| | What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start?Page 1 of 2 (1, 2) | I play a brazilan drum called a surdo in a percussion band. I started about 5 years ago. I love it because I have no formal music training and I get to perform all the time. My dream is to play kit.

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 9/15/2005 10:38:39 PM | Been playing for 10 years now. I've been playing on an old 5 piece Ludwig Rockstar kit. I use a DW double bass pedal. Remo black batter white pin stripe heads. Ahead sticks. Zildjian Z Custom cymbols.
I play the heavy stuff. I LOVE my 19" Z CUSTOM THRASH RIDE
I played in the Zildjian World Tour Competition back in 1998. You had to play an original 5 minute drum solo on stage in front of hundreds of people. It was really cool! You were able to set up the drums however you wanted and with what ever you wanted....I swear after I finished setting up I looked like I was playing for "Dream Theatre" or something....lol. In my state I came in 3rd place out of 3,500 contestants. I won a TON of cool stuff from Zildjian & Mars Music.

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 9/16/2005 3:38:58 AM | | I`m 27 and I`ve been playing since I was 6. As for what I play I don`t limit myself to 1 style I range from blues and jazz all the way to death metal,I love to challenge myself and the only way to get better is to keep an open mind on musical styles. | |

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 5/12/2006 7:08:46 PM | I started playing instruments when I was 3, normal in my family.
I play drums and percussion, my favourite being drum kit/trap drums.
The style I am most comfortable with is Rock, but I do dabble into other areas.

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 5/20/2006 8:46:30 AM | | Been playing drums since I was 14. I don't really have a style limit, since I like to challenge myself, but if I had to choose I guess I say maybe mainstream fusion. I really like odd time measures and technicallity. Some might say I'm a "busy" player! I just like to be tight with the other musicians I'm playing with. | |

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 5/29/2006 1:01:05 PM | In '98 I saw this Rogers Kit (circa 1964) in a pawn shop, complete with cymbols (Omar) and hardware all for $150 (cnd). I knew it was worth a lot more (about $600-700) so I bought it thinking to turn it around and make a few hundred. Well I started playing with them and fell in love. Now I would never sell my Kit.
Then a friend went to Africa a few years back for a summer of Drumming and came home with a dozen Djembes. Well next you know I'm into hand drums and now have bongos, congas and a tumba as well. My biggest problem is storage, my room is so packed I can't fit any more in....

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 6/3/2006 3:06:05 AM | 1994-1996, i quit. got back in to it in 2000, 2005 i had to quit for good (carpel tunnel)
i did jazz, blues, rock, trash metal (slayer), death metal (dying fetus, cannibal corpse, six feet under), dabbled in latin, dabbled in funk.
the best was crossing death metal styling in with classic rock songs.

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 8/9/2006 4:27:53 AM | I started playing in 1978 and have played continuously since (save a couple years off when I was going back to college). I remember wanting to play like Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Alex Van Halen, Stuart Copeland, Billy Cobham, Roger Taylor and lots of other more obscure drummers. Hell, I just wanted to rock out!!! But the best advise I would give you is this...
Play what you enjoy, never give up and start every new beat slow. Once you master the beat then speed it up. Get a metronome too, there's nothing more annoying than a drummer who can't keep time.
As for favorite kits; LUDWIG has my vote!
Good luck! | |

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 3/19/2007 2:40:30 AM | I play......Jazz/Rock/Reggae
Started playing in 1968 on a circa 1944 BDP Slingerland Radio Kit set.
I now sell vintage drums/cymbals for a living (have for 15 years),so I get all sorts of cool stuff going through my hands.....
TURKISH K's, OLD A's, Paiste 602's cymbals
Gretsch/Rogers/Ludwig/Leedy drums etc
I have sold to lots of famous bands too,so I go to many free shows, usually with aftershow passes.
Fun,Fun! | |

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 3/19/2007 9:45:23 AM | | I started playing drums in '71 and have been playing continuously ever since. I play mostly rock based stuff but I incorporate a lot of elements of jazz, funk, swing, and latin in my playing. I have several kits but my main one is a mid 60's sparkle red ludwig. | |

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 3/19/2007 4:47:12 PM | | I have played all types from a five piece set, congos, I even have a djembe. As far as styles I have played just about all of them, Do yourself a favor and listen to "Get on the Goodfoot", by James Brown, "Four Sticks", by Zeppelin , "Jingo" by Santana, and even Gene Krupa on "Sing,Sing, Sing. Listening to any of these songs if you didn't admire drummers, you will afterwards. | |

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 3/26/2007 2:45:49 PM | I started learning the Scottish Field Drum when I was 10, and played in a bagpipe band until I was 18. After that, college and summer jobs pretty much got in the way. I started to learn jazz on a standard 5 peice set at age 12, two years after I had learned most of the snare rudiments. I played the set until I was 22, and then I decided it was time to grow the heck up! That was a mistake! I bought a set again two years ago, and I wished that I had never stopped playing. But that's all right. I listened to so much music in that eight year span that--when my chops finally came back, after playing for six to eight months--I'm much better now than I ever was at the age of 22.
On the set I enjoy playing shuffles, especially half-time shuffles, the ones that Bernard Purdie developed. His shuffles are tough to groove, but when you're playing them smoothly . . . there isn't a better feeling on the drums, since each limb is doing something complicated.
Edit: Although I am a huge fan of the blues (as my profile states), I don't exactly enjoy playing it. I enjoy playing in small combos more than anything. There's a lot of freedom of expression in jazz when you only play with the rhythm section--i.e. bass, piano, and guitar.

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 3/28/2007 9:06:45 PM | | I like to play to anything, took drum lessons and playing for about 2 and half years. The guys that got me interested in drumming are Neil Peart (Rush), Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos band), Mick Tucker (the Sweet) and (of course..) Buddy Rich. | |

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 3/29/2007 8:02:45 PM | When I'm in a really boring, long meeting, I find myself doing rudiments with my feet- flam-a-diddles and rata-ma-cues.
That's okay if the floor's carpeted but hard floors draw too much attention.

| What kind of drumming do you do and when did you start? Posted: 3/30/2007 12:50:25 PM | Hmm , I am very interested in this topic :) well done , but I just want to see the reaction and thoughts of Drummers about drum programming :). Well years ago drummers thought they would become redundant , namely one a guy in my brothers band , anyway abviously you didnt lol.
So yeah I bought an Mc-303 in 1997 and learnt how to program it , my computing skills really helped and my love of music too offcourse , and I still use grooveboxes and synths to make rhythms , well full songs if I can just start up again I vow to start my new song this Aprill ugh , fingers crossed.
So yeah using drums and grooveboxes in the same songs also sounds superb :) . Let me know how you drummers feel about drum machines and grooveboxes please ?
