| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 8:20:25 PM | I know it sounds crazy, and not sure if it's considered "narcotic," but I recently had a night where I just could NOT sleep no matter what. I followed my Gram's age-old remedy of sipping on a can of beer. Finished about half the can and felt completely wiped.
Other than that... I have NO idea. The problem deifnitely sucks.

| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 8:28:55 PM | no tryptophans...your brain will revolt the next day. If you wake up before it goes through your system, you'll most certainly regret it.
Warm milk, 2 bananas, and some valerian root. No caffeine after 4:PM No eating less than 4 hours before sleeping. (except the bananas) Relax, no loud music or arguing before sleep time. As a chronic insomniac (Used to only sleep 4 hours a night with medical aid) these are a few things I suggest. I now sleep 6 hours a night, most of the time. More importantly, I can fall asleep when I want. (I still wake up too early)

Get a few CD's of ocean or rain sounds, with light music in the background.
Keep a supply of Chamomile tea on hand, brew to just over warm, add honey and a dash of milk.
Don't eat solid food within 4 hours of bedtime.
Good luck! | |

| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 9:01:32 PM | | Try some niacinamide. Not straight niacin. You can't get niacinamide otc, but you don't need an rx. You can get it from the pharmacist for very, very cheap. Wal Mart pharmacy has it. Either 100 or 500 mg tabs. 500 was too much for me to take at one time, but it may not be for you. It produces a natural relaxation and has no side effects such as grogginess in the morning that you would get from diphenhydramine and like medications. Do some research on it to see if it would suit you. | |

| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 9:03:51 PM | | There's the same amount of niacin in two bananas as one 100mg pill. Fewer side affects eating bananas, as well. | |
|
| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 9:14:29 PM | | You can't get the same effect eating bananas as taking niacinamide...at least I never had. Side effects of niacinamide are almost nil. | |
|
| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 9:15:04 PM | On the other hand, the sugar (albeit natural) in bananas is likely to provide you with a small energy boost that you could probably do without as you're trying to unwind.
Speaking of unwinding, reading before bed is another natural relaxant, too.
|
| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 9:16:06 PM | | P.S. Since typical dosage is 3 500-mg pills a day, you would have to literally eat a whole "bunch" of bananas -- and more -- to get that much niacin. Again, I'm also not talking straight niacin. That's an important difference. You take that much niacin you're gonna be in trouble. | |

OT: The bananas work. paired up with the milk and valerian root, you sleep good.
Regardless of what the pills do...I've done the pill thing, and find it way to easy to rely on them. The non-med method is something I've been doing for a while, and it works.

go to a health food store, get some lavendar essential oil. Drop two or three drops on a cotton make up remover type pad, and put it in your pillow case. Lavendar naturally calms. It works.
(try not to get the oil on your skin too much, wash your hands if you do, because it's an irritant if you rub it in your eyes or nose or mouth)
|
| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 9:41:51 PM | you could try chamomile tea---as you see I'm up now forgot to take an s-aide.

| sleep assistance.. Posted: 8/15/2005 9:45:22 PM | lavender is good for women to sleep...but for men, it's a mild aphrodesiac. I tried it before, and found out the uh...hard way. it might work on you if you're a guy with low testosterone, though. (Of course, what guy will ever admit that.) | |

A great sleep aid believe it or not is pineapple/orange juice mixed. You can buy the low acidic kind if you have ulsers or whatever. I like mine tart.
It always works and believe it or not you would think it would keep you up. However, the actual juices of the pineapple and orange mixed triggers the menatosin to actually put you to sleep. Just drink the hole gallon.
