Cold, lonely nights....and sleeping alone
Posted: 11/21/2005 11:21:10 AM
After sharing my bed with another for 12 years...how do I become comfortable sleeping alone?
Right now I place pillows down the length of the bed, but I want to stop having to rely on that to get to sleep. How do I wean myself off needing another body beside me? Anybody with ANY ideas, tricks, or comments would be greatly appreciated. Cheers...

I hadn't slept alone in 13 years. I have a california king bed!! I place my clean folded laundry on one side of the bed since i have such little closet space. Then i got 2 cats and 2 dogs. Some nights there isnt even room for me to get into bed with them now. Yes i hate it .. the animals dont hug back, nor the pillows. I have been finding myself just stayin up instead of sleeping. I try to sleep at friends if i can, but this week was my wedding annivarsary, first that past since the break up ended up callin the ex and seeing if he would mind my sleepin over just so i could get some sleep :X I have been trying everything with no luck yet. If someone finds the answer let me know!!

Dear Holyserendipity

I hate to say it,but you will have to adjust like the rest of us.yes we all have been in relationships in our life with, boyfriends or husbands. No one is saying that they dont miss the comfort of cuddling up to someone or having that special someone there that they or their partner can reach out to make love to.We are all human and need that desire of loved and wanted ,on both physical and emotional levels. At least know your not alone in your situation.I hope for you what i hope for all of us seeking someone in their life to be there on whatever level they are seeking.hang in there,it takes time to heal sometimes in life.take care.

Oh come on now, it's not that bad.
Look at it like this:
You get the whole bed to yourself.
You don't have to put up with anyone's fart smells but your own.
You can eat all the crackers and cookies you want in bed.
Falling asleep with the T.V. on is no crime.
No one there to kick you for hitting the snooze button too many times.
Silly jammies ar a must, lace itches anyways.
No snoring, ahhhh the silence

So now why is sleeping alone so bad you guys?
I love it, relish it, look forward to it.

If I feel not tired baby, I usually throw myself all over the room whilst watching the wresling, that tires me out...

yeah sleeping alone sucks......it just takes time to get used to the fact that your all alone in the bed......remove one pillow every night..have a nice warm bath about half an hour before you get into bed....it helps you relax....tighten and relax your muscles.....take long deep breaths with your eyes closed......just remeber to breath in through your nose and out through your mouth........just try to relax....save your bed for sleeping...dont read or watch tv.....if after 30 minutes your still not asleep.get up and read in the living room....itll take you a while to get adjusted to the empty bed.....dont rush yourself.......good luck...

Well it helps to spend the money and make a few changes!

Indulge in a new set of satin sheets or flannel if you need the warmth. Just make sure it's something that you'll look forward to climbing into! A nice cozy blanket helps too for those nights when you sleep on the couch because the bed feels lonely. We've all done it!

It still won't be easy for awhile but by making a few changes at least it won't have as many memories.

what I did...

Buy a body pillow, spray it with a lavender scent, it helps your mind calm and allows you to sleep deeply. Also there is a lotion out there, I forget who it's by but you should be able to get in anywhere if you slather it on before bed garuntee'd you'll sleep better.

It's hard to get used to sleeping alone, but the body pillow gives you something to cuddle with, even though it's not the same, it's like your not in bed alone.

Hope this helps.

Actually, physiologically speaking, cuddling with a pillow is better for your back. Beds were not designed (until recently) with spinal alignment in mind. My body pillow is a god send. Not only because I love to cuddle and all of my guys are thousands of miles away, but because it makes up for the physical comfort that having someone to wrap myself around provides.

If you keep a pillow between your knees, it separates your legs and puts less straing on your back at the shoulder and pelvic areas, so being physically comfortable helps me sleep. Then, just remember not to take naps during the day, no cafienne, no alcohol, and no excersize within two hours of bed time. Also, run yourself as ragged as possible during the day. I had massive insomnia after my ex and I broke up. These sleep therapy tips are what got me through.

Well...what I did was stop sleeping on my bed...and sleep on the couch. I have been sleeping on the couch now for many years. Not sure I could ever get used to sleeping in a bed again. You might try a body pillow...wrap it in an electric blanket...but I really recommend the couch.

If at first you don't succeed... to hell with the bed!! Try the couch. After a while, you'll be sore, and sick to death of waking up in the middle of the night not knowing where the hell you're at.
The bed, empty or not, will start lookin real good!!! Also, try reading yourself to sleep. Remember to take care of yourself, do nice things for your favorite person (YOU)! and it will get better.
I've actually gotten to the point now, whoever ends up in my bed is going to have to be pretty dam special. I don't want to share with just anybody. And if he left, he aint even that!

I haven't slept in a bed since my ex and I separated in 03- too much empty space, even with my dogs.

I imagine you'd get used to it if you really don't like it but for me...I love having the bed to myself.

Alarmed made some great points about sleeping alone but the one I am so glad is over is:

No one there to kick you for hitting the snooze button too many times.

The idea of falling asleep on the floor was pretty funny and might even work....
