| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/11/2005 7:16:10 AM | Hi there. I gave up 3 weeks ago. Felt really bad at nights. Even to the point of anxiety attacks. Anyway I went to my Dr and he gave me some very mild sleeping pills to get me through. Made a big difference for the first 5 nights or so. There is a very good book which might help. Allen Carr is the author and the book title is Easy way to stop smoking. However don't take up smoking to quit again according to his book. Please remember you have had a drug addiction and nicotine is a nasty addiction to have. Don't let it beat you.
I got mad at spending so much money, wasting so much time daily lighting up and rolling smokes. Now I am on the getting even side of things. Gaining my health back. Eating Tic Tacs. I have smoked off and on since I was 12. I did have a really awful day about 7 days ago. Major melt down, cried at the drop of a hat. Hated the world, and anyone in it. Feel so much better now. All the withdrawal cravings are temporary, They last for how much time each time? Don't look past the next hour, then the next and so on. Cure the problem in stages. It is a lot easier. Go see the Dr and tell the Doc you have given up gold turkey and you are having bad withdrawals. He amy well give you something that is not nicotine based to ehlp you sleep at the very least. You have 4 days victory under your belt! Try to make it 5 then 6 and so on. Good luck. I will keep watching with interest and post more if needed.

i've heard it can take up to two weeks to rid oneself of the addiction process; be kind to yourselves in the interim, treat yourself to a spa treatment if you can? do whatever makes you feel good, inside and out during this time... seeking the advice of your doc might be a great idea if it becomes a bit overwhelming. one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time if need be; you've already done the hardest work, making the decision and sticking to it! many here are rooting for your complete victory! when ya feel the urge, do something, anything with your hands, mouth, body. i say whatever feels good. eat crunchy veggies, apple slices, celery, whatever you like that's healthy. i've set a target date for myself to do so, too, i'm the weaner kind of personality in this regard. i shudder to think of the cold turkey symptomology if i were to attempt that now; life is a bit in flux right now so i'd likely make some choices i'd rather not and so prefer to tackle it a bit at a time. best of all to deciding to the the right and healthy thing for yourselves and loved ones! and, ask for all the hugs you need right now! you've taken on one of the healthiest things you could ever do in your life by quitting! that's amazing in itself! YOU are both amazing! anyone having quit knows how difficult this can be. i trust many other better and more knowledgable posts are forthcoming! keep up your great will, you CAN do this, you ARE doing this...

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/12/2005 3:31:09 AM | You will never last with this method. You are likely weak willed and will cave any day now. However, I do have a suggestion on how you can quit for good. It won't take any longer than say a half hour. My cousin used this method to quit many years ago and hasn't smoked since.
You will require a full package of ciggerettes...maybe 2 packs to be on the safe side. Go in the washroom...and eat the entire pack. Swallow it. As much as you want to hold the puke down, don't. Vomit away. Make sure you chew ever ciggerette and swallow it. I'm serious. You should puke many times from this. Don't stop. Keep plugging away until you have ate ever last ciggerette and it comes back up.
What do you accomplish with this? Well before you likely were condioned to associate ciggerettes with:
Ciggerettes = pleasure, relaxation
after this method
Ciggerettes = vomit, dry heaves, more vomit, pain in general
You are probably hesistant to want to put yourself through all that. But really, it's not gonna take that long to do this. Half hour tops. You will condition yourself to think of smoking as a non-smoker does.....gross...vile...disgusting.
My cousin went to go light up maybe a week after doing this method...and as soon as she took a puff...she went running to the washroom to throw up
So quit following around with this wishy washy willpower nonsense. Quit like you want to quit. Trick your body into hating this crap.
The End
PS You're welcome | |

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/13/2005 10:26:01 PM | Hi Kat, I quit 5 yrs ago, after 20 yrs of smoking. My daughter was diagnosed asthmatic, so I decided to quit. I went the Zyban route, but also used the Zyban plan. It involves removing smoking behaviors from all areas in your life that it was once related. Eg. I used to smoke in my room, fixing my hair and make-up every morning. I changed doing my hair and make-up to the bathroom, until the cravings to light up there were gone. Then I went back. I bleached all my walls, then didn't smoke in there. I eliminated a room per day, cleaning it as I went, until the only place I smoked was outside. Gave myself till the end of that week and did it, eliminating the last place I smoked. Removing the behaviors, or changing the routine associated with smoking helped me immensely!! I was 1 1/2 pack per day smoker. (Canadian, that's almost 40 smokes per day) Take Care, Good Luck and I'll be routing for ya!! Cutiegal | |

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/14/2005 12:54:19 AM | Congratulations on quitting smoking, you will feel so much better, and you will be amazed at how much better food starts tasting as they come back to you. I quit almost 5 years ago. Cold turkey, just like you. My reasons....not important here, this is about you , point is, it can be done, and with the support of everyone here, your family and friends, you will make it through it.
Smoking is an oral fixation, when you quit, you need to keep your mouth and your hands busy ( thats why they say chew gum, keeps your mouth busy ) Everytime you get an urge to smoke, pop in a piece of gum. Mind you, this will not curb your nicotine cravings, they will subside on their own eventually, you just have to ride it out. You can try nicotine gum, but, BUT, you are not really quitting, you are quitting the nicotine from the cigarette, and getting it from the gum instead, 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other. The Nicotine gum is great to wean you off of the cigarrettes, as you can gradually cut back your pieces of gum, ie weaning off of the cigarette to 2-3 pieces of gum to 2 pieces - 1 ...to nil...whatever the case. But if you have gone cold turkey, avoid it. Just use regular gum, geep a pack off sugar free with you ( sugar free as you will be chewing alot, will not affect your teeth as much ) of course this is just advice, i am not a doctor, I just play one on TV.....sorry always wanted to say that.
The way i quit, along with gum, I carried around a water bottle with a squirt top. Whenever I got the craving, i sucked on the water bottle....(drank alot of water, just kept refilling it )
Nicotine acts as somewhat of an appetite suppressant, once you quit smoking, after about the 3rd, 4th week, maybe longer, you will get your sense of smell back, and best of all, your appetite. Pick a food that is healthy for you, that whenever you get a craving for food, that is what you stuff yourself with, something like melba toast, or smart food popcorn. Me.......................big mistake................................pizza.............chocolate oreo ice cream. I was working nights at the time, so I face the double whammy of eating when I got home. But the pizzaa, did me in. I cut back to a tub of haagen daas every night, i got better...lol. I put on 27 pounds , i have since taken it off, but, it was a chore. Nonetheless , this is not about me, sorry
in conclusion, this worked for me
-drink lots of water ( carry a bottle with you ) -do not eat late at night , if you do, drink water with whatever you are eating -whenever you get the craving, chew gum, drink water ( with a sucky top facilitating -something in your mouth, kinda curbs the fixation ) - eat healthy -be happy - most importantly, give hugs
good luck, you will do great, everyone is rooting for you

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/14/2005 1:38:37 AM | The patch works well. I quit for a month awhile back on the patch. Got off it, still craved and thought screw this, I'm just going to smoke instead of be miserable. I didn't know you would still crave months after quiting. But anyway, it is helpful, but do NOT smoke with the patch.
Oh, one more thing. Cigars helped me get thru craving too. Good luck with it.

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/15/2005 10:58:12 AM | | ok, well good luck, hope you dont go back to smoking, I stopped 3 yrs ago, heres some tips, you may find that you dont know what to do with your hands, find something else to do with them, anything, learn to play something, write a novel, chores, anything, when you feel the urge, eat fruit, instead, and when you you cant stop thinking of having a ciggie, think about all the possible ailments connected with smoking, treat yourself to something special, every day that you get through, avoid going to places that people will be smoking, take my word for it, its difficult now, it will get easier, as your body gets used to not having the nicotine, each and every day, will get easier, and one day you will, wonder, why you didnt stop sooner, give your lungs a well deserved break, you can do it and you will do it, if you really want to, just make sure that you hate smoking, for all its worth, and promise yourself, to stop, soon you will feel a lot happier, healthier, fitter, more attractive, and be proud to say, I quit smoking, months ago, and i feel great, much love and good luck, hope ive helped in some way. | |

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/15/2005 1:37:53 PM | Hey!
And congrats! I'd take you out to celebrate if I knew where you were. :)
Stopping cold turkey is really hard to do..your body expects to have that nicotine it now depends on. It is normally not recommended to to stop cold turkey because it kind of catches your body by surprise. One thing that helps keep your mind off this thing, is nicotine gum which i heard helps. Also, keep busy, do things out of routine. A tough spot is when we have a 'cigarette break', or smoking after this or that..its habit forming, so when you do your routine now you feel like your missing something. So do some things differently..like..walk home a different way, read, do things to keep busy. Its going to be hard, for how long ? I dont know..but I recommend going to your doctor to get good ideas :)
again congrats! and even tho I dont know ya, I'm proud of ya! :)

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/15/2005 4:06:10 PM | CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have started on the road to regaining your life. You must understand that your desire for a smoke will never go away, but the cravings you have will not get any worse than they have been already. Having a smoke will not stop the cravings that you are having, just like when you did smoke, you will want another smoke with in hours. So don't even have one. One little smoke will undo all those days of not smoking and you will have to start at the begining again. You know, hour one, hour two, day one, day two and so on. Stay out of the places that trigger your desire for a smoke. Change your daily routines, from what they were. Give your self a treat with the money you are saving. I am on week four, and will not ever smoke again. I am using the gum, and have found it to be very effective at reducing the cravings. The best part is that after a meal instead of lighting up I have a piece of gum and its fills the need. Remember that if you smoke, it will kill you, no if ands or buts. I have been a heavy smoker for about thirty years, 25 to 40 smokes a day. Good Luck God Bless Jacque | |

| I just quit smoking 4 days ago .......Any tips/advice? Posted: 11/20/2005 9:58:47 PM | I congratulate you on something very very hard to deal with. I quit smoking almost a year ago...cold turkey...no patches, eating a pack of cigarettes etc. Not everyone is the same as far as dealing with the proverbial monkey on your back. But it can be beat, I stopped three times before I got to this level. One of the problems I had was going to bars and night clubs, in that enviroment you can have a lit cigarette in your hand before you realize it. I takes a lot of intestial fortitude, it is nicotine which is addicting, and to be honest, I find moments where I want to light up. But that is where the inner strength comes in. Pick up a book, grab a glass of water, just do anything to get your mind off of the craving. Think of a far away place you would like to visit, sailing on an ocean. Write down what your thoughts are..and go back a few weeks later and read them. I am with you 100%..good luck and realize you can do it. | |
