Boycott corporate America...

I was walking past a video store today I used to rent videos from and saw Boycott corporate America painted on the sidewalk in frount of it. The video store is one of a chain of thousands, it made me laugh because the management of this particular store treated me bad once. I can't remember exacley what happened but I complained to her higher ups and when nothing was done their higher ups so on and so forth, and I never got an answer from anyone or recieved an apology...It really pissed me off I spent a ton of money there..Ha! I remember I had these free certifacates from my long distence provider and it didn't say anything about rent one get on on the card yet the manager would not honor the certifacates..Then she started harassing me everytime I went into the store asking for a picture I.D. Anyway with that experience there I wonder whatever happened to "The customer is king/queen?" What the hell happened to that? It seems like corporate America treats people like sh*t...You want our product? Will your going to have to beg for it? That would be my reason to boycott corporate America..Why give somebody money if their just going to treat you bad? that's one question I'm asking here the other is what do you think about boycotting corporate America?

despite frustration, i think it is a counterproductive experiment. I had a friend who did that and it was really hard on his family. eventually, he had to change his ways to be able to provide a good life for his family. He took the vow of the nazarene tho.. that is a little more extreme than boycotting corporate america.
Now if you had said to boycott credicard companies, well, i am all for that. :)

I did not write this, or know what the source is, but I thought I'd share it anyway....

Not One Damn Dime Day - Jan 20, 2005
Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it, Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Dime Day" in America.
On "Not One Dime Day" is for those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending.
During "Not One Dime Day" please don't spend money. Not one dime for gasoline. Not one dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one dime for anything for 24 hours.
On "Not One Dime Day," please boycott Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target etc...
Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter).
For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down.
The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their responsibility to stop it.
"Not One Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for the people of the United States of America, not for the international corporations and lobbyists who represent the corporations and funnel cash into American politics.
"Not One Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The politicians put the troops in harm's way.
Now 1,200 brave young Americans and (some estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a plan -- a way to come home.
There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On "Not One Dime Day" you take action by doing nothing.
You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed.
For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one dime, to remind our religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people.
Please share this email with as many people as possible.

LOL amazing how just about every post ends up with a anti Iraq war post. Simply amazing, so Im going to actually stay on the topic, and not start that debate here to.

I agree with igtoosu, kinda hard to boycott corporate America since that would mean growing your own food, turning off your utilities and that would include your internet, make your own cloths, and ride a bike. Sounds like you would have to be Amish, God bless em I couldnt live that way, although at times is a happy thought.

You did the right thing by stop spending your money there and voicing your opinion. As frustrating as it is, you felt it did no good. I have done the same, but ya know obviously they have p*ssed someone else off as you read on the sidewalk. They keep doing it they wont have revenue.
Bout all ya can do is spend your cash at the competitors, and know you have self justification for it.

And I to have boycotted CC such a money leech.

LOL guys.... watchman can't be expected to debate *every* post just to entertain you all. I'm sure he has more important things to do since he owns his own business and such. In fact, if you really wanted to boycott corporate america you could ask him what he does and maybe even send a little business his way.

Other ways to "d*mn the man":
- Free software. There is a *bunch* of it out there. The most obvious is Linux (replace Windows), but a few others that are very good are OpenOffice (replace MS Office), Mozilla Firefox (replace internet explorer), and Mozilla Thunderbird (replace MS Outlook). They're all free and they're all open source, both of which are good things when trying to d*mn the man.

- Just stop buying so much crap. LOL how much junk have you bought that you no longer use? The man needs you to buy useless junk to keep the cycle going.

- Send their junk mail back to them. Preferably with advertisements from another company stuffed inside. Because every time you return one of those things they've gotta pay the post office.

- Join the national "do not call registry". And tell a friend about it.

- If you're totally screwed and have no way to pay off all your debt: have your mom bake you a cake and pay her every last dime you have. Then pay for everything on credit, get sh*tfaced every night and have a great time for 180 days. Then on day 181, you declare bakruptcy. 2 days after that, you fix your mom's car and she pays you back the price of that cake.

if that chain of stores starts with a 'B', then you should boycott for a number of other reasons including: censoring their videos to meet their 'christian values'; terrible customer service; killing off independent stores; and ripping off their customers.....

It's not possible to entirely boycott corporate America.

However, you can "buy local", whenever possible. I live near a rural area so I go to the local farmer's market when they have seasonal fruits and vegetables. I also choose to partonize local independent businesses when I can.

But, the main thing I do is consume less. My major purchase this year was a computer and I would not have purchased that had the old one been workable. Since I need the compuer for my freelance work, I have a new one (but it was financed by a friend).

There are many things I don't own and live happily without:

I don't own a car since I am able to walk or take the bus and live in a city.
I don't have many kitchen gadgets and somehow manage to cook without them.
I don't have a DVD player or a VCR
I don't buy clothes with logos on them, in fact I seldom buy new clothes and own only one pair of boots, one pair of dress shoes and one pair of running shoes.
I don't use already-prepared foods and seldom eat out (although I have a Tim Horton's coffee habit I've vowed to break).

There are a lot of other things I could list, but all I'm trying to say is you can choose to live more simply, and enjoy it. In the process, you'll do less to support the corporate fat cats.

Just wanted to add to your list of GPL (General Public License) here. It's a good start.
Certainly the price of software privitazation has gone waaay overboard and people don't really even pay attention to it. Back when I started in the Atari (yeah I know quite a ways back) days of computing I went to the local computer outlet that sold disks as Public Domain and the idea was that you were giving fifty cents to your local store to help with it's business.

That gave me a whole magazine to read and alot of extra fun "goodies" to play with back then. Now you pay $200 for the latest upgrade of Microshaft windows to find out your computer may be incompatible and the major bugs that are the important one's that are able to give you device driver support are so unstable that it crashes every other day. lol.

lyrical heart: you seem to have it figured out pretty well! Actually it sounds like a lot of the people posting in this thread have it figured out.

single_iso: I agree with both of your suggestions as well. I'm not sure how many of the "average" computer users on here will actually want to use those resources, but for someone that is a nerd like me MySQL and Sourceforge are excellent. So is PHP and PEAR. Really I could go on and on about this (in fact I subscribe to the PHP newsgroup ) but I just figure most folks on this site aren't interested to talk about open source software. But if you are interested and you read this message, feel free to email me.

byrd: if you're interested there are some online movie stores you should check out. They will let you rent a couple of movies for as long as you want... and when you're ready for a new movie you just send them back. Same for video games if you rent those. The catch: you have to pay a fixed monthly fee. But there are never late charges so if you rent a lot of movies then you should google for "online movie rental".
