist and wirte for a living..." Good god! For who? Space Cadets Gazzette? | |

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 3:54:58 PM | Hey check out my typo up above, lol, Mispelled threads. I know Im always misspelling something......or a whole lot of things. OT: I like to at least try and not misspell. If I make a mistake I like to try to corect it. While I may not be verry good at modern english writing. I believe that everyone can benefit from learning it. Or well... It means alot to me, to work on it ;) | |

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 3:56:12 PM | | last guy who said he was in collage, i asked him which magazines he used....reminding you that it was typed, not spoken...he was so confused...it took me about 15 min to explain it, and then i never talked to him again...my choice, not his...if you make it to college or university, you should know how to spell it (its in almost every name--ITT Tech-College of Criminal Justice, University of Missouri-St Louis-College of Optometry) | |

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 4:01:14 PM | I find there are certain words, that, being one of them where my fingers seem to constantly trip and cause an error. I usually catch those though.
The question though is would you contact someone who spoke in typing jibberish, and why not if you won't?

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 4:09:46 PM | Easy fix....open up MS Word and type and spell check there...cut & paste. Takes a second to do.
As far as Im shorthand, Saves time for all the 2 finger typist
Pet peeve for me - Is how the sexes became so defensive towards one another. Some threads I read its like Battle of the Sexes...lmsao

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 4:24:55 PM | We also agree with the above poster who mentioned the bashing threads. In our opinion those should be erased by mods, but then half the site would disappear. lol
Almost every post I make is written in word first then copied and pasted here. Why? I only have grade eight, and a partial grade nine. Despite entering college at 39 and taking web design and electronic publishing my spelling still sucks most days. I hear writters who write for a living have this trait in common, or most of them do. I think I've done rather well despite my lack of formal education.
The whole point of this thread though was to ask if incorrect spelling, grammar, and lack of punctuation and such stops you from saying hi to someone. After all, this is a place to meet and date, is it not? That's why most of us came here, I think.
I did. Jamie did. | |

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 4:29:41 PM | | I was an English major so sometimes it bothers me but then the owner of my company is highly educated, brilliant in his career, and can barely spell his name. I don't really judge people by their spelling or grammar but u and r and i c turn me off if you're over 20. | |

| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 8/2/2005 4:44:49 PM | I've been fish'n in the pond too you know Especially when I can't sleep at night Right now there's no place I'd rather go I'd not change a thing about this site
I love everything about it, yes I do Some POFer's think they know it all Been accused of it myself, yeah me too However, by who I can't recall
Some of us are lonely, some of us are scared But most of us are just here to have fun Several had laundry that needed to be bared And a few of us don't like to be outdone
In any case, I say give me all the flaws All the mispelled words and bad grammar Yeah, I think we all have a good cause We don't all claim to have poise and glamour
I've laughed til I cried at some of the posts Some spell perfectly til Saturday nights But I guess we all have our ghosts Who are any of us to say what's right
But it's the banter and sarcasm I must say That's the most fun I have in this arena And to all who've indulged me, I send a bouquet Of fragrant Dessert Sand Verbena
