have you ever enjoyed touching your bunny????Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
i just bought a bunny today for my little girl....she's wanted one for a while and now shes gonna love me more than her mom.
but what im suprised at is that i like this thing more than a cat...its sooo damn cute and they're funny to watch when they hop around.
never thought id like a rabbit as a pet.
anyone have any advice on pet responsibilities when it comes to bunnies?

make sure they have wood blocks to chew on...they need to erode their teeth.
If they don't , they will get to the point where they can't eat, and the teeth will have to be snipped back by the vet.

They can be litter trained as easily as a cat....and my flop ear ("Wabbit" , in an homage to Elmer Fudd) LOOOOOVEs mini wheats.

They love to chew on cords....keep them away from the vacuum cleaner cord, the computer, or the extension cords, etc. in the garage.

Go easy on the carrots and leafy veggies...or they get intestinal problems. Also, a good cookbook which has great recipes for rabbit is almost an essential for any rabbit owner.
NO picking them up by the ears.
The reason why you got one is a bit...hmmm...disturbing. The "one-up-manship" of getting a rabbit to "buy your childs love" seems a bit...hmmm...shallow. BUT...they do make great pets...and are very sociable, moreso than any cat.

Anyhow's...enjoy it...they ARE funny.

Our children had a flop-earred ... they make nice pets. The problem we had with our bunny was that unlike the dog who could whine for attention, bunnies are quiet creatures and I believe ours occasionally got the short end of the stick when it came to getting attention.

Like all living creatures, they need attention too.

they like toys. And a box to sleep in....preferrably with some kind of nesting material in it.

I had a lop for almost 15 years. She passed recently, but she was so cute. Her name was Thumper. I now have a smaller lop named Lars. He is so fuzzy. He loves listening to the radio and going on his leash.

Just wait till he starts pooping all over your house, my dear, you will probably buy a cat to take care of that problem.

rabbits are actually much neater than cats or dogs (or ferrets...I have four of those, too)...and they litter train just as easily.
...and trust me, rabbit poop (accidents do happen) is MUCH easier to clean up than either dog or cat.

Well, that's true, Pandy. I just remember my friends' bunny when we were growing up and all the little gifts he left. They named him Poopers. lol

Remember to rabbit proof the cords in your house. I looked after a couple for a few months, and they were obsessed with severing phone lines. Didn’t matter how many heavy objects I’d drag in front of the lines. They were rabbits on a mission… search and sever. Went through about 4 phone lines...

Other than that, cool pets. Easy to litter train. They liked lots of hay, and a little hutch to sleep in.

Oh, be careful with them on smooth flooring, if they spook on it, they can injure themselves badly.

I've never had a rabbit for a pet, but I thought I heard somewhere that it's easy to injure their spine. (with rough handling, etc.) If this is true, I'd be cautious. But hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about can say for sure.

I had one. I rescued from the pound I named him Roger. He took to me right away. When I would come home from work he would run right up to me and he slept in my bed. Also one of the best pets I ever had.

You'll need to take a little more effort to litter train than a cat, in my experience. When I got Benny, he stayed in his cage at first (except when playing) with a shoebox lid for a litter box. Try to catch him in time and put him in the lid, and if he misses always put it in the box. They really always go in the same place.

When he gets bigger, get him a litter box. S/he might have some "poop" accidents but as long as you keep the box clean you shouldn't have an issue with urine at all.

So... has he jumped straight up about 2 feet in the air, spun around with ears out (looking like a helicopter) and then landed on the run? If not, you'll die laughing the first 100 times it happens.

Can't emphasize the cord advice enough. When benny was little there was a loud "POP" behind the tv... thankfully, he came away with his life, but his front teeth were brown and he couldn't really eat pellets for two or three days (had to soak them in water.) He was very very lucky though... watch out.

Have fun!

He's dead. Thanks.

That reminds me, chalk: Be very careful when your rabbit is hopping around not to allow him to get tangled up in your feet. Seriously. It'll happen in a second, because they will generally follow you around.
