Sex and VOCABULARY!
Posted: 12/8/2005 7:26:24 AM
Is it just me, or is anyone else AMAZED how many people can't spell or put a sentence together??? I know, yes, it has been mentioned in the non-sexual and non-dating rhelm, but after reading so many threads - I thought it warranted another mention...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find the mind (and its abilities) to be just as sexy as the person. I have always said that I would trade a great body in for a great mind - and find intelligence to be VERY sexy.

So, in light of what I have encountered, I want to say....PLEASE PEOPLE...use your computer to all of its abilities!! Use a spellcheck - or something - to make it appear that you graduated 8th grade! I am a realist - and I know that at least in the sex and dating forums, the majority (no, not all) of people are interested in meeting other people with the same interests. There are things that enhance that possibility...a nice pic, kind words, interest(s) in common...AND THE PROPER USE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!

I don't care how "hot" you are - if I can't talk to you...about something more than fashion and make-up, I am not going to be interested! And guys - same goes for you...you want to attract women? Then let them know you are more than just a tool! Brains and braun get you farther!

Ok, so my first post is fairly opinionated - and somewhat offensive...but for those of you that are offended - take the time to alleviate the problem - and use your computer's resources!! Please know that I love reading the forums - and I respect and admire anyone that offers an opinion...so if I offeded anyone, it is certainly not my intention! I'm just trying to do what I can to make POF a better (and educated) place! Happy Holidays and blessings to all - regardless of what "form" of holiday you celebrate!

WOW! I bet it took some time to write that.

I have to agree it is very difficult to read some of the posts and E-Mails when people use poor grammar and spelling. Hey we all have typos, but if you read an E-Mail and end up with a completely different meaning then something is wrong.

Whilst I agree I do think people tend to go a little overboard and can be a tad condescending when it comes to grammar, in the big picture it doesn't actually matter that much and some people are just better with words than others,

So just chill guys and be happy that people are taking the time to mail you

A typo is one thing, incorrect grammar and spelling to the extent that the meaning of the post or email is lost, is another! I can't tell you how many emails I've gotten that say "u r hott" or "u r a sexy women" blaaaah!!

If the meaning of the mail is lost then I would agree

Thank you kat...and you are correct! I apologize for my oversight! Ironic though isn't it...if nothing else - adds a bit of humor to the topic...

I think we should keep in mind that english might be a second language for some people, and if thats the case, I commend them for doing their best in a language that isn't their mother tongue. I'm not going to rule out speaking to sombody that can't type, but if I sense that its just because of plain laziness, it will turn me off..

Sure, there are exceptions...where I live, there are as many people whose first language is french rather than english and of course I take that into account. Also, small typos, especially if you're into IMing, where you can't really proofread everything you write are just natural and happen to everyone. Something else I've noticed is that the American/British spellings are different and I never get bothered by that.

But...profiles can be read and re-read and proofread and proofread by a friend, etc., so they should be a little more proficient. After I've read their profile and there is no legitimate reason for the bad spelling/grammar, if I can still understand them and we have similar interests, I will keep in touch, but if that isn't there, I have to wonder how intelligent they are.

Very good Kitty... I am very impressed with the people that have taken the time to find the errors! Now, can anyone find the third one? I planted 3 of them to see how closely people examined my words considering the topic (yes, what an evil thing to do - psychology can be a ****)! There is one more...good luck in your reading! Thanks to all - you have made my day interesting with this little experiment! LMAO

I think we should keep in mind that english might be a second language for some people

But what about all of those for whom it is their native language? They spend years in school being taught English spelling and grammar, and reading at least their textbooks written in correct English, they have online resources such as spell check and dictionaries, and yet they still can't put together a paragraph for their profiles that doesn't give the impression that they slept through school.

IMPRESSIVE...that is correct! Braun, as I spelled it, is used mostly in the spelling of a last name...from German history. Most notorious example...Eva Braun...eventual wife of Adolf Hitler. And no, I am not a Hitler fan! ( I know how these threads can get crazy with tangents!) Thanks for the responses - and as I mentioned - I wasn't trying of offend anyone so I hope there is no animosity!

Maybe POF should add a spell check in the posting page(s). Or maybe there is one and I just have not paid attention...

It's funny I came across this thread after last night. I was chatting with a guy friend from high school. I haven't talked to him for a few years, so we decided to IM one another. I thought I was seeing things when I looked at what he was typing! None of it made any sense, and when I asked him what he was talking about, he got all pissed off! WTF?! He couldn't spell, I had to decipher everything he wrote, no type of puncuation, and it was just one long sentence with about 3 or 4 different topics. All I can say is that conversation ended quickly and on a bad note. I don't usually judge on these things because I make my own mistakes, but that was hard not to laugh at. I can handle small mistakes, but this guy wasn't even at a 5th grade writing level. YUCK.

Or that they are STILL sleeping! Amazing that some won't take a clue from something they JUST read and spell it correctly in order not to appear a fool... I suppose one letter is as good as another where words are concerned!

This is an actual email I got.... names deleted to protect the guilty... I mean seriously... I actually wrote this guy back and told him I could not understand him.

"***** in guelph just curious bi curious male wanting to foll fill a fantasy to be wish a couple and do oral on male while female helps ouy curious let me know"

Now, not only did he not read my profile, but no punctuation or spelling is a deal breaker.
