| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 2:21:28 PM | | I herniated a disk so I am feeling the pain right now myself. Use heat if when you touch your back it isn't warm. If it is, then use ice (less comfortable but it works just as well). Find some stretches on the internet (it's hard to explain without demonstrating) and sleep at night with your knees elevated to take the pressure of your back. Use good posture, ice or heat several times (15-20 minutes on then keep off until skin is no longer cold or hot depending on which one you use and then re-apply as often as possible). If you work at a desk, try getting up and walking around, stretch and ice or heat while at work. I use muscle relaxants but if you want to avoid that, then rely on heat, massage, chiropractic care, stretch in the shower or take baths to alleviate the pain temporarily. Also topical pain relievers mask the pain for a little bit. Hope that helps. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 2:33:29 PM | I've been dealing with killer muscle spasms and strains for the past couple weeks. I've gone to the hospital three times and the doctor once. I've gotten four different opinions on what to do, so I'm sticking with the similarities. I went in for a massage yesterday. It didn't clear it up, but it took a lot of the edge off. I'm going back on Friday for another one. I'm currently sitting at the computer with a vibrating brace around my neck. I'll be moving it down when I finish this message. The heat blanket is alright. The part about 15 minutes is good...I've been told 15 minutes, then an hour break, then 15 minutes again. Please let me know if you find anything that helps. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 2:38:05 PM | | I've got two blown discs in my neck and two in the lower back. From a 1992 car accident, had surgery in '95.The only thing I take now for pain is Midol.Best OTC on the market.I use a rub called Biofreeze when it gets really naggy.I take alot of hot baths and I work out in the gym every day.I think exercise keeps you one step ahead of chronic pain.My only vice is weed,I don't really like alcohol and I say a definite no to Rx painkillers.Been there, done that,No thank you. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 3:14:46 PM | | I do heavy lifting at my job and pulled muscles in my back and tried all the pain meds and that never worked, until I tried a rub called tiger balm extra strength. It kinda burns when first put on and smells pretty bad, but it helped a lot. Within an hour of trying it, my back felt a lot better. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 5:13:21 PM | | might check out some accupuncture or accupressure along with alternating heat and cold | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 5:16:18 PM | Practice 'postural sitting/standing' at least once every day for the rest of your life. Your back can't feel good unless you keep it long and in proper alignment. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 5:45:17 PM | | I don't know what kind of operation you are having but I sure would consider a lot of alternatives. Back pain can come from many things. Excercise and strengthening the muscles of the torso as well as the whole body is a good start a lot of the time. 20 minutes of aerobic excercise sets of endorphins in your body. They are called this because they act like morphine. Some ppl are low in seritonin thus causing pain to be more acute. There are supplements at the health food store that can help mask your pain. Good thing bad thing because pain usually happens for a reason. Our body trying to tell us something. 3 Omega oils are also used as a natural anti-imflammatory. Water intake is high on my priority list. These are a few things to research and study about. I studied pain for a couple of years and these things were good to know. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 6:53:07 PM | I just have scoliosis, but have dealt with it for 34 years. I take 800 mg Ibuprofen and Flexerill but message and chiropractic help if you can afford it. Yoga is great too, if you can make yourself go. And a great sex life really helps! Best Wishes. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/26/2005 8:39:51 PM | | The main thing with major back pain, especially if your preparing for surgery is to begin stretching your body, which will help reduce some of the pain. If you feel really tight and are in pain definitely get a heating pad and use that for about 20 min., because this loosens your muscles and relieves that tight feeling. A few stretching exercises that you can perform I will describe in detail for you so you can try and you will more than likely have to do some of these as part of your rehab. The hip-flexor stretch- step into the lunge position with your right foot leg forward. Reach over your head with your left hand, then bend at your waist to your right side. Reach back with your right hand and twist to your right side. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Switch sides and repeat. Do 3-4 times on each side and 6-8 times per day. A website that you can find some other good stretches is menshealth.com/back and it will give full descriptions and pictures you can try. I am about to be certified as an athletic trainer and I have performed these stretches on college and h.s. athletes and they do help relieve pain. If you have any questions just let me know. Hope it helps! | |

| back pain Posted: 10/27/2005 1:16:40 AM | Please consider alternatives to surgery if you haven't already done so.
Twenty-five years ago, I was on painkillers and a candidate for surgery (disc) and found an alternative healer who recommended a series of exercises to strengthen my abdominal muscles. In two weeks my problem was under control!!!
I continue these abdominal strengthening exercises to this day, and my back is fine. | |

| back pain Posted: 10/27/2005 11:26:06 AM | missbad, This can't be part of the problem since it's been two years - but I've known someone who's spine was leaking after having something similar to an epidural. He had stroke like symptoms (age 35). They were looking for menengitis and took fluid out of his spine to study it. Anyway, the leaking caused pain and severe headaches for months until one doctor did a "blood patch". They took some of his blood and put it into his spinal column. It located the leak and sealed it. He was fine after that.
The spinal column is so fragile and easy to screw up if things are not done right. Please be sure you are confident in your surgeon. It doesn't hurt to ask for references, other patients who have had this surgery.
My late husband was 1) shot 5 x's in the back in Vietnam (but they were stopped by a radio - he still felt the hits), then 2) a helicopter crashed and he was in traction in Saigon. Then he 3) fell from a telephone pole in his mid 20's. Had a back surgery, they messed something up, so he had a second. He was in his late 30's then. Then at age 48 he 4) got hit by a car, so had 2 more surgeries.
He was on pain meds most of his life and those can be addicting.
Be very careful!! | |

| back pain Posted: 10/27/2005 9:42:06 PM | Yeah, I hope he can stay off the pain meds... I had a doctor who gave them to me very freely about 6 years ago.. I honestly didn't know how addicting they could be. I've never gone through such he#* in my life... I'm talking the worst things you could imagine.... ((I'll admit, I've done my share of "other" drugs)), but I've never been physically addicted to something like that... My god... My dentist, last year, tried to give them to me... NO WAY~~~ I never want to go through anything like that again... I honestly believed it was mostly psychological, until I went through it.
I quit everything they had me on, including ibuprofen, a muscle relaxant, and the Vicodin... And started doing mild exercises, physical therapy and super hot baths as many times a day as I needed them... ((moist heat works better than anything for me))...
Okay, I'm rambling... My whole point is that once I went off all the drugs, I felt better... There's a phenomenon called rebound pain... And when you take meds daily for a long time, it makes your body crave more and more, and your pain seems worse than it ever did to start with.....
Just a thought... | |

| back pain Posted: 10/28/2005 7:08:46 AM | | I herniated a disc 7 years ago in my neck...the best route for me was surgery. I haven't had any problems since. My surgeon is a genius. Everyone is not as fortunate as I am. The cervical area has such a higher success rate with surgery....lumbar is a totally different ballgame. | |
|
| back pain Posted: 10/28/2005 8:13:55 AM | | I was lucky to find out it was the job I was doing in addition to working about 70 hours a week... Once I quit the job and did something with more "normal" hours, and kept up the back exercises and moist heat, I've rarely had a problem since... Have some mild degenerative disease in my lower back, but I was told that's fairly common. I'm glad you found something that worked so well for you... I'll never go the med route again.... Not even ibuprofen~~ | |

| back pain Posted: 10/28/2005 1:23:37 PM | I messed up 4 disks in my back from a car accident and for the spasms I get my chiro guy suggested I try Schuessler Salt which sorta seems to work and I also use a tens machine. There is a treatment for some injuries and chronic pain called Prolotherapy/Sclerotherapy but they won't use this on my injury because of the number of disks involved. Lucky for me thou I live in denial so the pain aint really there...

| back pain Posted: 10/28/2005 4:27:38 PM | hey missbad, i can give you my advice & what's worked for me. i have had 2 major back injuries & the best things i found for lower back was doing stretches that focused on my hip & lower back joints as well as an awsome dvd from gaima called amyoga. it's a really gentle yoga & a lot of it's done laying on your back or doing slow motions. also i found stretching over a exercise ball (stomach down) really helpful. i hope that helps, cheers | |
