| Avacadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/18/2005 6:13:41 PM | | Not sure what you mean exactly, but I went out Saturday and ordered an avacado half that had Foix Gras in the middle cavity, served on a bed of ceviche (appetizer). I thought it might be foix gras seared with slices on top, but it only had a dab in the middle. Guess that is why it was only $12. | |

| Avacadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/18/2005 6:46:09 PM | | okay, this may sound absolutely gross to you white folks out there. But what you do is...pour some oyster sauce--just a little cuz it's pretty strong--over your avocado and eat it with rice..chinese rice. Don't know what oyster sauce is?? WEll, if you eat a lot of chinese food you should know..it's usually the brown sauce they pour over gai lan--chinese broccoli. Trust me, I'm a cook...it's good stuff. | |

Mix and put on avocado halves, served on a bed of mixed salad greens. It is very good. Give it a try. Best of luck, Nancy

| Avacadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/18/2009 3:32:58 PM | I LOVE avacados on/with just about anything ... omlets ... California rolls ... on whole wheat sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts and maybe thin slices of ham or turkey ... BLT w/avacado of COURSE!
I know it's been overdone but one of my favorite ways is STILL half an avacado on a bed of salad greens ... with a mound of tuna or chicken salad in the middle ... yum ...
I just inherited over a dozen avacados that fell off a tree before they were ripe ... they're shiny with smooth skins and mostly PURPLE ... some black areas and some green areas ... hard as rocks! any suggestions on what these are and how I mite tell when they're ripe?!

| Avacadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/18/2009 4:02:53 PM | | Let's start by spelling it correctly: Avocados. They are delicious stuffed with crabmeat, shrimp salad, or chicken salad. I love to make my own tuna salad: I buy a sushi grade tuna, grill it to mediium rare, cut into bite size chunks, add bite sized chunks of avocado, some red onion and toss with lemon and olive oil dressing. DELICIOUS! | |

| Avacadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/19/2009 9:17:16 AM | Tabbouleh Stuffed Avocado
For the Tabbouleh: 1/2 cup medium-sized bulgar 3/4 cup water 1 heirloom tomato, diced 1 cup curly leaf parsley, chopped juice from 1 1/2 lemons 1/4 red onion, small dice kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
1/2 lemon 2 avocados, halved, pit removed and skin peeled off
Preparation: Add water to a small saucepan over high heat. Bring water to a boil then add a liberal pinch of kosher salt, the juice from 1 lemon, and the bulgar. Stir and reduce heat to low. Simmer over low heat until all liquid has been absorbed. Remove from heat and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
Add cooked bulgar, diced tomato, parsley, and red onion to a mixing bowl. Taste then season with kosher salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and juice from other half of lemon (if a more tart flavor is desired). At this point, tabbouleh can be chilled for up to 24 hours or used immediately.
Squeeze lemon juice over avocado halves to coat. Sprinkle avocados with kosher salt. Fill avocados with tabbouleh and serve.

| Avacadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/19/2009 11:18:28 AM | Molly dear, there in California, having been a resident myself and a member of the California Avocado Board for over 8 years, I know there are more than 135 varieties growing in backyards and throughout the state, so it would be impossible to say which you have, but the likelyhood of a fuerte avocado is pretty high. They are similar to hass. There used to be 25 commercial varieties, which have been scaled down to 7.
To ripen, place the fruit in a plain brown paper bag and store at room temperature 65-75° until ready to eat (usually two to five days). Including an apple or banana in the bag accelerates the process because these fruits give off ethylene gas, a ripening reagent. Soft ripe fruit can be refrigerated until it is eaten, but not for more than two or three days. If you want to keep the fruit longer, let it ripen in the refrigerator, which will be a long slow process, which allows you to keep the fruit longer, 1-3 weeks, depending on how ripe it is when you refrigerate.
Brazilians add avocados to ice cream Filipinos puree avocados with sugar and milk for a dessert drink. Making a shake from them with banana and lime sherbet is about all that will stay on my stomach when taking pain pills or after surgery. Here is a link to a thread here with a lot of good ideas... http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts7250927.aspx

| Avocadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/29/2009 7:02:35 PM | these avocados never did SEEM ripe ... they didn't get soft ... they didn't do any of the "normal" thing avocados do!
I finally decided to try one ... I cut into it and it was perfect! they remained purple with blacker areas ... I put them in the frig at that point and have been eating them like fruit ... fairly plain ... yummy ...
AND they contain the GOOD fat ... the kind we WANT! I'm really grateful to the neighbors who planted all their trees so they hang over my yard and drop fruit into the lawn ...
I specially like the cherry trees! all I have are almonds! well, and thornless blackberries but they're really more tangled shrubs!

| Avocadoes --- looking for something new to stuff them with - help Posted: 10/31/2009 5:49:55 PM | hi^^^^ I am not certain but I remember something about avocados can only ripen once they come off the tree....
stuffing them with a very flavourful lemon couscous might be nice... I have stuffed them with salsa or tomato/basil like for bruchetta... making guacamole, keeping the avo in chunks vs mashing it then returning it to its shell... blessings
