| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 12/23/2005 8:51:40 AM | | I'm finding it more difficult to date these days because I'm a smoker. Don't do the illegal smoking, only the legal. Does anybody else (I know there are) have the same problem? Can the opposite sex tolerate us? I'd like some positive views about it. I know that there will be negative views also. I'm not much of a drinker, but, I don't mind dating a woman who likes to have a few drinks. Now, the people who like to get stumbling down drunk all the time are not for me. Can a man or a woman overlook the smoking and consider the person within and not the person on the outside? I know this works for both sexes. Your comments will be appreciated. | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 12/23/2005 1:05:56 PM | My mom smoked 2-3 packs a day while I was growing up. She would light the next cigarrette with the lit one. We would drive in the car and she would be smoking the whole time and would not let us roll down the windows because she didn't want the smoke blowing around. She quit about 4 years ago and gained a lot of weight. Even now the after effects are so bad that she constantly is coughing and hacking nasty black phlem up. It's very sad and disgusting. I think I am jaded for life because of that.
I went to a local Plenty Of Fish picnic and 95% of the people smoked( both male and female) It seems like more people are smoking now than ever before.
That's an absolute deal breaker for me. I could see a perfect ten woman and the second she starts smoking she instantly becomes very ugly.
Not only does it stain your teeth, stink and kill you slowly but laziness usually comes with the package as well. How many of you have worked somewhere and the "smokers" get like ten 15 minute smoke breaks a day while you get stuck carrying the load while their all gone B.S.ing ???

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 12/23/2005 8:41:50 PM | | So, in your opinion, smokers are lazy and have brown teeth??? Kinda closed minded? So, if 95%of the women in Fla smoke, may I suggest that you join the Talaban where the women are not allowed to smoke or think for themselves. P.S. They don't allow them to use toothpaste or even take a bath. You might enjoy it there. | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 12/24/2005 4:33:39 AM | I hate everything about smoking. You smoke so you cannot imagine how offensive it can be to a non-smoker. I hate that it smells bad, stains teeth . I did not call "you" lazy. I hate that people can skip out on working and take many smoke breaks and it's socially accepted. And most of all I hate that it is so addictive that it makes you never wanna quit. Then the people you love die prematurely from something they did to themselves. All of my grandparents and my uncle died from lung cancer at a very young age because they smoked heavily and my mom is not far behind them.
NO, I WOULD NOT DATE A SMOKER.

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 12/24/2005 9:19:31 AM | I don't hate you Cajun. I hate cigarettes. I apoligize for getting snappy but that is truely how I feel. Merry Christmas to you too. It would be best for you to find a smoker and for myself to find a non-smoker. | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 12/24/2005 12:28:36 PM | Cajun, I smoked for, ummmm, oops, way over 30 years and for the most part felt the same way as you do.
You notice I said smoked, didn't you! It's totally immaterial here why I quit. What I do want to impart to you is what I found out after I quit. It may help you understand why you are having a hard time finding a date in the non-smoking sector.
Within weeks of quitting smoking I noticed that my sense of smell was much clearer. I found things smelt much stronger to me, both the fragrance of the tea rose and the smell of the ocean. Along with the good scents came the ability to smell the bad stuff. The smell of a dirty ashtray, once not noticed was now repulsive.
I found that being around a smoker left traces of the smoke lingering on my clothing and my hair. A coat flung over a chair in a smoker's living room would take up to 24 hours of hanging in fresh air (or a good spray with Fabreeze) to be clear of that smell. It was one of the bad smells that given a choice one would prefer not to inhale.
We won't go into the health issues involved with smoking because you've already heard them, I'm sure.
I don't know what you're looking for in regards to dating but I like to date (horribly antiquated word) with the intent that eventually, given some compatability and sometimes I think, just plain old good luck, that the relationship would meld into a committed long term thing. Soooo, when I start to date someone I am in a way sizing them up in terms of a future. At my age, I'd like that future to be as long and as healthy a one as possible. Realistically and statistically, a smoker is a bad choice for that, don't you think.

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 12/25/2005 6:31:50 AM | Yes, Smoking is a disease, you need to see it that way. You have a discusting, repulsive disease that will ultimately kill you and being around you will spread it.
Stop smoking, stop smoking and spend time at the beach, the park. You will see how much better your life will be without it.
Also I would like to point out other things being a smoker usually says about a persons personality
1- Usually addictive personalities. - I can drink, and have a ciggerette and not think about it ever again for years. I think in the last 5 years I have smoked 5 ciggerettes. And usually its only because I am going to be stuck around a bunch of smokers anyway and I want to desensitize myself to it first
2- Poor stress handling - "Things are baaaad.... need a ciggerette..." -- I've been there man, Learn to fix your problems not hide them in apuff of smoke
3- Ignorance - I hear everyday from smokers, "Ah Im gonna die eventually anyway" yea? Think about the moment you lie in your death bed because you cannot breathe, Think what you would do just for one more day. Was it really worth it?
Stop smoking man... There is no reason not to

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/12/2006 5:13:52 PM | Firebreather, is that smoke I see in your picture. There is a thread about double standards here on the forums, go read about your personality. I have dated men that do not smoke and have been very considerate of all the above STINK. Here's a solution. From now on, make it mandatory for everyone to smoke and that way no one will be offended and we all die together. | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/12/2006 5:31:17 PM | cajun....how can you tell someone to join the taliban just because they don't agree with smoking....you as a smoker know the risk, the side effects, etc, but you make the choice to light up anyways....
so we non smokers can make the choice to NOT date you....i've tried to date smokers, even lived with one...i couldn't stand kissing him til he brushed his teeth and used mouth wash...it was nasty...i recently hung out with a guy i dated three years ago...he didn't tell me he had started smoking...know how i knew....i kissed him and tasted it....he tried to deny it, but the taste was there...and he finally came clean about it...
i can tell which of my students smokes or has parents that smoke, they reek of cigarettes...there is just no way to avoid the stench cigarettes leave behind
i'm sure you'll find someone who can tolerate smoking...but for those of us who cannot...don't get angry at us...to each his own

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/12/2006 5:42:02 PM | As a non smoker there's nothing more of a turnoff than when a smoker HAS to have that smoke break after everything they do and for that matter during things they do. How annoying is it to have to wait for date to come back inside because they cannot go without a smoke for more than an hour. I feel that when my time is dictated by someone elses bad, smelly habits it's a complete turnoff....I once had a dinner date get pissed off at me because I wouldn't go outside with her so she could have a smoke, while I was still eating.Go figure that one out.lol......I also don't care how great the sex is, when she comes back to bed smelling like an ashtray because her addiction is greater than wanting to enjoy the company,,,,I know where I stand in line,,,,second behind a cigarette.......Not for me...... | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/12/2006 5:47:23 PM | Damn it, man.... Just Don't smoke... Don't justify it... Don't defend it... Just Don't do it... I don't like it. I don't condone it, & I don't like being around it. I don't see why I or anyone should have to tolerate it. Ignorance just burns my ass, & It is painful. You asked a Question , It's being answered & you want to argue about it... Listen & Learn... Respect what is being said here... It Is ALL TRUE... Cigarettes are Nasty. Smoke a joint instead Peace Lisa | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/12/2006 5:53:49 PM | | I think that everyone is different. I personally don't mind a smoker. I have not ever smoked nor was I raised with smoking parents. But, I can look beyond the smoking. But, I do understand that some people can not deal with it. | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/12/2006 6:34:38 PM | | I don't want to date a smoker either. I want to kiss somebody with fresh breath & not kiss an ashtray. Yet, for some reason, the women who have talked to me at these POF parties have mostly been smokers. If you are looking for a female smoker, I'll glasly give you the names of some I have talked to at POF parties. | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/12/2006 9:48:39 PM | | I dated a smoker once, it really wasn't a problem then because he smoked outside, and infrequently. But beyond a few dates, it might be a problem with kissing, and beiong around second hand smoke. I have asthma, as my young kids do. But if I really like the guy it might work if the smoking was kept to a minimum. | |

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/14/2006 7:35:47 AM | It is possible for non-smokers and smokers to have lasting relationships. I had one for 16 years. It does take a "considerate" smoker to make it work and a "considerate" non-smoker as well.
Here are some tips: 1. Don't smoke inside, ever, and this includes in the car. The smell gets into everything even if you can't notice it. 2. Don't share anything relating to drinks/eating after a smoke. Something as simple as picking up your mates drink after a smoke leaves a smell on it. If you have have to get something for them, use whichever hand you don't hold your smoke in. 3. Don't try kissing after a smoke. Eat a piece of generic nicorette (not the new mint ones) and you will understand what your partner tastes when you kiss them after smoking (yup, the gum tastes like an ashtray). 4. Don't smoke after sex (at least not if you are retireing for the evening afterwards)! You can make a habit of not smoking after sex and you will actually reduce cravings for them after a few times of holding out. Besides, the extra time you spend cuddling and talking is so much more meaningful then the nicotine rush and usually more satisfying also! 5. Wash your hands after you smoke. This helps reduce the "stink" you bring back with you.
That's all I can remember off the top of my head. Feel free if you have other tips on how to please a non-smoker or on being more considerate of them.

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/14/2006 8:27:36 AM | I was married to a non-smoker for 22 years. It is the sort of thing that reasonable people can work out. At the same time, I realize that some people are more sensitive to it than others. For them it is a deal breaker. To each his/her own.
Unfortunately, it seems impossible to have a discussion about the subject without lectures and insults. I suppose the intent is to insult people in order to get them to quit smoking. Sorry folks, it doesn't work that way. The lectures/insults are totally unnecessary, ineffective and just plain rude. Rude is rude, even if it is politically correct rudeness.
BTW, by some odd coincidence I find myself dating a non-smoker once again... and she contacted me first. Go figure.

I do not have a problem with being considerate of non-smokers... but please show me the quid pro quo. Where are the tips on how non-smokers can be more considerate of smokers?

You wanted a smoke-free workplace. The price was the smoke breaks. Now that you have the smoke-free workplace, you don't want to pay the price. You want it all your way. What a considerate person you are... not to mention rude.

| Can a smoker get a date with a non smoker? Posted: 11/15/2006 5:00:36 PM | OP: I have actually found someone on this site that is a non-smoker. She is definitely someone whom I want to spend the rest of my life with. So it is possible to find someone that doesn't care about it.

Laziness is in all people. The laziest person I know is a non-smoker. I currently smoke about a pack a day, and work harder than most people I know. Since I have started smoking, I have never been healthier, weighed this little (before I started I weighed close to 300, currently 170ish and working on dropping it down to 150) or have had so much energy. You do realize there are foods that stain your teeth as well? It's called brushing. If your so worried about picking up the extra load for a smoker's smoke break, join them in the BSing.
As for the addictive factor, people are more addicted to food and water than anything else. The problem isn't so much the nicotine, but more over the act of smoking in of itself. Why do you think so many who try to quit chew gum? Figure out a way to replace putting smoke in the lungs with something more positive and you'd get an unbeatable "cure" for smoking.
