| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 9:36:37 PM | Have any of you tried it or have any of your partners tried it? Is it comfortable? Is it comfortable during sex? Do you or your partner notice it during sex? | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 9:38:18 PM | never heard of it ...
what is it ? | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 9:43:19 PM | | it's a new form of birthcontrol for a women to use.. it's this clear looking squishy ring you stick in your vagina and leave it there for a month-- | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 9:52:57 PM | here's the skinny.. my best friend tried the nuvaring some months ago and really dug it.. her gyno told her that it only comes out during sex if you get "crazy" and she's had sex with it in several times only lost one.. and by "lost" i mean it popped out and she never found it, but she swears by the things........
so i had to try it.. personally i've had mine in for like 3 weeks.. so far no crazy side effects.. it's larger than expected but i can't feel it at all.. size wise i'd liken it to the bottom of a pop can.. not the bigger part, but the smaller ring on the inside that the can sits on.. anyway so that seems big, but it's not bad.. it's a little unruly getting it in, you have to squish it in half and it's a little slippery but once it's in place there's no problems as far as i can tell.. there's a hilarious video on the nuvaring website that explains it more in detail.. it shows how to properly insert and use the ring, funny but informative.. as for sex it can come out if you're not comfy leaving it in during sex, you can have it out for up to 3 hours..
only suggestion i have is the have your gyno put the first one in and maybe try to insert/remove once before leaving the office.. i did not do this and was left with some questions when i first tried it out.. but my best friend had them help out with the first one so she had some pointers for me..
all in all i'd say go for it..
..and that is all. | |

| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 10:00:08 PM | thanks so much for the info =)

I watched the video and I laughed so hard.. haha. Most of my reservations about using it are for during sex-- good to know it can be left out for a little bit-- I was thinking it would suck during sex if the ring kept falling out and you had to mess with sticking it back in while you're trying to go at it- total mood killer. heh.
thanks for the info... i'm printing te coupons for my dr appointment. lol.

| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 10:02:13 PM | so what advantages does that hold over getting a shot once a month ?
ah , is it also a birth prentative like a condom ? as in a physical barrier ? ( I can see that being better when not with a long term partner , although any sensible single man carries condoms anyways if hes looking for sex .
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 10:07:22 PM | | advantage i dont know--- it has an advantage to taking a pill everyday and it has an advantage over sticking an annoying 'patch' on your body for all to see each week- With the ring you insert one a month.. I've never had the shot- so I have no idea... the ring is just a ring.. it's not a barrier-- it's just a ring that releases hormones- just like the pill and the patch.. if you want a good laugh go to the website nuvaring. com and watch their video on how to insert and take out the ring.. | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 10:18:06 PM | the advantage is you can pick it up at your local pharmacy without having to make an appointment and sit in a waiting room all damn day.. the advantage over the depo shot which is less time consuming than a monthly shot is that you're not stuck with the hormones if they don't work well with your body..
it's not a barrier.. it's a ring that just sits in there and releases hormones at a steady pace.. much like the pill but with a lower dose of estrogen (less you're taking progesterin only pills) but trust me as a girl the lower the estrogen the better.. it's 99% effective so that's not fool proof but if you're in a stable long term relationship and you've both tested clean then it's a better way to go then the condom..
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 12/22/2005 10:31:07 PM | | their website has a compare thing on it-- i did the pill the shot and the ring.. the pill and ring were 99% effective and the ring is 99.7% heh for those who want to be technical about the effectiveness.. =) | |

| Nuvaring Posted: 4/17/2006 1:37:37 PM | | Nurarings have been around for a while longer... any more exposure to it out there? | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/17/2006 1:40:31 PM | | I think I'd go limp if I knew the girl had one of those in her... | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/17/2006 3:06:09 PM | | ^^ what's so horrible about that idea? There are a lot of grosser things I can think of to sex than a small plastic ring... | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/17/2006 5:42:19 PM | | tried it. didnt really like it.. had spotting throughout the entire month. about it poping out... never happened to me....as much as it says you can have it out for 3 hours you shouldnt take it out at all. | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/17/2006 7:30:49 PM |
and by "lost" i mean it popped out and she never found it,
whoa there...FG just had a total brain freeze! You mean this thing is wandering around loose in her vagina all lost...or it pooped out on the bed/floor/kitchen counter and she never found it?
I'm researching birth control, and this is definetly a "must know" thing for me, lol!
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/17/2006 8:23:30 PM | | I'm thinking the guy swallowed it... | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/17/2006 8:24:56 PM | | what do your periods do with this form of bc? | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 9:02:52 AM | | ^^ from what I know, you actually take the ring out after the 21st day and then put the new one in on the 28th. Or you can wear the rings 21 days back to back and skip the period. | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 11:38:44 AM | | hhhmmmmm, what are the advantages and disadvatages? i know that more and more ppl are saying the shot is no good anymore...i can see why now...lol.....but why is nuvaring the choice now? | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 1:45:56 PM | ok, I may be going off course a little here, but I have a question. My Dr. said I couldn't have the patch because of my weight. I weigh more than 190. Anyone else been told that? I was on it before and it wasn't a problem and I'd never been told that before. I went to the website of the company that makes the patch, and it says nothing about weight being a factor for this. Anybody else have any ideas?? As for the NuvaRing, I've never tried it, but it would have to be better than remembering to take a pill!! And, I've only heard good things about it so far.. | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 2:32:15 PM | Haven't had Nuvaring, but I noticed someone was asking about shots, so...
Depo is once every 3 months, not once a month. It's a different set-up of hormones than the pill/patch/Nuvaring, which all use progesterone/estrogen.
For me, Depo was a nightmare. Yeah, I had no periods, which was pretty damn cool...but I had crazy moodswings, anything stressful made me cry, and I put on a lot of weight (about 30 lbs, which when you have tiny bone structure like mine is a ton of weight!). On top of that, I'm terrified of needles, so every shot was a minor ordeal.
The only negative I've heard about Nuvaring is that some folks can feel it during sex, men and women both. So I'd probably want to pop it out before I went to bed with someone, were I wearing it.
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 3:11:57 PM | The reason the ring is the thing now... is because it's once a month and people like it better than injectables because you can take it out if you react badly to it and do something else. It also has the lowest dose (I believe) of hormones on the market compared to the other options. It's absorbed consistantly into the body as opposed to once a day pills and "spikes" and I guess that helps with some things too. I believe the fairure rates are lower than oral contraceptives as well.
I have heard that they cause spotting or yeast infections more so than other methiods. I think my biggest question is how annoying are they if sometimes you can feel them...
My Dr. said I couldn't have the patch because of my weight. I weigh more than 190. Anyone else been told that?
Ortho Evra does talk about a weight restriction. It is still better than nothing if you're over the restriction but your risk of failure goes up to 19% or something when used correctly. I'm heard that consistantly about the patch...

| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 4:55:19 PM | To all people considering their birth control options: I know this is not the norm for Birth Control methods but here is my experience.
The Pill: I broke out in terrible acne, got crazy headaches and bloated up like a blowfish.. all water retention, the doctor assured me.. Great, so 90% of me was now water... so is a watermelon, and that's not exactly the figure I'm after!
I then decided to try the Depo-Provera shot. I figured a once-every-three-months shot must have some advantages... So I got it... I reacted badly. Mood swings, headaches, nausea, and SEVERE weight gain ... not to mention, I obviously didn't get my next shot three months later, but it took 9 months to have a menstrual cycle again (and man, it was painful) but the weigh gain didnt slow down unitl that time. All in all, I suffered through an additional 60 lbs of weight gain, incredible cramping, and some other serious issues.
Depo-Provera is NOT for everyone. My problem was my health care professional did not take the time to fully explain certain aspects, and to research my health status prior to administration, and all my best research was lost on facts only the doctor would know anyway, Make sure, with any method, you discuss ALL pros/cons/contraindictions and educate yourself. Don't rely on healthcare professionals, as they don't care nearly as much about your health as you do!
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 5:04:17 PM | | I am a huge fan of the shot. It was fantastic because I had no period and it is super effective. I had the opposite problem with mood swings. I had horrid mood swings and the shto took care of all that. I did gain a bit of weight but I was also a freshman in college when I started, so you never really knew. | |
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 6:02:38 PM | My daughters doc was showing her this a few months ago, and I thought it to be better because she wouldnt have to remember to take a pill everyday.
The insertion that he showed her was to empty out a tampon applicator, and squish the ring together and put it in the applicator, and then insert the ring the same as u would a tampon.
|
| Nuvaring Posted: 4/18/2006 6:24:03 PM | Havnt heard about this til now, but will be looking into this..
Ive been on the pill, which i found was very effective and reliable.. Used to put them somewhere i would see them so I could remember it.
I went on Depo after i had my son and took 3 shots, 9 months. I didnt really suffer mood swings, didnt get a period which i loved, Gained weight, which i really didnt love. I also found out about 6 months going off this that my ovaries do not work right (dont drop eggs properly and have a hormone imbalance.) Last time i had this checked, about 6 months ago the same thing was determined. My doctor believes it was related to Depo so be careful.. Especially if you do want kids one day, this might alter your chances at that.
The patch does have weight restrictions and has been linked to strokes from what i have heard.. It is effective though a friend was on it for quite awhile and she loved it.
