| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/14/2005 10:33:45 PM | Last year went to the humane society to get a dog, a large dog, in an attempt to replace my long-departed Briard my daughter had given to me as a pup years ago. Instead of large, I was adopted by a little Jack Russel mixed terrier and we've become inseparable. He's no substitute for humans but I now understand Walt Whitman's line "I think I could turn and live with animals. They do not sweat and whine about their condition ..."
Why is it we love animals so much? Do some people care more about their pets than their spouse or children? Can you love a pet too much?
I don't think the Enquirer or Star has yet covered this topic (this is where I get all my information)

He hates shopping as much as I do.
He gazes adoringly at me when I work on my car.
He cuddles me when I'm ill instead of telling me not to breathe on him.
And I've taught him to dance.

She's always happy, always ready to play, always wants to snuggle and good for a laugh. Animals are so important in my life. I've always loved them and will continue to. I could never be with someone who hated animals.

I was terrified when I thought he was dying from a ruptured hernia..... turned out to be a testicle that grew north instead of south but was easily fixed.
Is he as important as ppl? Fred is people!

And, heard dozens of jokes about sheep in Montana but cowboys in Montana get a little touchy talking about their sheep. Oh what the hell, what do you call a cowboy driving a load of sheep through Montana?

(and no that does not include any extra curricular activities some people may enjoy with their pets)

One example was that my dog refused to eat dog-food and only people food - if she saw me pretending to eat her food only then would she eat it. Hey, if it's good enough for him.... SUCKER!!

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 12:27:49 AM | | This is frustrating...why can't you love a dog as much as a human. The have the same basic needs as humans, food, shelter and oxygen. Just as humans they cry when wounded. They wag we smile, they bark we yell, they lick we kiss, they snuggle and we snuggle them back. One thing that is a noticable difference between humans and dogs is that dogs love unconditional...we as humans have many conditions. Far more then we even realize. Should we not love them because their brains are not structured like ours or that they don't show their emotions as we do? Does this mean that anyone who is different is unloveable...? No! So, why can't someone love their dog as much as they love their children? I can't see a reason why not...so love you dogs the way you choose and if anyone bugs ya about it...tell your dog to bite them! | |

Why do I think you'd be surprised by that?

I walk up to her and she wraps her neck around me to give me a hug. She especially likes to snoop in my car. and maybe find a treat. I love dogs and cats but horses are better.

If it ever came to a point where i was told i had to make a decision between my cats or a man,,id take my cats anyday. Had my cats for 17 yrs and there's no way id have given them up for anyone.
True pet lovers like the ones you are reading here,,all know that their pets are like children to them. I was closer to my cats than i was to most people! lol

This happend about 2 years ago and he's a 35 year old business man - a jet setter always flying around the world.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 2:05:05 AM | Pets are a very important part in some peoples lives. tHey take care, commitment. They give unconditional love...well some of them haha [ unlike my goldfish, it just wants to be fed] . They are company. I wont get into the morals of animals vs people though lol. Thats a 10 page thread on its won
You raise some really interesting questions here.
No I dont think a pet should replace or be cared about more than children or spouses. Your key family and human relationships should come first unless you have a bad spouse of course or no spouse -
If you dont have children or partners I don tsee why people cant love them as much as a child etc though.
Its been proven it can really help with the ill and elderly. Im not sure about other countries, but here we have " Pets as Therapy" as a really well established programme for people with illnesses etc
Yet Animal abuse is disgusting and as heinous as child abuse to me. You really should only have one if you are committed to the time and well being different pets require. I think they are a great way of teaching children responsibility and establishing loving relationships when they are young
So I guess Im saying they are very important, but determing if they are as important as people is up to the individuals circumnstance. Would you place the care of the family rabbit over your child if you had to choose. No. But in most normal circumnstances most people can place a lot of love and importance with their domestic animals.

I can in 1 minute make a list of 20 human beings that are not worthy of the life of my late dog. Give me more time and I'll give you a big enough list. Human life is precious too, but beyond your household it's a toss up between your dog & cat vs certain breeds of humans.

I know just what you mean! My cats are just over 4 years old, and they are wonderful company. They have very different personalities, though both are awfully sweet.
They've got their routines down pat; my black cat is the mischief-maker, and her avocation is nagging me for chow whenever it's within 2 hours of dinner time, the perq being that she gets to eat first. The white one's clearly reincarnated from a supermodel, judging by the way she's constantly posing...looks like a Betty Grable pinup from the 40s, only furry...lol
This same cat's also the one who nags me if I get a half hour or more past my bed time during the week...which is also her time to pass out for a while with me and get her belly scratched. Since she's the one who does this I'm assuming she's the Alpha Babe of the two, though once in a blue moon I'll find my black panther curled up beside me...how do they decide who's got the duty???
The cats amuse themselves, too (about 11 AM is WWF Hour, when they practice their stalking, chasing and judo throws), though I wish they'd learn to put the DVDs back in the order I left 'em!
Mind you, I do like dogs, but they're higher maintenance than I can take at the moment, plus I kind of like the dynamic better with cats. A dog's ALWAYS your best pal, while with cats you kinda have to work at the relationship
