Don't be scared of lots of Protein, it will help you lose weight too!

Thanks to high-protein diets for weight loss, there has been an explosion of interest in protein. No longer are people looking at carbohydrate for shedding weight, or low fat diets for trimming our thighs; protein has the spotlight.

this is an old thread but i feel the importance of keeping it up to date.

yes protein is your friend and you should eat it at least every 3 hours. without a steady supply of protein your muscles will go hungry and may start breaking down themself just to supply the necessary fuel to get you through your day, and when that happens your metabolism drops and it becomes so much easier for you to get fat because muscle burns calories 24 hours a day and the more you have of it the more control that anyone has on what they look like.

you can control the shape of your body with muscle, fat just sits there looking like shit.

Everybody's metabolism is different.... people who tend to normally carry a little weight and have trouble losing weight tend to do better with lower processed carb diets...

Eventhough Atkins was kind of extreme with his protien (although the eat any thing you want was only for the first 14 days of his plan) what he was right on target with... and preached long before mainstream nutritionists came around was that processed carbs were bad for you...

So eating healthy potein (chicken fish) some good carbs(most veggies, some kinds of fruit, legumes) and some good fats (olive oil) is healthly choice for most people...

Besides that... lots of water, cut caffiene, artificial sweeteners, reduce alcohol...

My absolute favorite now ... thanks to JP ... is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard (Vanilla Ice Cream-yummy) 24 g. protein. I mix it with my AM orange juice, no after taste or lumps, and it's "instantized" so it mixes smoothly & easily.

I love protien.....Protien also helps you keep your muscles while you shed pounds...you still require carbs... however no white products... orange juice is a product that can raise your insuline levels... your better off to eat a orange and have your shake with water..
Or use half orange juice and water in that.
In canada protien isolates are very popular with many men and women...fills you up when in a hurry and will help you burn that fat.
More and more trainers are understanding the value of suppliments and are teaching thier clients the importance of it.
My favorite thing at supper is a salad with either chicken or fish...if I am lazy a shake.
I try to eat every 3 hours...my body actually is always my natural clock..I can tell time by my stomache ...lol
This is a great forum...I find so many women and men seek fat burners... and quick fixes for weightloss. Protien and lotsa veggies and the right omeaga oils, some carbs is perfect..

protien should be
1 gram of protien per pound of body weight divide by at least 4 to 6 small meals..as you loose weight you can adjust the amount of protien per serving.
eg. you weigh 200 you need 200 grams by 5 meals equals 40 gram a serving...
most cans of tuna 15 to 20 grams don't overdue the tins...

Just to interject...it's 1 gram of protein for every Kilo of body weight. Divide weight by 2.2. And that's on the high side! If you're eating 1 gram protein / 1 pound weight, you are taking in way too much protein!!!

And for the record, I still don not believe "protein diets" have any advantage for the lay person...infact I believe they do more harm than anything.

So why is a man (veedub) on here telling women how to lose weight? It's so sad that people cannot learn to accept themselves and others for who they are, rather than based on an arbitary and unrealistic set of expectations such as those regarding women's body weight. Sure, I believe all women want to look and feel their best, but there is far more to consider, such as how women's body weight is used as a form of social control; kept physically and emotionally hungry, women's attention is diverted away from more important political issues. It is far more attractive to be emotionally, spiritually, and physically healthy than to try and fit someone else's ideologies.

I found veedub's profile far too long to read (sorry, but like all men I have a relatively short attention span), so maybe I missed the part about his being a registered dietitian or having other qualifications to give women advice on body weight and dieting.

since in your profile you claim to be university educated in regards to womans nutrition ( a field you most likely got into to help get over your shyness with woman)why don't you put this thread to an end and just tell us everything there is to know.

Personally, I don't care if it is men or women who post answers to help people -- this is a health forum, sort of gender-neutral. If you have a doctor of the other gender, do you dismiss their advise also? I don't think we need to be that hung up on spelling either--we all make mistakes (esp. on these machines)...it's more annoying when a poster uses text-msg shortcuts. It certainly doesn't take from their advice. As we all know, the school of life teaches us much more than "book smarts". I value several regular posters on this forum for their wealth of knowledge about these subjects...I don't care what their formal education is. Thanks for clearing up the kilo/pounds on protein levels. I think it is important for everyone to remember that this site is occupied by both sides of the "pond".

I've been on a diet for the past 3 weeks. I eat just 1 serving of the food i'm eating, counting calories, and I'm adding a little more protein than what I usually eat. But I'm eating lots of veggies, and 3 servings of dairy a day. So far, I've lost 12 pounds in 3 weeks! So the key to success (for me anyways) Is eating just 1 serving, protein, dairy, and veggies. And of course, exercising! I exercise 7 days a week, for 30 minutes. I don't do more than that because I have bad back problems (7 surgeries) so i don't want to cause more harm than i already have!

But good luck to everyone that's dieting. :D

protein is the building block of muscle, plain and simple. You want to gain muscle, lean up and shed those extra lbs? Then protein is essential. In fact 1-1.5 gr of protein per body weight is ideal. If you weigh 130lbs X 1 = 130 this means that you should be taking in 130gr of protein per day. Now you divide 130/ 5 or 6 –meals per day- and you get your protein intake per meal. Ex. 130/6= 21.5 gr of protein per meal. Of course you need those good carbs –green veggies, brown rice etc and good fats –olive oil, flax seed oil – to make an optimal meal. Protein shakes coupled with the meals, weight training and intense cardio -30- 1hour- will get you into insane shape. Remember, eating the right foods split up into 6 meals will not get you fat. The contrary, it will speed up your metabolism which in turn will increase your bodies temp and burn off those calories, keeping you nice and lean.

Men too.

As a gastric bypass patient, we are instructed to take in 80 to 120 grams of protein per day. When I want to bump up my wieght loss because it slows or stops, or if I want to keep any more from coming on, I add 30 grams a day. Yes, the protein helps with the weight loss.

I'm losing weight and I didn't know protein would help lose weight....new to all of this...I've been a bigger girl all my life so losing weight and working out are all still new to me....I've heard the guys at work talking about protein shakes I thought that was just for muscle mass...you know like body builder type and was pretty scared of it cuz honestly I just want an hourglass figure for the most part. how much protien do you need a day?

Protein is primarily for tissue maintenance (muscles and the like)...as an energy source it stinks. There is nothing special about it that will assist in body fat reduction, as far as a dietary input is concerned. It is important that you consume enough to maintain (or even slightly gain) muscle mass. Loss of muscle mass while on a diet program has a paradoxical effect...your weight goes down, but so does the amount of calories it takes to move you around. This yields in an eventual increase in body fat.

The proper amount of protein is 1 gram for every kilo in weight...either divide your weight by 2.2 or figure 1 gram of protein for every 2 pounds of weight. Too much protein leads to ammonia toxicity and / or even ketosis...and that is not a good thing.

While there are people who swear by the high protein diets...they are missing the true cause of their weight loss. Remember...the only way to lose fat is by a calorie deficit...how you achieve that is up to you. It is a good idea to avoid simple sugars and highly processed foods, spread your meals out, eating before bed is fine, eat breakfast, take a multi vitamin, and count your calories.

Caloric defecit is indeed required for weight loss, but you will lose the weight in all the wrong places if you do not get required nutrients. Protein is one of them if you are weight training. Muscles need to rebuild, they need fuel to rebuild, empty caloric foods will not rebuild them properly.

What happens is someone who takes low calories and exersizes who is pear shaped becomes a smaller pear. If you want to transform your body into a lean healthy body protein is required. It's just that simple. High protein and low everything else is bad for you, but high protein and staying low on your calories along with a healthy amount of vitamins and minerals is the best way to go. It is very easy to get good protein and keep calories low (as I've proven to myself)

Information I'm spewing is coming from my personal trainer, close friends I know who are body builders, and the Body For Life plan (which is for women too) Please do consider what I'm saying, it just might help you.. really it just might..

Try reading "Fat Wars" by Brad King, amazing book, learned tons. There is also a website with the basic principles, fatwars.com. But remember you shouldn't be on a diet, it's a lifestyle about being healthy and being at a healthy weight for you. And hopefully having some self acceptance for the things you can't change. If you want to improve your overall health and be able to maintain a healthy weight, eat balanced meals containing both carbohydrates and proteins.

Starting any meal plan that takes away things that you need is never good long term.

Too much of any one thing is never healthy.

Youre not veggie if you eat fish, that makes you pescatarian.

It leaves you with
Seitan from gluten
Soya products like Tofu, TVP and Tempeh
Eggs
Dairy like cottage cheese and lower fat hard cheeses.

If you exercise youre going to need some carbs in your diet. Do you do any resistance training, and by that i mean full body compoud movements with a relative heavy weight?

There is protein in beans also. Black beans has been my choice as of late. Black beans, kidney beans... etc.

Of course whey/soy protein shakes.

Like the others said, especially if not eating meat, you will need to add carbs to your menu if you are exercising.


Don't be scared of lots of Protein,


Actually... I have found more women afraid of free weights and resistance training than anything else concerning weight loss/weight maintaining/exercise.


it will help you lose weight too!


This just sounds like a TV commercial selling people the latest "insta-skinny".

Can you supply some solid evidence to back up that statement?

Tufts University did a study comparing Atkins (high protein, high fat, low carb), The Zone (30/30/40 protein, fat & carb) and Ornish (high carb, low fat, low protein) diets. What they found was that people lost weight on all of them and the effects on their cholesterol and other markers were similar. The deciding factor was how closely people followed them, not which diet they were on. So, pick you diet and stick to it. Calories are calories. Consume more than you burn and you store it as fat.
