Have you had them? Do you like them? Can't live without them?
Saskatoon berries are from the praries and taste sort of like a cross between blueberries and cherries. You haven't lived until you've tried them...

Saskatoon berries....mmmm taste like a fat blueberry with less flavour.

Never really understood the appeal of them, like Saskatoon berry pie etc...

to me its like taking a california farm production strawberry and comparing it to a little succulent wild strawberry.

That's the stuff!! From Last Mountain Farms, Southey, Saskatchewan. They send their preserves all over the place, but I don't know about Kentucky. Costco sells it, or you may be able to order them from the producer, above. Many of the large grocery chains here in Vancouver sell it. I was raised in Saskatchewan, and we used to go pick them. They grow wild. Many years later here I am in Vancouver and had almost forgotten about Saskatoons when I saw them in a jar! I am now officially in HEAVEN!!!

Saskatoons grow wild out here in Alberta. I make pies, jams and syrup from them. Here is an awesome pie recipe. You could substitute blueberries if you like.

Saskatoon Cream Pie

This mixture can be placed into a pastry shell for a pie. Or for those small desserts use pre-prepared tart shells.

1 Cup Sour Cream
2 Tbsp. Flour
¾ Cup Sugar
1 Tsp. Vanilla
¼ Tsp. Salt
1 Egg
2 ½ Cups Saskatoons

TOPPING
3 Tbsp. Flour
1 ½ Tbsp. Butter
3 Tbsp. Chopped Nuts

1. Mix all the ingredients EXCLUDING the saskatoons.
2. Fold the saskatoons into the above mixture.
3. Pour into the desired pastry shells.
4. Make crumb topping.
5. Sprinkle crumbs onto of pie or tarts.
6. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes to an hour (less for tarts).

Saskatoons are amazing berries when fresh. Don't EVER get these things frozen, EVER!!!
There's a syrup brand i think called Summerland Sweets, they make Saskatoon berry syrup and it's a pretty good product.

Here around Regina and other parts of South Saskatchewan they grown on the sides of roads, in ravines - recently I've noticed that there are more and more of the local farms have started to cultivate them and grow them for sale - I'm afraid their popularity will change the "fun" of saskatoons - going out with a friend, an ice cream pail, some mosquito repellant, and an empty stomach, as you eat more than you pick... takes me back to being a kid...

As to frozen products - hmmm not as good - but will always save a container for later in the year as they are ready to be picked in June/early July - and save them for some Saskatoon Peach Jam .....

Parenteau's Gourmet Foods can be found on the net - they have great products and I know they ship....for those that live far away....

One of the favorite wild berries here in Manitoba as well. I've got several saskatoon trees in the bush right beside my house, and I can usually pick several gallons in a summer. They're great just with cream and sugar,or baked in pies,or of course jam.

They are everywhere out here in middle alberta, back when i lived in Peace River my mum would make me and my sisters go with her to pick buckets of them. We had so much saskatoon pie in those years that i dont know if i can eat them again. They were alright for taste, but kinda bland and too many seeds in the berries.
