| Food dehydrators Posted: 10/16/2005 4:52:02 PM | | Now smitty, I have been meaning to get one maybe make ahi teri strips like I made in Hawaii, but I simply used a box I made with plexi, worked fine. | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 10/16/2005 4:56:27 PM | Dehydration is an incredibly ancient method of preserving food, it FAR predates electricity. You can do it without a modern dehydrator for sure. But I got one free from a friend, so why not use it?
BTW I do not like that nickname.

| Food dehydrators Posted: 10/16/2005 5:07:27 PM | | I really like dried apples. Fruit should be dried until it is leathery--you're not going for crispness when you dehydrate fruit. | |
|
| Food dehydrators Posted: 10/16/2005 5:09:10 PM | | Dried fruit and meat is perfect hiking and camping food--lightweight, and doesn't need refrigeration. | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 10/16/2005 5:14:48 PM | | Don't dehydrate chives or parsley. They just don't survive the process well. | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 5/3/2006 7:26:22 PM | when i dehydrate stuff - can i place it in a ziplock bag to keep or maybe something like tupperware? Any suggestions?
i am going to try apples and then a tofu jerky recipe this week but was not sure how to store it.

| Food dehydrators Posted: 5/3/2006 8:20:27 PM | store jerky in something that air can circulate in or it will give moisture back to the jerky no plastic bags, tupperwear or glass is better or a mason type jar with a screw top lid | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 5/5/2006 1:19:11 PM | Hi. I made the tofu jerky ...
http://www.chairthrower.org/tofujerky/
It is interesting. I thought it would be great for when we go kayaking but it is very salty .... so, I don't know if it would be good for that - but glad I made it!
It reminds me of smoked salmon ... (not lox)
I am going to try to make jerk tofu jerky ....
I am going to try apples next - will let you know how it works out. (Glad to find a use for those mason jars sitting in my closet!)
Interested how the tomatoes turn out for you, I would love to try that - how long can I keep them in the mason jars - I am worried about the humidity here in Florida?
Have a great weekend! Kathleen.

| Food dehydrators Posted: 5/6/2006 5:22:21 PM | | Yes! The first food I ever tasted dried like that was tomatoes and they were amazing!! MUCH better than sundried, sweeter..and of course no perservatives. We ate them like chips..great memory:) | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 5/8/2006 2:41:59 PM | | On "Good Eats" ALton Brown made a great and inexpensive food dehydrator from a window fan and several A/C filters. I believe it is in the Beef Jerky episode. | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 6/30/2006 9:47:04 AM | Hi. I was just at the store today and bought 6 packages of cherry tomotoes for 25 cents each. I put them all in the food dehydrator and I am waiting to see how they come out! Should I add any spices or oil? Andy suggestions? I will let you know the results!
Thanks Kathleen. | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 6/30/2006 4:01:14 PM | I make bunches of deer jerky and some beef. Store like they said in tupperware or jars. plastic bags breath and allow spoilage. Tomato slices are great. Had no luck with bananas like can buy. Doug | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 7/2/2006 7:34:24 AM | HI! I dried out the tomatoes for 2 days. I hope this was long enough ... not 100% sure how long it should be but a few of the smaller ones were getting crackly - so I decided they must be done.
Does anyone know how long they will keep in the mason jars?
I read online that they easily re-absorb the moisture - and now I am worried since I live in Florida and it is so humid here.
I dont want to end of with food poisoning or something!!!!!
I did post a link asking for meatless recipes to help move them along though.
I suppose it defeats the purpose of drying them out if you are stressed over how fast you have to use them! (LOL!)
Also ... this skins have puffed up but the tomato inside is dried .. Should I remove the skins or leave them on?
Thanks Confused New Dehydrator!!!!

| Food dehydrators Posted: 11/20/2007 6:58:05 PM | has anyone had success with fruit leathers? Can one use wax paper? Or should one use saran wrap? What are some of your favourite items dried? | |

| Food dehydrators Posted: 11/20/2007 7:20:55 PM | I use my dehydrator to make beef jerky. I've had several people tell me I should start a business selling it. Yeaaa right all the work involve, I just make it for friends and for chewing on when deer hunting.
As far as plastic bags, Reynolds has a new system out, the zip lock bags have a place for a special vaccum unit to suck out all the air. It makes it pretty air tight and doesn't loose the air tightness. I've done several foods and have even frozen some without them filling up with air. They claim virtually eliminates freezer burn. It's pretty reasonably priced. The bags are $4 for 14 of them and the vaccum is $10 for it. They have 2 different size bags. I found it in the freezer bag section of the local Krogers. I'm impressed with it so far.

| Food dehydrators Posted: 11/20/2007 7:37:24 PM | I make jerky and my own spice mixtures that I enter in my local fair each year. The basis for this is my roasted garlic powder that I dry in the dehyrdrator. | |
