| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 12/3/2004 7:58:40 AM | I didn't know where to post this, so if this is the wrong place... I appologize. K, I was wondering if anyone here has went through the surgery or is wanting to get Lasik eye surgery. I just had it and am wondering how the experience went for others. Did it hurt? What were the post-surgery side effects? etc. What is your reaction to it if you havn't had it yet?

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 12/3/2004 9:15:25 AM | | Can you guys (gals) tell about your experience? My boyfriend is thinking about it, but he's nervous. Maybe having some insight from people that have had it would help him in his decision making. | |

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 12/3/2004 9:43:06 AM | Well, the exam they give you to determine if you're a candidate is pretty quick and painless. When they tested me for glaucoma it hurt because the lady didn't let the eye numbing drops take effect. The surgery itself was very traumatic. They told me it wouldn't hurt, but it did. But I think my panic made the pain more intense... or perhaps I just don't handle pain well. They also gave me 5 mg of valium that didn't do sh*t. You go into the opperating room and they ask you when your birthday is to make sure you're the right person. Then they put more numbing drops into your eyes and tell you to look at this flashing red light. My whole body tensed up and I forgot to breathe. I was such a baby lol. They tape your eyelashes and lower eye lid back so you can't blink and put this pressure device on your eye. I was sooo terrified.. I was swearing and telling them that something wasn't right. The other nurses were telling me that child birth would be so much worse and I said I would never have kids anyway. Heh. They had to call in another nurse to hold my hand... and later I found out that I squeezed it so hard it had turned blue. After they finished they gave me some sunglasses to wear and helped me up. They then took me to another quieter room with a big recliner and told me to relax. I just started balling my eyes out. It was horrible. The surgeon told my bf and my dad that everything went fine but I wasn't too happy with them right now. Right after it didn't hurt at all, but on the car ride home, they started burning and pinching.... and by the time I got home to lay down, it hurt so much I started crying again harder and harder and my bf was trying to calm me down. Even with my eyes closed, if I moved my eyes under my eye lids it hurt soooo bad. I took tylenol and basically cried myself to sleep. When I awoke 6 hours later, I felt a lot better and was seeing much more clearer. I started putting drops in which I do with 3 different kinds 4 times a day. They are still sore and this morning woke up to find that there was a pinkish red spot on my left eye. It supposedly is a temporary bruise from the surgery. I just want it to heal up fast because this dull aching and the goggles I have to wear at night are getting old. So yeah, that's my experience. Don't let it scare you away from the procedure all together. I'm sure most people here would handle it far better than I did lol.

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 12/3/2004 12:30:16 PM | | I know a lot of people that have done this. They had absolutely nothing bad to say about it. I have been thinking about doing it myself. There is a ton of info on the web about it. Best thing you can do is get him to go talk to the Doc about it. They will hold free consultations and some will let you watch the surgery happen. Get lots of references from the Doc and CALL THEM. Very important to talk to the people he as worked on. | |

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 12/4/2004 6:26:17 AM | I had it done about 3 yrs ago, I was soooo tired of contact lenses and glasses. Yes I was nervous, especially at the office waiting to go in, at least they give you some Valium first (I should have taken the 2 they offered instead of 1). I went to a dr that was recommended by coworkers, not the ones advertised on radio and tv. To me they are the "assembly line" drs. My coworker had hers done at the same doc I did but her husband went to the "assembly line" doc. He ended up having problems with an infection, no idea how that happened, less quality maybe? I figured, what were the chances of something major going wrong, slim. And if something did go wrong it would prob be with just one eye, thats what I told myself to get through it. I am so glad I had it done! My son drove me, he went in the room with me and actually looked in the machine at my eye while the doc was doing the surgery. My vision was very hazed right afterward, went home and took the pain pill before the pain started and slept alot. I had just a little pain when I woke up here and there. Dont even try to rub your eyes for awhile! Big no no! I did have halo around lights at first but that went away. They get you to come in the office the next day and check their work and vision. I wish I could afford to get the "old people reading" lasik done. I was told it has to do with the back part of the eye, not the front where my lasik was performed. I have a couple of friends that has monovision where they just get one eye done and the other for close up reading, but I wore one contact lens before and it drove me crazy. | |

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 12/14/2006 10:17:00 PM | So Kimberly...they taped your eyes back with tape? Sounds like that doctor had a chamber of horrors. I had mine done about 3 years ago and he had a machine that held my eyelid open. He came up from behind me and told me to just look at the light and keep still and I hear a kind of beeping sound and it was over in a flash. Of course befor I went I sat out in my car and had a couple of glasses of red wine to relax me so I never felt anything I did one eye one week and 2 weeks later did the other eye, just in case anything went wrong I would at least have one good eye. | |

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 9/20/2007 10:13:39 PM | | I just had it done last week and let me tell you... within one week, I can see things I never thought possible. I am extremely pleased with the outcome. | |

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 9/21/2007 10:45:23 PM | | I had mine done 2 years ago. It was painless (just lots of pressure) and it was one of the best things that I have done for myself. | |

| Not a chance. Posted: 6/14/2008 6:38:51 PM | You could not pay me enough to have this procedure and the idea that someone would want me to pay them to shoot me in the eyeball with a tissue blasting laser is ludicrous, at best. My vision is way more important to me than my vanity. If the number of things that have bounced off of my eye glasses were not enough to dissuade me from it, the amount of known things that can go wrong during and after the operation is plenty.
Further , the technology is not even 20 years old yet and they have no idea what effects "successful" surgery will have later in life...and I'm not interested in risking my vision as a human lab rat.
And if all that wasn't enough, my cousin's wife's sister now has double vision, has to wear dark sunglasses 24/7 and can no longer drive.
Definitely not for me.

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 6/14/2008 11:58:45 PM | Had the surgery, and it was brilliant! Took a 2 hour nap, woke up and the bit of burning in the eyes was gone. I watched a DVD that night clear as a bell. The 'halos' stopped after 2-3 months. It's been 10 months now, and zero problems.
Life is so good without glasses/ contacts!

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/5/2008 4:46:16 PM | I recently saw a doctor for consultation for Lasik. I was 9 yrs old when I started wearing glasses and then 15 when I was fitted for contact lenses. I am 47 now and, it drives me crazy to have to wear either contacts or glasses. I opted to do this for my birthday gift to myself. I went in for the follow-up appointment on July 2nd since the first appointment I got some disheartening news that I was not necessarily a candidate for Lasik. I was upset, but told to take out my contacts and wear my glasses only for two weeks and then return to see if my corneas were healing. Apparently from wearing my contacts for so many years, my corneas had "warped" and, my eyes were dependent on the contacts. I just saw the doctor on July 2nd and got the good news that my eyes were definitely reverting back to "normal", but that I needed to continue to wear my glasses for another 4 weeks to see if they were ready for the procedure. It was a good sign that my eyes are improving and that I have an appointment to return on July 30th to see the outcome. (Wish me luck please!!) In any case, the doctor I saw has an excellent 12 year track record that he produced that shows that he has not had any complications in any of his patients in the 12 years that he has been performing this surgery. He also has a huge picture window for prospective patients to see the surgery being performed on Thursdays from 9-11 am when he performs the surgery. I am scheduled if all goes well to have my eyes dilated and checked to see if they are healthy on August 4th, 2008 and if given the OK....have the surgery on August 7th, 2008. I am so excited that I am ready to do a "cucaracha" dance on my glasses once I can see. Although I won't have to put contacts in my eyes or wear glasses regularly, I will STILL have to wear reading glasses to see books, magazines, phone books, if needed. All in all, the benefits of not having to use solutions, sterilizers, etc....and purchasing glasses and contact lenses is a blessing to be praying for. Wish me luck all..I will keep you updated with posts.

P. S. Besides, you'll be able to gaze into my GREEN EYES directly with no obstacles in the way. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/5/2008 9:36:23 PM | LASIK Rocks! I had it done, and I am ever so glad that I did. I had very bad eyesight before the surgery--I could not even see the alarm clock when I woke up in the morning and was very dependent on my contacts. I could never wear eyeglasses because the strong prescription distorted my vision so much that I could not function.
The surgery wasn't bad at all. The doctor did a great job--I now have 20/15 left, 20/25 right. I only use glasses for driving at night to correct the 20/25 because it is much more noticeable at night than during the day. I also like using eyeglasses at night for driving because of the anti-glare lenses. I wear regular sunglasses for day driving, so I'm already used to having some sort of glasses on my face when I am driving. The prescription for my right eye is so weak that I don't see any distortion with the corrective lens. I am THRILLED with the difference in lifestyle and being able to see as well as I do. Now I can swim in the ocean without even so much as giving a thought to losing a contact. I was so blind that I didn't dare swim without contact lenses and I had to be careful to avoid losing a lens. Now I can just jump right in!
Best of all, the very slight nearsightedness in my right eye allows me to read without glasses! YAY!!
I don't even have a corrective lenses restriction on my driver's license I also love being able to wake up and SEE!

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/22/2008 8:56:09 PM | Okay..I am so very excited. went to the doc's office today to follow-up and see how my eyes are progressing with wearing my glasses and NOT my contact lenses. My eyes are ready and improving. If I get "the call" tomorrow that it is "a go", then I am scheduled to have my eyes dilated this Friday 7/25 and having the lasik procedure on Thursday, July 31st. Whoo hoo.....omg...can't believe it.
Wish me luck...will keep you posted.
~~Beth~~
P. S. I think I need the valium NOW and can't wait until the 31st...LOL

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/22/2008 9:15:24 PM | I HAD rk, NOT LASIX.
IT HURT LIKE HEEL-O!!! BUT I AM SOOOOOO HAPPY THAT I DID IT.
I WAS 20/150ISH AND THE NEXT DAY AFTER SURGERY I WAS 20/5!!!!!!!!
|
| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/28/2008 8:46:25 PM | Meoowzie: Could you elaborate on the RK surgery versus the Lasik surgery and how long ago you had it?
I JUST found out after being scheduled for July 31st (Thursday) to have lasik that my corneas are too thin and am NOT a candidate for the flap/hinge type of lasik surgery. The doctors want to zap each eye directly with the laser and the best I can hope to see is about 20/40 or 20/30 and will have to still wear glasses and/or contacts to correct the vision...so why bother? I would sure like to hear yours (and anyone else's) views on this ....I am going to another place that deals in more options to see what they have to say.
Thank you, ~~Beth~~ | |

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/29/2008 12:44:59 AM | Don't get it done, just eat foods high in antioxidants! Carrots are very good for the eyes.
Here is a link about it and this should scare you enough not to do it.

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/29/2008 6:31:01 AM | RK radial keratotomy (sp?) it takes small knives and cuts the corneas to adjust your vision. it is an older procedure than lasix. it is an a;ternative for some that cannot have lasix.
BUT if your corneas are so thin, try the dietary first.

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/30/2008 5:21:32 AM | | I've been trying to conquer my fear of eye surgery and reading about your experience has put me right off now! Anyway, have you seen all the other adverts in those clinics? Teeth whitening, face lifts, botox... you could easily come out of there looking like some type of android. | |

Amazed that you'd take their opinions ahead of mine. Sort yourself out!
The chance of something going wrong is something like 1% nowadays, maybe less than that. I've had no side-effects whatsoever and I literally used to blind, had a dangerously large retina (or something) and had a fluctuating prescription.
I've still got 20/20 vision now, and even if it doesn't last forever, it's worth the money for the time that it DOES last.

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/31/2008 5:02:52 PM | I use spend 10 minites putting my Rgp hard contacts on my eyes be for going to work and after lasik I have more free time be for going to work :):)
I had the RGP hard contacts that I can wear for a week they where good a night of having fun with out worrying about taking the contacts out. just wear them for 2 days at a time.

| Lasik eye surgery Posted: 7/31/2008 5:13:15 PM | | you can join the police if you wear only very weak prescription glasses, but you can't join even with perfect sight once you have had laser eye surgery | |
