| | Are you a Good Northener or a Snobby Southener ?Page 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | The north/south divide. Myself, i'm a Midlander...i.e. Stoke and Worcester,...but to Southeners, Midlanders dont exist.
What have been your experiences of the north/south divide ? Do you think people still have set mis-conceptions as to what you are like due to which part of this tiny island you come from ?

Posted: 11/1/2005 1:49:11 PM | | I cant help but notice that as a midlander ( a northener to a southener) that people in the south think , i should really have a whippet/flat cap/vote labour...etc... Somehow, people in the South always think they're more superior to those who come from north of Watford Gap.

| Are you a Good Northener or a Snobby Southener ? Posted: 11/1/2005 2:18:36 PM | Ummmm Not at all sure what you're on about..But me I'm down here in Devon so pretty south of the country....I don't have a problem with people from way up north or way down here in the south...What I do find is that maybe different parts of the country are busier than others..For example...I worked many years for an overnight courier...a very large franchise. I had the best banter with nearly all the depots...except the who covered the likes of Heathrow and the inner London depot..However this wasn't because these guys were snobby, it was because they were just soooo damned busy and just didn't have the time to waste chatting... How about the generalisations made about the likes of me from the westcountry...how we all drive tractors, are slow, and have a silly accent...Thinking of the Ambrosia adverts now...very very patronising! So I don't have any misconceptions..having worked driving all over the country...We are pretty much all the same just some of us have a different accent.... | |

| Are you a Good Northener or a Snobby Southener ? Posted: 11/1/2005 3:48:30 PM | The question in itself leans towards an attitude of shallow regionalism.
I am of the opinion it is a lack of understanding and misinformation that fuels such simplistic commentary. The northern man has been historically proud of his achievements in industry, his resilience in the face of economic depression, and in modern times his new found ability to cope with change as the last half of the last century brought forth the demise of the traditional industries associated with the north. The southern man is equally as proud of his historic prowess, the maritime legacies, the tin and kaolin mines, and lets not forget the blitz and Dunkirk. As a southern man I do not see myself as 'snobby' for I respect and hold proud the historic imput af all men (and women to complete a collective) in all areas of my country. The very thought of labelling anyone simply as a result of their geographical placement is something I would hope I would never be so ignorant to do.

I've lived in Staffs/Worcestershire/Wales/Cornwall/Dorset .... yet i feel the southern (east) of this country totally ignorant of life beyond the bounds of the south east and still today stuck in a stereotypical / satire resonance of life in britain beyond its borders.
