| Are you NERD enough? Posted: 12/30/2005 12:56:54 AM | All right people ... here's a brain buster:
Over the last year my RAID controller (Silicon Image 3114R) has eaten 10 (tonight the 11th) drives. I have used RAID0 and RAID1, never outside of a non-RAID suitation. I have a second SATA controller and no drives on any other controller have died.
System Spec Asus P5AD2-E Premium Intel 3.2Ghz CPU 1Gig Corsair DDR2 (667Mhz) ATI AIW X600 PCI-E Video Maxtor 200GB SATA 16MB Cache Drives (x4) Antec TruePower 550W PS Plextor 16x DL DVD Burner LG 52x CDRW 16x DVD
After the 10th drive went, I went to my supplier and RMA'ed EVERY PIECE. Yes ... the whole system has been RMA'd. The CPU, RAM and Plextor DVD burner were tested and returned. Everything else was exchanged for new pieces, this INCLUDES the power supply. All BIOSes are up to date.
This is an OS independant problem, therefore it really doesn't matter that I'm using Windows XP SP2 Retail.
Are you nerd enough to solve my problem, God knows I'm not anymore.

| Are you NERD enough? Posted: 12/30/2005 2:10:19 AM | *sigh*
I put one drive on my second SATA controller which treats them like IDE, and wouldn't you know it. Seem to work. Nice to know I have a RAID controller that eats drives and doesn't work
Safe to say Maxtor Drives + SilImg 3114R + Asus P5AD2-E = Hell?
Opinions? Options? Suggestions?

Swapping CD-ROM IDE cables on the motherboard with the raid controllers usually will make your computer see the sata drives which is more than likely the problem you are having.
RAID 0 is really designed if you are running only 1 hard drive
RAID 1 is designed to run 2 hard drives that are indentical which mirrors the drives
Unless you are running a server you really do not need to run a RAID 1 configuration or RAID 2 and above

| Are you NERD enough? Posted: 12/30/2005 3:16:24 PM | Umm well firstly the idea that raid 0 is to be used for only 1 drive is just stupid im not even going to bother explaining why go read what raid is!
i dont know why you might be having these problems is it a drive in a different place on the controler / place in your box each time? otherwise maybe its a heat thing..
other than that dont know good luck

1) SATA drives are more solid than IDE and have comparable quailties to SCSI, your opinion, in my opinion is erroneous.
2) What the heck does swapping IDE cables with a SATA drive (not that it is even possible) have to do with my RAID0, or 1 Set
3) RAID 0 is a striped set designed for more than one drive, hence RAID the acronym RAID.
4) I do run a server, and I run RAID1 on that server for fault tolerance, even with 50% overhead it's a good idea. on my work station I run RAID0 for performance, no fault tolerance.
I'm sorry sir, but thanks for playing this round. You were not nerd enough. :D

Each time I placed the drives in to my system, then were put on SATA0 and 1 (four channel RAID controller). I never thought about putting them on channel 3 and 4, however one thing I do know is that my second SATA controller (which is an Intel) has never fried a disk in it's life. Problem with that is, no RAID, and why the hell should I settle for a controller that doesn't work. :P
I'm going to get my supplier to give me a P5WD2-E Prem and replace this one. New controller so we'll see how it goes.
Thanks

| Are you NERD enough? Posted: 12/30/2005 5:17:22 PM | I myself with my MSI motherboard have never ran across this issue with RAID, but I have read similair issues that you are having from other people in the past.
Sounds to me like it could be your either your motherboard or one of your SATA hard drives itself that is causing the rest to fail.
ATA has that same problem when a corruptive device is on it even if it's not on the same IDE cable. I had a faulty CD-Rom drive a while back and it caused it damaged my hard drive with bad sectors that wern't repairable.
So i'm narrowing it down to 2 things. it's either the motherboard or another SATA hard drive.

Hard drives have been RMAd multiple times ... most times it's two fresh ones (11 hard drives eaten over the year) ... I'm putting my money down on the controller
Thanks :D | |
