anyone take one? What was it like? Was there anything in there that was actually useful or was it mostly preaching?

Well the only thing court ordered here is taking a class about determining a parenting plan which both parents are supposed to take but since she is 1000+ miles away I was the one who had to take it. Basically that was jsut so you developed a fair and equitable parenting plan and knew not to be talking down the other parent. Didn't do much for me but then I am sure it does wonders for others.

The one I had to attend here was worth the $20.00 I paid. It included a standardized video that showed the childrens view of divorce which was based on interviewing real kids. There were handouts and a slide show. Some good info there.

I had to endure one back in '03 when my divorce happened. (my ex refused to go - which was fine by me).

It was nothing but completely wasted time. The class was really, really boring and - frankly - stupid. I was angry because they mandated that the kids go into another room for their own "class" and I didn't know what they were indoctrinating...errr...I mean "teaching" them.

Yeah...because government is who should be teaching people how to be parents?

What a joke.

In the end, I just bit my tongue, spoke condescendingly to the "teacher" (a grad student at a local college who has WAAaayyyyyyy too much faith in government to run our lives) and got her to call on others for the rest of the class while I read a magazine.

OK, I'm off the soapbox now.

Mike: Guess each state is different. For mine, I was told to find a babysitter, because they wouldn't provide daycare for the class. lol How ironic can you possibly get.

I am in Saskatchewan (Canada), they are mandatory here for both parents. It was an 8 hour day, most people did not take it seriously... however, I got a lot of information out of it. Most of it is common sense, but what I found interesting was the different age groups of children and how they view the divorce/separation... it's amazing how true it is. Also, it made me aware of things that my ex does, how I can control my own response to him for the benefit of my children. Good luck.

The one I went to (in Missouri) wasn't any big deal. For good parents it is a lot of common sense stuff, but for those without a lot of common sense I believe it could be very helpful. :) Little Northern Gal is right, it does help you know how to respond in the tough situations when it comes to your ex.

Here in Cali we have to attend a four session class. It is pretty common sense basic stuff telling you to play nice with the ex, otherwise the kids will get thrown in the middle. I would imagine it is good information if you have two parents that are willing to get along for the sake of the children. However, too often the emotions attached to the break up place a road block in front of any constructive co-parenting. Instead parents tend to point fingers and blame...and engage in a lot of of "I'll get you back" behavior. I guess in t a nutshell, the effectiveness of the classes will depend on how well you and your ex are willing to let by gones be by gones.

im doing my second one... but thankfully i dont have to do the anger management course again....

in both consent orders coz the father has a anger problem... and he has openly admitted to not knowing how to care for his son (althought brags and takes credit for all the things i have done with our son).... it was appointed that he does both parenting and anger management course... it was also suggested that i do it too coz if i agreed to do it he would too.. well he didnt do it on the first order... i did both...

it is my choice to do the parenting course again... but im doing the triple P (positive parenting program) manual.. where i can do it at home at my own pace... it hasnt cost me a thing... as if i didnt have my son with me i would have to go to a actual family centre to do it and would cost me $$$$ i dont have and time i dont have as it goes for 2 hour sessions once a week for 8 weeks and done at night....(kinda hard when there is no one to look after ya kid)

It is helping me... as the first time i did this my son was 18months old... now he is 3.5year old.. new issues came up that i didnt have to address back then... it just pretty much has opened my eyes on how i act as a parent if im rewarding my son for behaviour (which i never have).. it helps you see things from a different view... ways the child might be able to understand a little better... and it makes you understand kids alot better... its not them the kids we have to adjust it is our way as parents how we think a situation should be and how we can adjust ourselves to get the best response from our kids
