...got the dvd for xmas and had never seen this flick before...what an excellent movie! Martin Scorsese did such an awesome directing job! And the Band themselves, what a bunch of characters they were! What are your opinions on this video???

Oh man.....

"The Last Waltz" is a classic! I've been a major Levon Helm fan since I was a mere pup. He can do no wrong in my eyes. Robbie Robertson's no slouch, either.

I'm glad to see some appreciation for The Band...grew up listening to them, courtesy of my mother and (then) stepfather.

"Virgil, quick come see, there goes Robert E. Lee" - I like to play this on my guitar and sing it, although I sound really bad.

One of my all-time faves, hands down.

Ever see Coal Miner's Daughter? Levon played Loretta Lynn's father in the flick. If you're a fan, you might want to check it out.

Great thread, thanks.

just yesterday I 'stumbled' across Jesse Winchester's first album - a Robbie Robertson/ Levon Helm side project! and, after one listen, it a great find for the collection!

I really enjoy "The Last Waltz", the performances by the Band are top quality, its nice to see a bit of a discussion with the band, and I really enjoyed the performances of Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Ronnie Hawkins, probably one of the best 'rock and roll concert movies' of all time

A great film with some great performances. And let's not forget the late, great Rick Danko!

A few months ago I downloaded that movie and absolutley LOVED it, about a week or two after that I found it on sale somewhere for like $10, so I picked up two copies. By far one of my favourite musical dvds of all time, right up there with "Festival Express". The movie just really helps capture the, for lack of a better word "karma" of The Band. Man, was Neil Young ever coked out of his tree, LOL. Muddy Waters is the cats pyjamas!

Yikes, ....I was at that, ......in Winnipeg.

I love "The Last Waltz", ......I would however, like to hear it without the overdubs, ....the inclusion of which is obvious. Also some of the tunes aren't from that gig, ....well, ....the first one, "Don't Do It", is a dub from another gig (anothe movie, BTW),

The guy that makes me weep when ever I watch that film, is Paul Butterfield, (RIP), the inclusion of Butterfield with Muddy's spot, .....is probably one of the best examples of both men, kickin' out blues as it's 'posed to be.

I was crushed when Richard Manuel commited suicide in '86,

http://theband.hiof.no/band_members/richard.html

....when Rick Danko's heart gave out in '99,

http://theband.hiof.no/band_members/rick.html

....It was another shock.

I have the $9 DVD, ........it sucks ass as far as obvious overdubs are concerned, ... it takes it from being a legit documentation to being nostalgic fluff, ....er, ....by degree. I have wept many times since the '70s watching this film, ......but,

.......I want the directors cut, .....with the raw tracks, etc. if such a thing exists.

Edit:

Hmmmmm..... think I'll watch it again.

(LOL!)

I love the movie. It's all good!

Neil Young supposedly gave up on drugs after seeing the footage of himself performing (he sounds great, but looks incredibly messed up.

By far the BEST rock movie of all time. Joni Mitchell harmonizing behind the curtain to Neil Young's "Helpless" .... yah ... just classic. And so many great performances from beginning to end.

Easily the best concert movie ever produced, there's not a dull moment in it. Like Sweet Virginia said, Joni and Neil on Helpless, Van doing Caravan, and the interviews are so great.

Martin Scorcese hung out at the Fillmore and Winterland for MONTHS selling tickets to that show. He was a little guy 5'2" with more hair on his eyebrows than on his head who held a sign with the poster of the concert on it.

I think the Band and these other groups did it as a benefit to get him started in moviemaking or something. For all the fame they have now, many of the acts weren't that hot at the time and Clapton came unannounced to my recollection.

He would ask people if they wanted tickets as they filed into the building and we'd ask about the show... say Hi to him we saw him so often....

He talked about himself in the third person, like he was just out there working for someone named "Martin Scorcese", but it was actually him... I saw him so many times in the lobby... I knew his face by heart.

I never bought tickets for the show, but I saw the movie years later.......... It was an awesome show.

For those of you yearning for more music from the Band, Levon Helm is still very much alive and kicking, after recovering from cancer.

He put out a CD/DVD combo in 2006 called "The Midnight Ramble Sessions," with a group of blues musicians, recorded at his home studio in Woodstock. Good, solid stuff!
cheers, moxymusic

If you have the new remastered version of the film- Watch Neil Young as he steps up to the mic before "Helpless". He has a HUGE chunk of coke stuck to his nose. For the first few bars the entire band and Neil himself are way out of time. I love the movie, but the new cd box set that came out when the remastered movie did holds a special place in my collection.

This isn't just a video. This is an amazing piece of work by Scorsese. You can keep your Farm Aid and Live Aid and Aid Aid films, 'cause there is no music film ever done like The Last Waltz.
Okay, so maybe the 3 day festival at Yasger's Farm (nothing like Jimi Hendrix playing the anthem) or an extremely wasted Santana.

A film I enjoyed as well, I saw it when it first came out.

I always liked The Band ( Acadian Driftwood.... ) , and that film shows you the difference between music today and then. It's a bunch of people who know one another well having a blast playing together , with mutual respect.

It's also brings back memories of seeing Dylan (circa 1975) with the Rolling Thunder Revue in Quebec City.

I saw Levon Helm in Montreal as well, in a small club.

Makes me really glad to be this old.

I like the part when clapton breaks his strap and robbie starts a guitar duel.

If you like the dvd you will like the CD, its got some extra stuff on it too, like a remake of The Weight, with a band called the Staples, a southern gospel group, and the girl they choose to sing the second verse has an amazing voice, the kind that makes you get all misty.

Great film... I really get a kick out of watching it, and there are soooo many great moments in that film. Joni and Neil doing Helpless, and especially Levon's singing when they did The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

Festival Express is another really good movie with some really great performances by a stellar bunch of groups. A must see as well!

Yeah; it truly is an incredible film. Scorcese did a great job directing it, and he was able to capture the atmosphere of the concert incredibly well.
