| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/8/2005 12:17:41 AM | well from personally experience whenever a genre of music totally takes over the top-ten it becomes over saturated and over
Is HIP HOP going to go away soon?
thoughts? | |

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/8/2005 1:50:14 AM | | nope hip hop lives. it has reached the point where it will never die. i wonder if this is what all those old schoolers used to ask about rock. forms of hip hop such as gangsta rap and crunk muzik can die, but not the genre itself. remember hair metal dissapeared then grunge left, now rap-metal or nu-metal is gone. they are all forms of rock. so i think hip-hop is here to stay. its been around for 20 years. it pretty much solidified its place when Run DMC collaborated with aerosmith. | |

It is just a matter of time bro .......really, I feel it, you know?
It is kinda like when someone just keeps telling the same story over and over again you start to realize oh.....that is all you got ....just a matter of time
the reason guitar music or rock keeps coming back is there is a world of substance there !!!! ie -eric clapton can comeback and do a whole album of robert johnson blues songs from the 30's and it is cool -14 year old kids learn 25 year old rock tunes cause they still have substance or staying power
hip hop /rap??????
-when was the last time you saw a tone loc tribute band or run dmc tribute band......etc?????
You don't .....you know why? because it is a novelty
kinda like a piece of candy ....... ment to be enjoyed in the moment then it is over
kinda like disco......
heard much from -ll cool j -coolio -puffy .....etc lately?
no...... because they are selling clothes or making movies because even they know being a hip hop artists is not a long term career and it is hard to take a "rap artist/musician " seriously when they spend more time selling t-shirts and rims..........
think about.........
"hello my name is BB KING you should buy my dope rims for your car.... they are real shiney and spin so you can attract the attention of all the fly cuties at de club when you are out pimped .....know what i am sayin"
BB king........etc does not have to stoop to that cause they have a legitimate career

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/8/2005 6:39:05 PM | I can appreciate the musical talent involved in most music. Even genres I dont care for. But hip hop is different in the sense there are no live musicians involved with many (not all) of these so called "artists". Even in live performances if there is a band behind the "pop star", the instruments are not mic'd, vocal mics are muted when the songs start ***cough, brittney, cough, lip sync, cough, cough*** (This one I know for fact, 11 years as a live sound engineer, Ive seen it all). And for that matter even more dont even write their own songs. Im not saying all use outside writers, but many do. I can at least still appreciate the talent with those who write their own music. I have no resepct for those who just rely on whatever their managers tell them to do, what to sing, how to dress, what to say. Whatever is going to make them look good and bring in the most money this week.
If you take the human element out of music, what are you left with??? Computer generated noise.

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/8/2005 7:27:04 PM | no.. YOU should go away, quit listen to top 10 of anything and making vague assesments....
besides that Hip Hop & Disco is sooo relevant in some of the newest forms of music.. look at some great artists like DAFT PUNK, KNIFEHANDCHOP, FELIX DA HOUSECAT.... you can't kill a genre ... nothing is so black & white in the world to have music good or bad by a simple button or a battery....
i really can't belive some of the "im in a boat, why can i swim ?" statements made here

Nah.. you're out of it. People like you were saying that 10 years ago.
Obviously you're still listening to the tired old radio. Now there's something that irrelevant to anyone who truly cares about music.

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/8/2005 8:01:58 PM | Hip-Hop has been around for awhile. It has grown over the years and some of it is pretty catchy. I'm not a big fan of it, but you can catch me dancing to a song or two at a club, working out to it, etc. Some of it is good, though some gets repetitive...then again what isn't? Look at all the genres over the years...nowadays it's hard to be original in anything because someone somewhere has already been there, done it, and bought the t-shirt.
I will choose Mozart or Bach over Ja Rule and Beyonce any day (lol okay so sue me if they're not hip hop) but I'm not about to cut down this music and call it rubbish because the amount of fans and young (and old...my mom listens to it occasionally. lol), which we're talking is a lot...can't be wrong. Who is anyone to judge what should or shouldn't be considered good music?

You are right when you say " who am I to say what is good or bad music" I am just a peasant you know......
but these forums are here to state ideas you are allowed to have your own opinions
being a musician I have a hard time with the whole rap thing as a "music genre"
yes it will still be around..... but I think that says more about the tastes of society..... than the actual legitimacy of rap as a form of music
ie WWF smackdown(wrestling) was also very popular at one point........ but that is more an example of our society today and it's extreme low standards, when it comes to art and entertainment

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/9/2005 2:37:19 AM | hip hop is not going anywhere. besides not all hip hop artists are talking about their rims, hoes and bling, check out some groups that address real issues ....A Tribe Called Quest, J5, Hieroglyphics, Dilated Peoples...etc.
btw, i mainly listen to punk...so i'm not defending what i love, puffy, eniemen and jarule can vanish for all i care, but they're not going to.

Yea thats not really hip hop, thats gangster rap, which should be called crap but anyway. Its all repetitive mainstream garbage. Everyone copies the next big artist, tell me how there is any variation in music between all these mainstream artists. People who call themselves punk artists are not punk, people who call themselves rappers are not rappers. People who have talent can call themselves whatever genre they want. Whining losers who sing songs like I Miss You are not punk artists, thats called poser punk or emo in the world that I come from. Real rappers have style and skill like Tupac and actually create music that is different instead of being all the same, not this 50 Cent moron who claims he got shot 9 times, bet all the wounds are fake. I hate to sound ignorant but thats the way it is.

To add to that... Jurassic 5, The Roots, Saul Williams, Dr. Doom/Octagon, Cex, Dizzy Rascal, Arrested Developement, Public Enemy... just to name a couple more.
If Puff Daddy is a good enough example of what Rap is. Then I think Simple Plan is a good enough example of punk, Default is a good enough example of rock, and Korn is a good enough example of metal. Well those bands all seem to suck so I guess those genres suck too... guess I'm sticking to abstract electronic.
I mean at least I took the time to listen to the radio....

Yah I used to think the same thing about Rap until I realized that the genre actually existed under the surface... much like Punk existed under the surface and electronic music existed under the surface. The people who are out there making good music are not spending their money getting their music on the radio (yes you have to pay to get music on the radio) or making videos. They make music... much like the rest of the indie world.

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/9/2005 10:35:26 PM | My son loves the hip hop stuff. Personally it can't go away fast enough for me!!
The beats are great and sometimes you can even understand the lyrics!! LOL
I think I wouldn't mind it soooo much if it wasn't so angry ALL the time and all the swearing drives me nuts.
I haven't banned it from my house but I have told my son that if I hear it, it's gone.
just my 2 cents worth | |

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 8/10/2005 12:39:00 AM | Never thought I'd say it, but trvlingman has a point. The good stuff is artistic expression in an interesting genre The bad (most of it) is about as lasting and meaningful as a sales jingle But hasn't commercial music always been that way? | |
