| I have a gripe.... Posted: 11/22/2005 3:25:41 PM | Why do people feel they must put a body position while writing into words? IE "Shrugs," "Waggles Eyebrows," "Sighs," "Spews," (I hate that word) etc. Not very original OR graphic...Is it because NO ONE has an imagination? Or is it 'just a trend?' I don't expect any answers here, at least not positive, because it seems as if EVERYONE does this....just wondered WHY they do it? I know they are verbs, but they are lies. Who really sighs, spews or waggles anything while writing? If you do, I would like to do a photo essay, or a scientific study on you and the results of human physical responses to a computer message. I know, I know, every one is going to answer this thread with a sigh, spew, or a shrug...who the heck cares? Oh same for emoticons...thats another peeve of mine. | |

| I have a gripe.... Posted: 11/22/2005 3:34:13 PM | | I do understand what you are saying but you have to give some credit to people who do this. In real life meaning face to face communication we would normally be able to observe the other persons body language and be aware of their sighs, waggle eyebrows or whatever. Here on the internet we don't get those cues to add to our communication. It simply gives the reader some insight into how another person may feel about what is said because there is no body language to read. For me I appreciate it as it makes me understand not only just the written words but identifies the emotions involved in the text. | |

| Yep Posted: 11/22/2005 3:42:14 PM | Jesie is exactly right - here on the 'net, in print form, we lose almost all of our visual clues as to a persons meaning, and have only what they write to go by. Many "flamewars" (arguments) between people start because of the lack of visual clues which help us understand what a person is *really* saying.
Example:
I hate you!
vs
I hate you! {grin}
Without the {grin} , the second sentence would have the same meaning as the first. The {grin} lets you know that I am kidding, and that I don't hate you at all. :)
And I don't. :D | |

salamander000 said Who really sighs, .. ...... *sigh* I do! I did... and now and again, i *grin* or i *tear*
..and if its a trend, its probably the longest one i've adhered to. Since i've been using expressions on my message boards since 1998. *shrug* | |

| I have a gripe.... Posted: 11/22/2005 4:21:35 PM | haha ok, now I see your points! How many times have I had an email misunderstood? Now I know what it says about a person who ALWAYS shrugs, or sighs, thank you!~!
Ok my new gripe, how come the 'fruit of the loom' guys have 2 grapes, one raisin, and an apple? Are those all 'guy' fruits? What ever happened to peaches, plums, pears, and papayas? Not to mention strawberries, cranberries, and yes, I'll say it... BLUE berries? Are they just 'too fruity' to advertise? Or is there no imagination?

| I have a gripe.... Posted: 5/27/2007 4:46:43 PM | I know what you mean, they can be fun once in a while but not used as a form of communication. I have to attend online lectures each week and they have introduced those emoticons to the whiteboard. Now theres people sending the crap continuly when the format should be serious. I wouls suppose that they are fun for children but not for me. I did find one for the american flag that was cool .
