ok...eveyone out there when they first think of disabilities...they automatically think of someone in a wheel chair...or a mentally retarted person...well just to let you all know... EVERYONE has disabilities...some are just more apparent than others....
my disabilities...which are a lot...include...anemia, anger, depression....right now pregnancy...etc...there are a lot of things that keep me from doing certain activities...
what are your disabilities? think hard about this too...maybe when you see your disabilities... you are less apt to judge people who have more visible disabilities...it's time to open your eyes people...and stop judging....but start relating...

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 8/27/2005 11:55:36 AM | | I have a form of dyslexia...mind you I can read and write....it's not that full blown. I mean when it comes to certian things...remembering information, names, having to take time to do a math problem....little things that sort of stall me in the head. That is a disability...and it's more common then anyone might think. | |

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 8/27/2005 11:56:51 AM | | I have hearing aids. At first glance I appear deaf and people start signing. But I don't know sign! I am deaf but with the hearing aids I hear well enough to speak and in fact went to speech therapy for years and years when growing up as a kid. Of course being this way has taught me to be way more tolerant of people than most, even if they don't have disablities. You see its not the disability its that noone's perfect. | |

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 8/29/2005 1:40:47 AM | | Hmmm... I have plenty although if you look at me you wouldn't really notice unless I was trying to use the stairs. I have some orthopedic issues with both legs and surgery just about every year on one leg or the other. I'm currently building strength in one leg for surgery on the other one soon. I can walk pretty normal but can't run and have to take it slow and one-legged on stairs. I am also dyslexic but most people don't notice that. I've learned to read and write around it so it isn't really an issue for me anymore. I had lost almost all of my hearing due to chemo but fairly recently got most of it back. My journey has been an eye opener over the years. I've had people get mad at me for not responding only to find out I hadn't heard anything they said. It's hard if you look healthy cuz then people just assume you are fine and either faking or trying to take advantage of things. We live in a sad world where society doesn't have room for people who fit outside the standards. | |

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 8/29/2005 2:58:48 AM | | Due partially to my work schedule and partially to stress, I am ALWAYS tired. Even on a good day, when I feel motivated and energetic, it doesn't last long. On my days off, I am either fighting the feeling, or sleeping/relaxing to the point of frustration. If I don't have anything in particular that I need to get done, I can waste a whole day reading on the couch/watching TV and movies. It's not really who I am and I don't like the way I get mistaken for lazy because of it. | |

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 8/29/2005 9:37:13 PM | wow so far so good...it sometimes gets hard to think of ways that you are disabled... and being disabled is not a bad thing...it's just something that everyone has to deal with...for most it's just from time to time...i can relate to a couple of you who have dyslexia...my mother has that...and there has been several times that i've had to kinda correct her b/c she read the wrong time...or she accidently wrote the grocery list backwards...we often don't think of these things as a disability...but if it affects your life in a rather bad way...and prevents you from doing certain things...then the best way to describe it is a disability...
i have another one...one that i just found out...i was told a couple years ago that i was bipolar...of course i didn't listen...figured they were just blowing air out their butts...but the more and more i thought about it lately...the more and more i wondered about it...so i decided to look it up...research it...and it does sound like i could possibly be bipolar...now knowing this...it does explain a few things...and i'm going to talk to my doctor about this... because i believe most disabilities can be fixed...and if you can find a way to fix it...then i'd say go ahead...
my advice for you jentle jim...i know where you're coming from...i have had a bad problem with sleeping...or having the lack of desire to do things...just from the way i feel...but then i found out that a lot of where that was coming from was the lack of iron gettin into my system...so i am catagorized as anemic...which is an iron deficiancy...with the lack of iron... comes the lack of strength and desires...it kinda feels like the physical form of depression...but this is something that can easily be fixed...just by getting more iron in your system... i suggest that you should check up with your doctor...get a blood/glucose test done...and they can tell within five min. if you have low iron...

I'm always tired. always. ever since I've been little. the only times I'm not tired, I end up exersicing, socializing, getting things I need to get done, done, etc etc etc.
maybe I should get meds or something

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 8/30/2005 2:03:16 AM | | That's not the first time someone has suggested iron deficiencies...I've had bloodwork done recently, checking for diabetes, among other things. The results came back that for the entire array of common blood-found problems, I am healthy and well-balanced. Maybe I'll just try taking some extra vitamins and see what happens...thanks! | |

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 9/1/2005 2:02:57 PM | Ok well there are lots of self-identification re disability which I find interesting. There is a vast difference between what we identify as disability and what the government and medical profession identify as disability.
Me I have mild Cerebral Palsy (a neuromuscular condition that effects my gait and balance) I kind of limp and ice and snow are not my friends lol...
Depression something I live with but I deal with it so others don't have to.
I have learning disabilities but still did very well at university.
I also have hearing loss and wear hearing aids in both ears.
Even with all these conditions I do not have a disabled mentality. I do what I need to do and enjoy life. It is all a matter of attitude IMO.

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 9/1/2005 4:32:19 PM | I think my worst disability is being obsessive compulsive. It hits every aspect of the things i do. Trying to get everything "perfect" can get extremely irritating and you never seem to be finished with anything, and theres always something new you feel you have to do. | |

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 9/4/2005 8:17:41 PM | | boy i can relate to quite a lot of you...yeah...a lot of these "disabilities" you couldn't get paid for...but doesn't mean that they don't stop you from doing day to day things...or it doesn't mean they don't affect relationships in your life...i've lost a lot of people i cared about because of the way i was...and it's really hard to actually look at yourself and identify what is wrong...it's even harder to try to do something about it...but i am a strong believer that you have a choice to let these things cripple you or not...these things may tend to affect my life...but i choose not to let them control my life...get what i'm saying? hopefully one day i can leave some of these disabilities behind me... | |

| Disabilities...(and the misconceptions)...what's yours? Posted: 12/30/2005 9:51:52 PM | I have overbite. Not that visable most of the time because I keep my mouth closed. I keep my teeth clean but when I smile big it's noticable. Unfortunately some women don't like that and they've told me about this.
Hey, it's their loss I figure :)
