I'm the night manager of a hotel here in avondale louisiana (just outside of new orleans) and most of the people here are volunteers from out of state and some even from other countries. The outpouring of generosity that I've seen in the past month has literally changed the way I look at life. so thanx again:) | |

| KATRINA SURVIVORS TALK HERE Posted: 7/14/2006 7:54:38 PM | I'm from Slidell and rode out the storm in Zachary just north of Baton Rouge. I wound up taking my friends' kids to their grandparents' while they stayed to take care of the house then coming back to help finish ripping out the rest afterward. Luckily my place was ok and just needed debris from trees and such removed. I took lots of pictures and have sold a number of them through stock photo agencies (send me a note if you want a link to see some) . I am working for Lowe's these days and it's amazing to see the cycles of rebuilding. You see the same folks come in to buy tools and such for gutting then a bit later they're buying sheetrock and such, then paint and flooring then the various trims and accessories.
I'm originally from up north and I regularly get asked if I plan to stay. So far my response has always been that unless we've got katrina II headed right for us I am not leaving, and even then it would just be far enough inland to ride it out before returning. Long term I might move, but it won't be the hurricane's that make me leave.
Here's hoping we have a gentle hurricane season this year

| KATRINA SURVIVORS TALK HERE Posted: 8/7/2006 9:13:47 AM | i was living in Slidell over at Oak Harbor Marina area,,worked and lived there. I rode that storm out in my closet. As much as I loved the area and the people at the marina I left. My daughter came and got me and now I live in Vegas. I don't think at my age ,,alone,,I could handle going though another storm. I am not crazy about Vegas but for now I feel safe anyways. I feel for all that lost family,,friends,,I was lucky,,I made it though the storm lost car and some personal items but it scared the willeys out of me and I don't want to experience it again. I am used to blizzards,,bad thunder storms and such rode plenty of them out. Good luck to you all who are staying and making a go of your life. I admire your courage. | |

| KATRINA SURVIVORS TALK HERE Posted: 2/6/2007 3:21:15 PM | | Hi everybody. My name is Jack. I am from Chalmette and now live in Slidell. I road Katrina out at the Hilton in New Orleans. I wanted to stay close to work. That was not a good idea. I left Tuesday and let me tell you it was the worst experince I have ever been through. The weird thing is the Hurrican was not the big deal it was after when all the bad stuff happend. People passing out due to the heat, people yelling at eachother it was bad. | |

| KATRINA SURVIVORS TALK HERE Posted: 9/1/2007 9:28:24 AM | | Hi I am a survior, I live in Tangiphoa Parish and well no one has said anything about what we got here. Well I road the storm out at a shealther where the wind was so bad it ripped trees up out of the ground and slammed them into houses by the roots. We got a lot of rude ppl from the N.Orleans area down here. We was without power in our shealther. We had no water, and no way to make anything for people to drink. We was on our last leg. When we finilly after three days of being at the shealther got relief. We went home to find out trailor was destoried the back wall was out in the kitchen. The roof had been lifted and set back down. The porch not standing on one side. Three kids and no lites. Two kids still on milk. Poor things where crying for milk. I ran out of milk for my baby. He was on formula and I started giving him whole milk or whatever I could get my hands on that was drinkable. I was not going to let my kids do without. MRE's not the best food but a fast fix. Some ppl said it was like eating dog food others where thankful they had it. Some ppl learned to share and share alike. Other would spit on you. This was the worst days of my life as I had seen till then. | |

| KATRINA SURVIVORS TALK HERE Posted: 9/10/2007 7:09:52 AM | | I am not sure how to put this. I have moved out of this state more times then one person has ever slapped me. Still I keep coming back for more. I road out Katrina in a shelther. It was not that bad until you could look out the windows and see trees being ripped up by the roots. I am a mother of three, one at the time still on formula and no way to get any. I ran out and there where no stores open and the ones that were didn't have milk, dipers, or any other baby items. It was death as I new it. I can still remember ppl talking about there familes and not knowing where anyone was. Kids still lost and couldn't fine there parents. I can still here the mouths of all the rude ppl saying the MRE's where like dog food. I know it was bad but ppl need to be thankful we have had two good years. I hope to never see another hurrican like this one was. We still hae it bad here. Looking for new houses or fixing the old one we have. Paint, walls, and ecttttt.... can be replaced but memories will last a lifetime and if you will please send me the link I would like to see the pics. I have many pics myself of what happenend here in this area. | |

| KATRINA SURVIVORS TALK HERE Posted: 9/20/2009 2:23:44 AM | I live in Brisbane, Australia. I visited Sulpha December after katrina almost wiped you guys off the map. I stayed with friends and I just couldn't believe the devistation. I worked for 8 weeks helping to clear trees. Such a waste of of the wood from all those trees. I just kept saying......OH MY GAUDDDDDD. OH MY.......I just don't know how ye all get over that. We are so lucky here in Australia. We really come together as a massive force and things more very quickly. Mateship is the backbone of our country.
I do hope you are all recovering now and look forward to my next visit so I can see the rebuilding of you countryside.
