Who else thinks Jr. is over rated?

I think Jr. is only recognized because of his dad. He is a alright driver but he sucks. He makes a lot of money off his fans though.

That is so not true. This year he is not doing well as a driver but that is because he has bad cars and he did not have a good pit crew and crew chief. Now that he is going to be back with Tony Eury Jr and he will be back in the Cars he was driving last year he will be back in the Chase like he was last year. Dale Jr. never wanted or got anything from being Dale Sr. son. His father would not allow that to happen to his son. If Dale Jr. wanted anything in life his father made Jr work for it even when it came to racing. His father made him work in his garage to earn money to buy a car so that he could race it. If anything, Jr's life is harder because everyone expect him to be as good as his father. But Dale Sr. didn't win all his Nascar Championships until later in life. Dale Sr didn't even win Daytona until way late in life and yet Jr. won it in his 20's. I bet you if you pulled the stats of Sr. when he was Jr.'s age right now you would find that Jr. is probably just as good a race car driver. Dale Jr. learned to drive from his father and all his father racing friends such as Rusty Wallace, Darrel Waltrip, etc. I am not saying Dale Jr. is the best race driver in Nascar because I don't think he is yet but he definitely does not suck. There are circumstances that are causing him to fail right now and none of it is his driving skill. Jr just had bad luck this year, he was in a lot of wrecks, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time on the track, blown engines, blown tires, Crew Chief changes, car changes (Michaels Waltrips old cars - if Michael couldn't get these cars to victory lane last year, why do they think Jr could???????)... Those are just many circumstances that are NOT Jr's fault and none of them have to do with Jr.'s driving........ ........

Jimmy~~well I have to say that Alarm is right! Jr. has had many problems this year and most of it was not his fault. Now I'm going to go a little further and out on a limb with my own theory of what also was up with Jr. this year........
Jr. is exausted. He's been in the lime light his entire racing career and I think that he wanted to back off for awhile. Now I'm not saying that his effort for the wins were not there but I think he just wanted out of the spotlight for awhile. He couldn't keep a relationship with a girlfriend due to all his publicity. Now add this to all the commercials that he has been doing. I do not know any other driver that does that many commercials. He is overwhelmed and he had to apply the pressure somewhere. His job was affected by this.
Jr. just tiurned 31 on Mon. the 10th. (My b-day too! lol) and he's still a babe in the circuit. Experience will show that Jr. is going to be a great. But as with most people in the world it takes time and practice.
I am not a Jr. fan. I'm a die-hard Tony fan but I hold Jr. with a respect that he has earned in my eyes. I also thought that when Sr. died that all the fans for Jr. were band wagon jumpers and I didn't like him because of that. But I read his book called #8 and it was exceptional! I recommend it to all that dislike Jr. It puts him in a whole new light!! My oldest daughter is a Jr. fan so it's pretty interesting here on race days but I support her in liking him and I'm proud she picked a driver that has a backbone and can stand up for himself instead of hiding behind sponsors like Dupont and Lowe's!
Alarm said it right when she said the things about his team and crew and cars. How was Jr. supposed to do better with it? Micheal couldn't do it, why should they have expected Jr. to be able to? Didn't make sense to me then and doesn't now!
You wait and see....Next year Jr. will be in the chase and I'd watch out because he will be hungry and just may take that cup!!
But I'll still be by Tony's side!!!!

P.S.~~And Jr. knows how to drive. It's in his heart and soul!

I love the motorsports, and I've been a Jr. fan since Jr got into Nascar. Even with Dale Sr. still alive. I'm really just a big DEI fan. As Alarm has already said and everyone else, Jr. don't suck. I mean when you have wrecks, mechanical failures, blown tires...etc your gonna wind up loosing or coming in close to the bottom. When you don't have a stable pit crew, that can lead to major looses in Nascar. I honestly believe that no driver is better than the others. It's just how the car, the pit crew, and the driver handle different situations and different tracks. Jr. just had a crappy year, he'll be back next in the chase next year, you wait and see.

As already noted, Jr, is being compared to his Dad, put any driver on the circuit in comparision to his dad, present day or throughout the entire 50 + years of this series. Not many in the same category as Sr. I could go on and on even provide stats from decades past but won't bore you with all of that. Jr's day will come,

Keep it in

Since Racechik invited me over to this thread to take a peek... I have. Now I am going to have to buy an Earnhardt book... just sick thinking about it.. but I will. Alarm, Dale Sr did make Jr work for a living to buy his first stock car.... but it was DEI that brought him into the Busch and Cup series... hence his Dad. Which we all would do mind you. Wont hold that against anyone... parents will do anything they can to help their kid race. But like HighGear said, very few ever succeed as good as their fathers. And Dale Jr is no exception. At age 31, he might at best win one championship... if he has the luck and the breaks. I just dont see it happening.

But I would rather see him drive for someone else. Driving for family is so hard on everyone. Put him in a Childress car... and oh by the way... the cars he is sitting in, they are not bad cars. And no, you're right, Mikey couldnt win in them either... but it isnt the car. Most every car on the circuit can win on a given day. Luck plays a part... but the crew doing pit stops can win or loose a race too... The cream will always rise at the end of the day. These cars undergo such a stringent inspection and those damn templates... over 58 current templates for one freakin car!!! Most every car out there is identical... when you have 43 cars within 1 (ONE) second from 1st to 43rd in qualifying... think about that folks... a blink of an eye... traveling over a mile on some tracks ... to have 43 cars that close. Its not the cars.

Ok.. hearing some creaking... box is getting weak!!! bet Racechik wont ask me to another thread... LOL

Sinjia~ I didn't have to buy the book because I borrowed it from a friend. But it would have pained me too if I would have had to buy it! It truly was a good book and well worth the read!
It talks a lot about his dad too but more important it talks a lot about Jr. going through the Busch Series and coming into the Cup Series and how it affected him and how hard it was being the son of a legend.
You can probably get it at a local library. I have only seen it in paperback but I imagine that it is in hardback too.
It really is worth the time!
Take Care!

O.k.
I am gonna go a little against everyone here....I do think Jr. is a bit over rated. Don't get me wrong, I think he is as good as most of the top drivers that are there right now, but if it weren't for his dad in my oppinion he'd just be another good driver. Maybe of the Bobby Labonte caliber... Budweiser anounced leaving Hendrick Motorsports the year before Jr. went to then Winston cup. Why? Because of his name and being the son of arguably the greatest of all time. So then you had this young kid, with the attitude, and more importantly the name. It was a big win for Bud!
So does Jr. suck? Absolutely not! But I do feel as far as racing, he hasn't earned the reputation he has. No!..... He's a fun guy! A partier! And the son of a legend. You just have to like him!

Totaly agree with you sexymama, I am a Rusty fan here but I still enjoy other drivers and yes even Jr, he just was blessed with having a dad that he had, and I am sure he had his problems just like any of us, but it was the luck of the draw that he got a foot in the door a lot faster than the rest, yes he is having a bad year, like a lot of the others, but we cant give up on them, guess till we walk in there shoes we never really know... but what the heck its fun...no matter what..

I completely agree. Even though Jr is not in the Chase, he is my driver. He is an awesome driver he has just had a bad year and he will be around in the chase next year now that he is back with his cousin Tony Eury Jr. No matter what anyone else says about Jr. he is an awesome driver. He has made a name for himself and he was lucky to have the father he had. His father (DEI) did give him his start in the Busch series but his father made him stay in the Busch series an extra year for the experience before bringing him to the Cup series. Jr and Theresa did the exact same thing to Martin Truex Jr. and they both benefited from it.

Jr. all the way.....

Well....Again, I do like Jr. and I would like to see him win a championship, but at the moment I feel his greatness can only be rated by "popularity". Hopefully he doesn't turn out to be the Dan Marino of Nascar.

Indeed Jr, does have many "bandwagon" fans, so did Kyle in his hayday, as well as Dale Jarret, anyone that ever had the opprotunity to meet his dad in his racing days were automatically a Dale Jarret fan, just because his dad was indeed the gentleman he was highly touted as. I met Ned in 1966 and to this day I remember his charming smile and a nature about him that makes him difficult to dislike, therefore when Dale moved up I was indeed a fan. My fav, no. But indeed wanted to see him do good. It's just the nature of humanity.

Sinjia we must both have overused soap boxes, mine is creaking too

Kind of funny. I remember years ago Dale Sr. telling Jeff Gordon, the kid that he called "Boy Wonder", that if you are getting boo'd that it's a good thing and you're doing something right.
Dale Jr. must not be doing it right yet! LOL!

Jr doesn't need to be boo'd. Fans, car drivers and announcers know that Jr is the face of nascar. Junior has a following and everyone knows he has his own following and he has inherited his fathers fans. Jeff Gordon was boo'd because he was not liked because he was high on himself. Gordon has changed in the last couple of years and he has earned the respect of everyone which is why he is no longer boo'd. Jr is not high on himself and he does not talk in front of the camera's like he is which is what Gordon use to do. Jr is down to earth and he respects the other drivers.

Alarm~ Jeff Gordon was boo'd because he was winning all the time. He came into the sport and instantly got a ride with one of the top organizations. A lot of the old timers felt that he hadn't paid his dues. Not only that but as stated by Rusty Wallace, he had the looks, the girlfriend that became his wife, the good cars and was outclassing some of the guys that had been racing on these same tracks for decades before. The old guys didn't like losing some of the recognition. That trickled down to the fans. Fans were sick of seeing him win all the time and most were saying that he was handed everything on a silver platter. On another note, Jack Roush didn't like him because he thought he had him inked when he moved up to Winston Cup.
As far as Gordon no longer being boo'd.....You haven't been to a race lately or even listened to pre-race introductions have you?
Bottom line.....Jeff just won his 73rd race at Martinsville. He came into cup in 93. Dale Sr. had 76 wins......How many years was that?
Dale Jr. better step it up, if he ever wants to "rightfully" be compared to either one of them!

You know what, you think what you want, and I will think what I want. We can discuss this back and forth and we will both have our arguments. Let's just agree to disagree. I think Jr. is an awesome driver and you don't....... Time will prove that Jr. is the great driver everyone expects him to be.
