Prison Penpals LOCKED for REVIEW

If someone has a friend in Prison do you condemn them for writing to them??

I have a sis in jail down in Ohio-her own fault-but she sure goes stir crazy without outside contact...

and I have a long time friend who is a off and on penpal-I don't see the crime in it.

People do get lonely don't they/?

someone once said to me-OMG how can you write to someone that has broken the law/?

My boyfriend was in prison for a year not long ago...Why would you stop caring about someone just because they got caught for doing what most of the human race tries to get away with?

Never considered that thought on both accounts..

It would suggest tunnel vision in those set in their ways of"I never would"

things happen for a reason under the sun and moon and stars-and by fate.I take that back by karma..

Driven to crime in any aspect-one should consider the reaction that caused the crime not just the action of the crime.

I wrote to Charles Manson a few years back when I was writing a paper about him and his followers. Very intelligent guy, always on the ball with his answers.

People in prison are just the ones who got caught, or framed, or a bad jury. Go ahead and write, but it might be good to check on something about info as to their history. If you already know them, sure they need support. I see nothing wrong with it.

my best friend,G-d rest his soul, was a felon.......he was also one of the most genuine, honest, caring, and brilliant individuals this world has ever known...Good people do bad things...some get caught some dont .......some'll go to prison some wont......you had relationships with these folks prior to their convictions, you are being a good friend/family member.....

My next relationship with a woman is going to be as prison pen pals. It gives her something to do, and will provide me with an acceptable reason why we don't have sex.

There is one site that sells adresses to prison babes and I thought of writing to a couple but how does one break the ice? One never knows what one is getting into when they take this route.

Pen pals are wonderful outlets for inmates. My best friend in college went to work in a maximum security prison straight out of school. She was a rehabilitation counselor and she strongly supported the inmates keeping in touch with friends and family members who had those willing to communicate with them. It was a way for the prisoners to keep up on family and friends' lives and to share in some of the ups and downs of their own experiences. It gave them something to look forward to when mail came in. She said she found it easier sometimes to work with those who had a supportive family because in many cases it gave them something to work for, something to hold onto. I know that when she left there, she kept in touch with a couple of the inmates she had worked with, just as friends.

When I was younger I put a ad in this magazine for penpals and I didnt know that I would be getting mail from men that was in prison.I dont think its the idea about writing them so much. Its the idea of thinking about what you are you are getting yourself into.when they get out of prison what if they want to meet you and start a relationship, you know those are some things to think about, also it would depend on the type of crime that they committed. But as for me I dont think I would do that again, because you never know if your penpal is a murderer or a rapist, those type of people I would not want to contact at all or child molesters or serial killers.it would be different if they were there for minor things maybe.but like I said you have to consider those things first before you decide to write to them.I didnt continue writing any of them.I dont even think I even wrote some of them back.I might have sent two letters and thats it.one was in jail for assault and battery.Idont know whatever happen with him.I didnt know that I was going to be accepting mail from prisoneers.

Good people do bad things, and bad people do good things. People are entitled to make their own mistakes, and if they "pay the penance" I think that it is in the past. There is not any point in looking back...forwards you go, with the lesson you have learned.

Good for you for writing, shows amazing character and heart!

I never stood up for my kids when they broke the law but my son has been serving six (so far) of his eight year sentence for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I would wish someone would be his pen pal. And just because someone has made some mistakes in their life doesn't make them any less human. I'm glad she is caring enough and that she can see past her own face to take the time for someone in prison. Now for you shallow, goody goody friend, she needs a good **** slap to reality So if someone has a friend in prison, how can you condem them for being a FRIEND?

Prisoners are no less people than anyone else and it frankly makes me very angry how their rights and humanity are stripped for doing things that we have all thought of doing, and some of us have done.

Criminals tend to commit crimes again. I just don't see why a normal woman would want to write to them, when there are plenty of good men out there.

Several years ago, I lost contact with a long-time friend of mine. I then found out he was in jail, but he initially lied to me about the crime he had committed. I did some investigating and found out he was really in for something else -- a sex crime which I found morally reprehensible. He continued to deny the charges to me -- this even after he had plea-bargained it down to something lesser. He was eventually sent to prison for a few years. Because of our prior friendship, I tried to support him while he was there, wrote to him, sent packages and even visited him once. However, after he was released, I terminated our friendship. The crime he had committed was something that I just could not accept.

No way would I write to someone in prison. They are there for a reason....

I find it odd that people think its ok to do this (I guess I can understand if they are family, but a total stranger?)

So he's lonely, so what?? I am sure the person he murdered (or that person's family), or the woman he raped have some issues too! Is anyone writing to them?
