i need to discuss this issue. people get so engauged in the artists lyrics and what the songs tell you what and how to feel. is this important to you, or can music with beautiful sounds and textures give that meaning that you can call your own?

a combo for me.
Lyrics are more prevelant in acoustic style music because you can hear all the friggin words. These artists must have something to say or their gonna flounder in stupidity. Some examples of great stuff
Glen Phillips
Martin Sexton
Elisa Toffoli
The list goes on, but those guys are great
I think Neil Yound and Eddie Vedder(sometimes) do pretty good too

i'm not thinking much on the lines of the classic rock genre, but more towards an ambient electronic style, such as aphex twin's album; selected ambient works untitled track number 3. this album is very atmospheric and gives you a scence of inner fulfillment.

I'm hip...
In that train of thought- there's nothing more emotional than superb melody. Emotional combinations of chords and the ways they are layered can be devastating. Music is awesome

oh...you're so right. i'm very diverse with my music selections, but i know what sucks and what really deserves an ear. i range from classical to very extreme heavy music. bands such as nickle back and creed, i don't agree with how they're going about music making. what do you think about the industry these days? what are we lacking in society to continue to replay songs that we've all heard over and over again from the 1990's?

corporate driven art. It's soooo tough for an indie to survive. You know this, you're a musician ( I think)
It's the same reason we keep seeing remakes of movies that have been made two or three times. Sure bets. It takes a truly remarkable work to start something new. It's a bit old hat, but that's why Kurt Cobain and Radiohead got so much run when they leaped out of the mold. Btw.. did you draw those pics in your bio, zero?? those are awesome good.

That's exactly why Wagner, Beetoven, Liszt, and others didn't require lyrics
People were/are moved by STRIKING and provocative melodies and chords.

I had a friend who was a classical pianist in college. She described two different types of tunings you have when playing piano. One is a standard modern version which we are used to and one is a classical slightly altered version with specific pitches being altered by cents of pitch to create a tearing dissident feel when certain chords are struck.
She exclaimed how much she looooved and urned to play on the classically tuned pianos because of the emotion she got from playing specific lines in Rakmonanov or Bach.
She understood.

The thing i love is sounding lyrics , it is wasy to hear if someone means the lyrics to their song, everyone can read letters , but the emotion of it is harder to read.
Anyone here a muso??

is muso the name of a band??...

Another good lyricist is a new guy named RAy Lamontagne. He's gonna be big (in small circles anyway)

hmmmm....chicken or the egg???
its completely dependent on genre....Bob Dylan...music was weak...hella weak.....punk rock from the begining was notorious for weak music....jazz entirely bassed in music....so its arbitrary to argue this on the level of as a whole....

yes...it is genre that determines if lyrics are appropriate for the music or not. it's just frustrating to me to see all these new artists coming out with totally cheesy lyrics and "the kids" being stunted by all this useless information.

and that is mainly why i'm pretty much backing up "lyric-less" music so much. let your own mind do the interpreting.

It all depends on the music, for instance i listen to rap almost completely for it's lyrical content.

It has to depend on the context. The general public loves crap that is thrown together by some random writer, it seems like that is the kind of song where everyone loves the lyrics more than the music, because everyone has heard the music before. In really good music, if it involves lyrics, they should be part of the music like another instrument not thrown in to make people interested.

I love both...sometimes certain artists are difficult to ignore regardless of how mixed up the music is...case in point, Henry Rollins is a great artist and poet...but his timing is way off...which can be astheticlly unpleasing to those who pay attetnion to sound rather than words.

lyrics without the sound there wouldnt be nothing.. just a guy talking/singing (boring).. but music alone can express every emotion without ever using words..

Sometimes lyrics can ruin the song. Like Napalm Death. Great music, sh*t lyrics/politics.
