I think Fedora is pretty tight. Has a great updating system in it too.

For live disks, Knoppix is the tightest package yet, I just wish they had better native wifi support. Can't for the life of me get it to recognize and use my Belkin G card.

I've been a long time Debian user and am most happy. Anything I use is Debian based like KNOPPIX or Kubuntu. I do play with Slackware (my first install), but I don't do anything serious with it.

I'm downloading the Kubuntu 5.10 installer right now and I'm going to drop it into a spare partition so I can play with KDE 3.5 which won't hit Debian Unstable for a while yet.

I use Libranet, basically based on Debian but with a neat administration tools.

I used to use SuSE

My first distro was RedHat 5.2, on a Compaq AMD K6-2 233 with 32 megs of RAM.

Linux user since 1996

My vote is on Ubuntu. So far I've liked it, but there are some bugs I think need to be fixed...

Running Mandrake 10.1 the last distribution before it went to Mandriva.
Used to play with Red Hat but Mandrake beat it no question.
To bad the Corel Linux never caught on. It was pretty sweet but they dropped it.

I've been running Gentoo for a while.

It's very good if your goal is to learn the operating system, since it does very little hand holding, but the forums and documentation are outstanding. The compile times can get kind of old, though.

You have to be wary of the experimental kernels and over-zealous compile optimizations too; they can be tricky.

I prefer Debian, I been using it for about four years now. I love apt, very easy to install packages.

My training involves Redhat.. yet my fav is OpenBSD
My main shellserver runs OpenBSD 3.7, and uses sendmail and thttpd
The rc.conf configuration is awesome, the ports tree is great, and the make && make install is magic
CPAN for perl works smooth, pf, etc, etc
Thttpd runs slick on OpenBSD, and has about an 8-line configuration file, there's also a throttle.conf so it doesn't hog all my bandwidth
I really like how relatively tight and minimalist OpenBSD is

I use mandrake and red hat..beacause?? beacause I have all what I need in it..I use a lot of esoteric software for things like turning my vinyl LPs into CDs I can take in the car and put my home videos on DVDs, so I tend to stick with the same distributions that the people who write my fave software are willing to support, and that pretty much leaves me in Mandrake and RedHat land. I was intrigued by Gentoo claims of a simple one-disk install and then fetch only what you need so you don't have umpteen text editors installed, but when I tried it, I couldn't get it up to any sort of capability I needed, so I moved on.

That said, it's about time someone came along to spice up the landscape. I've changed my distro several times since my first Linux machine in 1993, each time prompted by not getting what I need with what I had and having some say, Well, just try this one ...

All the dirty politics and obscene profiteering aside, I don't know how the Windows users cope with having only one one size fits all package and then being nickle and dimed in a Death by 1001 distinct vendors for everything else they need. For me, I just add the recommended Easy-URPMI catalogs once, and then just ask for what Ineed and wait while all the required parts are dutifully fetched and installed.

Okay, at the risk of sounding like a fanboy... alright, I'm a fanboy. Debian is the most admin-friendly Linux distro I've had the pleasure of using.

But I've been using it since 2001. Before that: Redhat. I haven't seriously tried to use Redhat since shrike (9), but holy crap did I learn to hate RPMs. I understand that's partially resolved now, but I have no reason to go back... I have next to no problems with Debian's packages and the "Debian Way" (tm) so I'm sticking with it for now.

The first distro I ever used was Slackware, have tested Ubantu and looks promising for desktop use, considering trying out Gentoo, and I'm currently exploring OpenBSD. I've also gotten my hands dirty on Solaris, Irix, and SCO Unixware - all systems (even fiaSCO!) have their good points.

Actually, if I ever get the time, I'm going to try and seriously get to know OpenSolaris... I've also been considering a Solaris certification, but my current job has nothing to do with unix admin work :-)

Typing this from an iBook with MacOS 10.3 running...

Looks like we are all over the map here, and I think its good that there are so many distros out there.

My favorite is Slackware, I am running 10.2 with kernel 2.6.15 and KDE 3.5.1. I like Slack because for one thing it is a free download (2 CD's @ 5 hours each), and also because you can do a lot of picking and choosing of which packages you install. It also appears to be pretty reliable.

You do have to install add-ons manually, the ./configure && make && make install routine. Gets easy once you've done it a few times. A few things, like KDE, are available in binary packages.

Nu West Guy,

Try Ubantu. This forum thread here: http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=142981 seems to indicate that some fiddling may be required to make this card work.

It's a pity not many manufacturers support Linux, so if you have unsupported hardware you have to be prepared to do a bit of poking around.

I like Ubuntu. It's the first one I've tried :-) but then when you're running a Mac, there's not too many distros available to use!

My only gripes with Ubuntu are that you sometimes need to use the command line, and I can't get the sound-in working on my iMac. Hopefully when Dapper comes along everything will be fine.

I've also heard a lot of good things about Puppy Linux, but it's x86-only and I can't get it to work with Bochs :-)

One poster remarked that your preference seems to be all over the field. But there happens to be a ton of distros out there. I prefer Mepis. I have used Kubuntu and Ubuntu and I dislike the very lenghty installation process. I prefer distros based on Debian too. I have used Yoper, Vector, Slax, Klax, DSL, Feather, Movix2, Knoppix, and about 20 other different ones over the years. I even have a Chinese distro or two. As you can see many of the above are Live CDs as well. As you can also see I do not happen to be a fan of the bigger 3 commercially ones

In the end each one of us uses whichever distro we happen to have fun with or whatever makes it convenient for us to use.
At least we do not need to spend $$$$$ for alot of 3rd party stuff. Although I do wish I could create flash movies more conveniently in Linux.

Xandros is a good distribution that has a good installation. It also works great with Windows networks. Good network and hardware support. I haven't upgraded to the latest version yet but have been happy with version 2. There are several different pricing schemes the better ones come with Crossover which will let you run windows applications.

If you don't want to mess around and just have one that works then Linspire http://www.linspire.com is very good. And a fast install.

Also, there is a free one I've been looking at called ubuntu. That means something or other in african I guess. http://www.ubuntu.com/ It's almost as stable as linspire (the old Lindows until MS sued them in europe to force them to spend more money or just take the L out of Lindows!)

Hope it works for you.

I like ubuntu/ gnome because it is simple and I can use it as a desktop pc and I really enjoy apt. I haven't used a windows pc at home since Aug2005. I just like ubuntu hardware support. dropped in sb audigy 1, installed after the reboot. Plug in my ipod and boom it just works.
