| Commonwealth and the Queen, good thing or bad thing? Posted: 12/22/2004 5:33:10 AM | Ok so it's not a current event as such but since so many of you are Canadians i thought that most would have an opinion of some kind?! I know that in England there are many people who would like to get rid of the royal family, and many in scotland and wales want complete independance from England, for any of you in a commonwealth country or any country really, what are your opinions, does it mean anything to you? Do you think you would be better off if you'd never been part of the 'British Empire' or do you think you would be better off if the 'empire' still existed? | |

It may choose to get rid of you, long before your missadventures could ever depose The Crown of England...

| Commonwealth and the Queen, good thing or bad thing? Posted: 12/22/2004 7:32:44 AM | Yanno, I'm Canadian, live in the capital, and been to our governor General's residence who is our token representative to the 'Throne".
My view is that I'm all in for that "long tradition", and tourism that it brings to you're country, I think that canada should at least get the Queen off of our money, and put our own figureheads on it.
Believe me, the Governor General and her residence is a money pit, with it's lavish grounds etc.
Her only role is as a figurehead.
I like that commonwealth club that we belong to though, bur just not all that tax waste that goes with it.

With the Queen as head of state and the Prime Minister as the head of the government, Canadians are more vocal in demanding accountablity. For example in the states people don't seem to hold the President to account for a great deal as head of government because of the respect they have for the President as head of state.
I believe thats one of the reasons Canada didn't get dragged in.

| Commonwealth and the Queen, good thing or bad thing? Posted: 12/22/2004 6:14:40 PM | I don't like any class of people being supported solely by the state. I don't like the neo-aristocracy we have here in the US, like the Bushes and the Kennedys...they make a terrible mess out of government and it seems they just use government as a tool for their own personal ambitions and let the interests of the people go to the back of their minds... The Queen and her brood are the same from what I can see, only worse.
I believe in the ideals of the age of enlightenment, that individuals in society should be endowed with the same basic rights under the law and nobody should be born into some special class of people that gets to go first everytime and so forth.
Call me a Jeffersonian.

( actually probably about the 15th or something.) The Yankees tried to invade Canada in 1812 and promptly got their asses kicked by the British Army, who burned down their Whitehouse. And with all the third world immigration to Canada now I think its important to honor the traditions that made this country.

The english should stick to what they do best................. Bad teeth and sh*ty food
I'm shocked guitarman! Are you saying that sandwiches, roast beef, breakfasts consisting of sausages (which almost no one know what is contained within), fried bacon, fried eggs, fried tomatos, frieds mushrooms, baked beeans and buttered toast with tea; deep fried fish, deep fried chips (fries in your world), deep fried mars bars (a sickly enough bar at the best of times made from chocolate, toffee and nougat that people from Newcastle decided to deep fry and have with chips in order to cut short their lives) are not good, wholesome, tasty and nutritious food?
It does seem amazing that we develop **** all on this diet. You know of National Health Service was set up after the world wars becuase when people were conscripted it was found that the average working class britain was too unhealthy to fight, They gave most of them the benefit of the doubt andway and let them go off and get killed in Europe.

1) To remind the millions of Chinese immigrants flooding Canadian cities that the country they're finding refuge in was created by Britian, founded on Western principles and is a Western Democracy and NOT an Asian dictatorship.
2 To remind the Quebecans that the French lost!

| Commonwealth and the Queen, good thing or bad thing? Posted: 11/20/2005 12:02:19 PM | I like the monarchy.
As a Canadian I think it cost me very little if anything to support Canada's royal heritage. I like the historical connection and tradition that go along with this institution. It is an essentially benign political setup and an important part of our history.
Canada has done well to inherit the British governmental model, an institution that serves us fairly well. I see no reason to discard it.

| Commonwealth and the Queen, good thing or bad thing? Posted: 11/20/2005 12:29:07 PM | I hate the Monarchy. It is disgusting and I will tell you why.
We still live in a world where the rulers believe in all this King and Country BS.
The Royal Family is nothing but cowards because they expect everyone to fight for them instead.
Somebody here mentioned the empire never went anywhere. And that is true. It just turned into a corporation.
It's 2005. We think we have been advancing but we really haven't if you think about it. The top one percent have been expanding their power through globalization.
Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely.

This statement is both incorrect and ignorant. To suggest that the Monarchy is a outdated institution is legitimate. To question their courage is simply absurd.
The British Monarchy has an excellent tradition of military service, that tradition continues in the present generation of Princes who are both heading into a military career.
