| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/16/2004 3:42:34 PM | | I smoke outside or out or hanging out my patio slider in my bedroom when it's cold. I refuse to subject my son (or any child ) to my nasty habit. People who actually smoke in their homes (or in the car) really get under my skin when they have children. It is very selfish. | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/16/2004 5:20:15 PM | smoking around children really really bugs me. We all know these days what it does to innocent bystanders & I think iit is so incredibly rude of adults to smoke around children! I knwo of some people who think that if they open the car window a litt,e it's ok to smike with their child in the car & it bothers me so much! Or the people sho feel they should be able to somke in their own house even around little ones. I think that's fine around adults who can walk out of the room or leave, but children don't have that option! | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/17/2004 10:44:53 AM | | i don't think it's right to smoke around kids. my son went to a babysitter for almost 2 years (starting at 9 months old) where both people in the house were chain smokers. (they were my parents) he had re-occuring ear infections and one day the doctor asked me if anyone in the household smoked. it was so bad that walking into their house was sometimes like walking into a cloud of smoke. i was always on their case about it. well they have both recently quit smoking, but my son doesn't go there anymore. | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/20/2004 3:54:43 PM | I don't smoke around kids either. I even stopped smoking in my own house when I had a girlfriend and her 3 little ones living with me. I went outside and smoked and found that I cut down to less than a pack a day.
Now if only someone would come up with a pill that kills the niccotine addiction.

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/20/2004 7:27:22 PM | Ok at the risk of getting frowned at , sounds like we are all trained these days to be politically correct. Main stream says second hand smoke is bad and have even said its worse than if your the smoker. I do smoke but I dont smoke around my kids, simply becuz they say it stinks not (and yas gonna think Im wrong and thats ok) becuz I have been told it will hurt them. As a smoker I respect anyones wishes whether to smoke around them or not. I actually did a term paper on this last semester whether second hand smoke is more harmful than every day living. What Ive found is food any kind is altered for profit and no solid evidence has show if its good or bad since it hasnt been done long enough. We assume the FDA says its ok so it must be (never mind that big business sways there thoughts). Eggs and milk was bad for us at one time but now there not. How about all the radiation we are bombarded with every day? Cell phones signals, dish signals and all other signals need alot of power to get from here to space and back again what do you think pushs the signals? Cell phones are suppose to cause tumors, yet kids have em. How about that car you drive? No fumes? Better yet how about those semi trucks their evidence is plaster right next to the exhaust pipes. My conclusion was I have alot more to worry about killing me than cigarettes or second hand smoke. I dont smoke around non smokers or kids simply becuz to me its a nasty habit and smells. | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/22/2004 3:58:31 PM | I smoke socially. Meaning, if I go out with someone who smokes then I'll get a cigarette off them. I don't buy packs, normally, because I tend to find myself wanting to smoke more. I'm one of those people who can have four cigarettes without getting addicted, so long as I don't have them readily available.
Now, when I am say standing at the bus stop and a mother approaches with her children, it doesnt matter if I've just lit the cigarette, I put it out immediately. I don't agree, nor do I condone smoking around kids. Adults have choices, they can leave the area or ask the smoker to put the cigarette out. Children can't. Normally they have no choice in what they're subjected to.
Also, I don't smoke around the elderly unless they are smoking. They're already in enough fragile condition as it is.
Cheers, LadyO~ | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/23/2004 9:11:25 AM | | I don't smoke at all, and I do not allow smoking around my kids. My ex husband smoked and he would go outside to do it, but my youngest daughter kept getting ear infections, pneumonia, and asthmatic bronchitis. The doctor asked if anyone smoked in the home and when I replied my husband smoked but he did it outside, the doctor said he was carrying it back inside with him. I kind of thought that was bull, if you see where I am coming from, but when my husband and I separated, she got better. She has had no more ear infections, and no more episodes of pneumonia, bronchitis, or anything like that. So, I guess the Doctor was right. So, I don't allow it around my kids at all! | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/23/2004 7:04:50 PM | | I smoke, but never in my house, car, or anywhere near my kids. I think the cough I have every morning is enough to proof to me that second hand smoke is bad for kids, or anyone for that matter. I am so discreet about my smoking, my ex didn't even know I still smoked. But these people who want to ban it all together and keep raising the taxes should be shot. I have this one vice, and I want to be left alone about it. I don't need to be told "those things will kill you." I know and don't care. Cars kill people all the time, but I still drive. There's a town in Maryland where you can be fined for smoking in your car with the window down. That's just rediculous. America is supposed to be a place of freedom, but it's turning into a place where you are only free as long as you don't offend anyone. And non smoking bars, GREAT IDEA. Just not all of them in a town. Give the nonsmokers their place, don't make it a law. Like Boulder, CO. No smoking in any bars. Nothin goes better with whisky than a smoke. | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 12/24/2004 5:45:22 PM | no offense Casper, but your term paper is full of crap. Comparing smoking to "everyday life" is ridiculous. Yes all the things you mentioned do harm to people...no argument. But your flaw (if this was done as an experiment) is in your variables. In order to actually compare smoking to "everyday life", you would have to remove the smoker from all the other effects of everyday life. In other words, if the only negative , or potentially harmful thing you were exposed to was smoke, would it be as harmful as the effects of everyday life.
fact is, smokers and non-smokers are not only exposed to smoke, but all the other things you mentioned as well. Saying that you are not worried about the effects of smoke on the health of you or your poor children is like saying to them "go ahead into that ocean...don't worry about the sharks...you'll never survive the undertow". Or maybe even " expose yourself to everything, something will kill you anyways."
Just wanted to add one more thing. I'm a respiratory therapist. I treat people with respiratory problems everyday. I really dont care if you or others smoke...its job security for me!!! But in some places they are trying to have smoking in the presence of children listed as a form of child abuse and a serious consideration in determining custody, and I hope they succeed.
smoking is disgusting and as far as i'm concerned a ridiculous habit> it is government and big business controlling and manipulating a weak-minded public into kiiling themselves and paying triple for it. first you buy the cigarette which is taxed and cash earned by the government. the tobacco companies also pay the government huge amounts to control law (also from revenue from your pack of smokes). Then thirdly the health care costsare huge and alos largely funded by you.
I apologize for the rant...caught me on a bad day....man ,I need a smoke...kidding.

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 5/11/2005 12:14:28 PM | I am one with an extermist view on this, I think smoking should be illegal. It does nothing but harm everyone and the enviroment.
Other thing we should do is tax smokers for all the extra health care costs related to smokers.

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 5/11/2005 8:55:28 PM | I can't stand it when mothers are holding their baby with one hand and smoking with the other. One day I was at the tattoo shop and as the tattoo artist was working on me another client went out side and was holding her baby and smoking. He told another guy to yell at her. The guy went out there and started telling her how disgusting that was and if she wanted a tattoo in his shop she'd either put out the cigarrette or put down the baby. She put it out, but I thought that was pretty cool. | |

| smoking around kids.... Posted: 5/11/2005 11:15:27 PM | I think you shouldn't smoke around anyone (adult or child) who wouldn't feel comfortable with exposure. The polite thing to do in the case of an adult is ask "is it ok if I ... " ... just because you smokers have little regard for your health doesn't mean we have to pay the consequences as well. However if you are smoking socially, then all in the viscinity clearly don't mind the smoke and so it is fair game.
With kids not only are the long term effects frightening but also as I have seen first hand, often they grow up to be smokers as well. That is in the case of parents smoking in front of their children.
