Canada offers it's entire emergency stockpile

From the Vancouver sun-sept 3/05 by Sharon Kirkey

Ottawa-Canada is prepared to send it's entire national emergency stockpile to the flood-ravaged southern U.S.states as emergency workers struggle to contain a public health disaster unfolding in hurricane Katrina's wake.
Worth about 300 million and housed in half a dozen strategically placed depots across the country, the stockpile includes hospital beds and blankets, pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, and 165 field hospitals. Each hospital has 200 beds that can be deployed within 24 hours and set up in schools, community centres, concert halls and other buildings.
Canada has also offered water purification tablets, gloves, masks, bandages and surgical instruments in "mini clinics"that can be carried in backpacks, federal health minister Ujjal Dosanjh said Friday.
Also Friday, the first team of 25 red cross volunteers travelled to Houston,Texas,to begin three-week assignments with the American red cross. The Canadians will help at 275 shelters and in preparing more than 500,000 hot meals daily at the shelters and mobile feeding units as part of the largest ever American red cross relief operation.
At least 100 Canadian volunteers will be sent to the affected regions in the coming weeks.

Hopefully this will help put to rest the naysayers negative comments about the lack of help and brotherhood coming from Canada and other countries during Americas time of need.Of course the average Canadian will be dipping into their pocketbooks when it's possible and I'm sure there will be a large response of monetary aid in the coming days and weeks as well.Despite what some say on these forums,Canadians are thinking of the people of the affected areas and do truly care.

wow.

thanks for this post.

i too am incredulous at the criticism, esp. in the face of what i see as a day to day ignoring here in the US of those who are living like refugees for some reason other than a natural disaster.

i didn't know much about canadians (hey, i am an american, awareness of others is discouraged, but i am trying) till i moved to northern minnesota, but the more i get to know canada and canadians, the closer i am to moving past northern minnesota and across the border next time.

peace

We also know you would do exactly the same thing were the situation reversed.

We could all go back to arguing right after everything was back to normal.

Trudeau said that living next to the states was like being a mouse in bed with an elephant. Although we have had our differences in the past and probably will in the future, come the end of the day we are both friedns and nieghbors. When the chips are down, friends and nieghbors are there for one another and that's about the long and short of it. Good Luck.

Hi, Montreal Guy (and everyone else):

You noted that we in the U.S. would do the same if the situation were reversed. Yes, of course, we obviously would make such an offer, but we don't have the emergency stockpiles to provide! That is just one of the things that makes this such a royal cluster F**K! In the U.S. we have FEMA, the Federal Emergency Managment Agency, AND the vaunted, post-9/11, President George W. Stinking Bush Department of Homeland Security. Did they open the doors on a series of warehouses and release tons of vital goods for the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama? Did trucks and planes start ferrying these goods within 24 hours after landfall of the storm?

It is very gracious of you to suppose we would be so willing and able to help out Canadians in an event such as this hurricane. Willing, yes. However, the fact is we can't even help ourselves. The gross incompetence, the lack of any real planning, or meaningful timely response makes me sick.

Thanks for the thought.

David
