Okay, here's my situation...

I am 37, female, 5'8". I am trying to lose 100 pounds, not proud to admit that...yikes!
I am going to the gym and so far have lost 23, so it's gotten me pumped. I have heard a bit about Hydroxycut and it seems to be a popular weight loss aid. I would love to get the opinions of people who have tried it and had success. I want to lose weight the healthy way, but use a supplement, such as Hydroxycut, to assist in the whole process.

If someone has other suggestions for supplements or something that has given them success, I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks

If you are interested in thermogenic supplements aka far burners which increase your core temperature and cause your body to burn fat than the best one is Zantrex III in the blue bottle. It is pricey at health food stores (up to $70). Walmart sells it for $40 and it works well. However, if you use any of them too long they stop working. As well, you can't starve yourself or your body will stop burning calories because it thinks you are starving.

I can tell you the Dr. Bernstein's radical program of B vitamin shots (in the ass) and ultra low calorie diet will have you dropping pounds faster than you can imagine but he is very pricey.

I personally have been on a weight loss expedition for about 3 years. The only pill I tried was "Cuts" which in my opinion, wasn't worth the small fortune I spent on it. From experience I can tell you, just get hardcore addicted to the gym and eat better foods. A lot of 'low fat' foods have tonnes of calories. Be careful of those. They say that if you burn 500 calories at the gym per day and improve your eating habits you WILL lose weight. Also, try green tea, it's good for increasing your metabolism and for other stuff like your hair:)
I've went a bit off topic, but I'm just thinking maybe you should avoid using the pills. I've heard a lot of horror stories about them, where a lot of them increase your heart rate, etc. Keep up with the good work (23 pounds, yay!), but don't get discouraged. Plus, once you get off the pills, sometimes the weight will pile back on.

I've said this before in alot of posts but I'll say it again. With proper diet and exercise you do not need any pills to burn fat and loose weight. You lost 23 already thats great just keep going and it'll continiue as long as you watch your eating and exercise consistently. I have personally tried ripped fuel, hydroxcut and a few others and never noticed any added benefit from taking a pill. Yeah it increase your temp and yeah it'll speed up your metabolism for a short time but IMO it's not the best and healthiest way to do it. Like it was said earlier you can't use these all the time because your body develops a tolerance to them just like it does any drugs. So you have to cycle a few weeks on and a few off. Also, the long term studies haven't had time to show whether or not the stuff in there is safe. You really don't know what artificially speeding up your metabolism does in the long run. You know another way to speed up your metabolism? Eat. thats right. good old fashion food is also thermogenic and if you eat 6 small meals a day right there is a boost in metabolism naturally. And weight training jump starts your metabolism and elevates it for hours after the workout. If you train with weights, do cardio and eat good you'll lose the weight without draining your wallet and adding more to the billions the diet pill makers make everyear. Amen!

eldubu- Hey there! Congratulations on your weight loss, I applaude you I have used hydroxycut whilst on a very strict diet and hard core, 3hr a day training regime. I can tell you now that it is a huge waste of money. Carnitine is another supplement which is similar to hydroxycut but alas that was ineffective also. I found Spirulina tablets a great help with energy. After a great deal of trial and error I discovered that training first thing in the morning was most effective because your body uses your fat stores for energy rather than the food you consumed prior to exercise. The first call of the day after training (before breakfast) is a juice (freshly juiced) consisting of carrot, beetroot, ginger (small amount) and celery - add strawberries or pears to taste if you like. The high carb content of the carrot will replace the energy lost from training (it has a low GI load) and give you a boost for the day, also the beetroot and ginger cleanse any toxins from your body, great for your skin and eyes. Have 5-6 small meals a day and no carbs after 6pm (this will also increase your metabloisms rate). I cant believe I gave away my secret juice recipe!!!!!!!! One last piece of advice is change your training activities around and try to do something different each time you train - if you continue to do the same type of training your weight loss will plateu, so work different muscles all the time and the change will also make exercise more interesting for you. Anyway, goodluck in your endevours and if you need any help feel free to email me.
(Im a Boxing Coach and Gym Instructor). CONGRATULATIONS - KEEP IT UP MATE!!!

Hydroxycut was good when it had ephadrine in it, most of the fat burners are rather watered down now adays since its been taken out. They do provide you with a bit of energy so definiely allows you to work out a little longer and a little harder...if you haven't already, start drinking alot more green tea, its a natural thermogenic...it will be a nice supplement to your fitness goals

Everyone else has provided good advice in regards to nutrition so I will not really add.

Good luck, so far so good!

I agree with the comments made by jpitalian on this topic.

I also have some inside information that many of you may not be aware of. Because of my profession I have had the opportunity to meet various people in the supplement and fitness industry. One person I met who was working for a particular supplement company left and went to work for Muscletech. His direct comments were that this company was a huge Marketing Machine and their products were mediocre at best.

Also, you know all the models in the before and after photos? Well there is one of the Muscletech male models who is from here in Edmonton. The beginning photo was taken the first day of his contest diet, (I worked with his trainers for 4 years), and they then took pics as they were dieting him for his contest. The final pic was taken just before the Bodybuilding show. The transformation was done with food and cardio, not some thermogenics. It is funny because the same trainers worked with half a dozen various models posing in the muscle magazines in preparation for contests and the stories are all the same.

Another thing these companies will do is attend figure, fitness and bodybuilding shows to find someone to be their model. They will then take photos of them on the contest day then feed them food and photo them as they get bigger. They then use the photos in reverse and market the subject went from overweight to ripped in 12 weeks.

I guess I'm saying be very careful of the marketing efforts of the supplement companies. I'm not saying the products don't work but the models can accomplish the same goals with just basic food and exercise.

congrats johnny! that has to be one of the most honest and straight foward comments I have ever heard from someone in the fitness/supplement industry. In the end its a business so no company is going to pay for a commercial and say "yeah you can take our diet pill and lose weight or if you want, just go eat some tuna, flaxseeds and yams. either way you'll look the same" lol. seriously JB, great post.... ...btw I'm not just saying that cause you agreed with me LOL

I lost 12 pounds altogether, and the rest of the pills are somewhere in my vanity. So it works ..Well it did for me .. for a little while ..and I didn't really exercise .. just ran on the treadmill.Could work better for you though!

Well, everyone, thanks so much for the great advice and tips. I talked to my doctor today and he told me that I CAN'T use Hydroxycut or similar products because of another medication that I am on. He told me that he has seen a number of problems with this product as well. I am going to stick to the old tried and true, and keep going to the gym and trying to eat better!
At this time next year, I AM going to be in a bikini and feeling good!

I agree with cdnsmoothy....

Dr. Bernstein's program is unbelievable. I have known 3 women personally who are on it and are now on maintenace...the first part of the program you cannot eat starch.......no potatoes, no pasta, no bread. It is basically chicken, chicken, chicken and veggies.but I am telling you it works. I have seen it first hand and eahc one lost between 80 and 100 pounds..but it is very very expensive....but all 3 said it was worth every dime...dollar..hundreds of dollars......

it is very motivating to see the pounds melt away quickly, if you follow it, and I think that is the motivation for spending all that money. He teaches you how to eat properly for the rest of your life, if you choose to follow it. Also the needles are put right where you want to loose the fat.....it works......

best of luck to you

I agree with jp and spunk. Nothing can replace working out. Depending on your diet, you may want protien supplements, but I never did get into the miracle pills. 10 years ago I was below 10% body fat. A few unrelated injuries have kept me out of the gym since, and I miss the feeling I had when I was addicted to the gym. One other thing to remember, the scale is not the true indicator on your progress, especially if working out includes weights. Muscle is heavier than fat. Go by how your clothes fit, how you look and even body fat measurements.
Good luck!

I agree completely that diet and exercise are not something that can be replaced by a pill but...

The ECA products work, and they work well. Pro athletes gobble them like candy, recreational athletes use them constantly, and amateur athletes use them whe they think they can get away from it.

Everyone has to decid for themselves if that is the route they want to take, but they sure do work.

Dr Bertein's diet is expensive...sadly you can buy the B-12 and the needles for wayyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper than he charges per dose.....
As many people have lost weight on his program..many have gained it back............Following a healthy lifestyle and working out.. is just as effective, measuring portons helps alot tooo.
By the way the B-12 is like 10 bucks for 6 doses and the needles 5 bucks for 6 sold at the local pharmacy....I inquired............

Dr. B - is a very successful dietician. His plan will work for anyone but a lot of people get on edge saying that it's basically a starvation diet. It's not. It's a "limit your intake" diet. I've had some friends who had very successful results from his plan.

Hydroxycut, is something I'm more familiar with on a personal level, as I take it upon the reccomondation of my personal trainer. I use it alongside a very strict nutritional plan and regular weight training. I've lost almost 50 lbs in six months - although, not due just to the Hydroxycut. That's best taken on a cyclical basis - eight weeks on, two off.

The only things I can say are downsides are that there is so much caffeine in them that you get a little jumpy at first. I had to start drinking decaf because my eyes twitched *LoL* And you can sometimes get some nasty abdominal pain - but that's cured with lots and lots and lots of water.

Good luck!

as far as all the fat burners go they do work to some extent as long as you can handle the shakes and feeling of uneasyness which i eventually got tired of, best way to prevent the fat in the first place is to eat foods that will not cause radical fluctuations with your insulin levels, buy some books on performance nutrition and diabetic nutrition which should greatly help you, as far as taking the fat off controlling insulin levels is also one of your first steps.
i honestly don't know much about the Bernstein program but if he gives b12 shots i bet he charges a ton when you can buy it over the counter for 12 bucks for a 20 ml bottle, i used to take a CC every week and it's water soluble so don't worry about over dosing, i've heard about those life extensionist people taking thousands of milligrams with no ill effects but you honestly need more than a few CC's a week i'd imagine you're already in very poor health.
you can also adding a few tablespoons of Lecithin to your diet several times a day and Apple cider vinegar as well which are known for their fat loss effects, but the best way to lose the fat is just being consistant.

I am very athletic. Work out steady.....
I think it great that you want to improve your lifestyle.:) Training is GREAT. I go everyday.
The best thing I can really tell you. From personal experience is weights before cardio. That way you are already in "Fat burning mode". Eat like 5 to 6 small meals. High protien low fat little carbs. Eat first thing in the morning. Gets your metabolism started. Eat eaver 3 to 4 hours that way its always going. Protien shakes and a banana are the best after a workout.
Not just the protien but the ingredients in the shakes hepl repair the muscle tissues just worked on.
As for fat burners.......hydroxycut is good there are also so much out there you might wanna try. Go to something like GNC. health stores look for other things you can take as well that will work alot better then hydroxycut....just ask the receptionist and tell them your goals.
You might wanna look into a Personal trainer. just to show you the proper form. Its not how much you lift but on how you do things as well.....
Hope this helps you out a little and good luck.

I dunno I have yet to find a pill that really makes much of a darn difference. Metabolife with ephedrine used to give me a kick of energy but DIET AND EXCERISE is what makes you lose the weight. All the pill labels say the same thing "COMBINED WITH DIET AND EXCERISE"
I used hydroxy-cut and really it was one of the worst I have tried.

The best way to loss weight is to eat protein, dark green, red, yellow, and orange veggies,no fried foods, no junk food and smaller portions.

Drink lots of water, take vitamins and excerise. If you don't want to go to a gym, then a good long walk every day or every other day, will help you to burn off the calories.

Don't be in a rush to loose weight. If you change how you eat and excerise the weight will start to come off, bit by bit.
It's much healthier to loose weight slowly than to rush it.

When I am grocery shopping I look at the list of ingrediants on the back of the package and if it's way too long a list with names I cannot understand, then I don't buy it.

About a year and a half ago, I changed up my diet, started excersising and a year later I was 40 pounds lighter.

I am at my perfect weight now and I've been able to maintain my weight with no problems.

B12 can be purchased in pill form at a health food store or a pharmacy.

If you get hungry in between meals, munch on some veggies or fruit and drink water.

Green tea is also a good drink to help with the loosing weight process.

I think the best way to loose weight and maintain your proper weight is to make a change in your eating habits and put your money in real and good foods, stay away from restaurants and take your time!

Most people who loose weight too fast, end up putting it back on within a year or so.

Some of you People are truly Nuts .....Any Pills Used to lose weight will hurt you Period ....Why Not just Buy some Crack Or Coke and snort it .....You will lose weight on these drugs too !!

As I tell My Friends that have Problems with Weight .......Shut the Hole ....Learn to eat properly ....Don't assume if you exercise alittle you deserve a treat ....Don't Starve yourself ...when doing that you go into starvation mode and your body holds fat ....Like above some people have it right on ...Exercise . Eat Properly. Vitamins a must . If you dont know what to take drink an Ensure many hospitals use to it treat elderly and sickly patients so it will work for you too

A great source of concentrated calories. High-protein drink helps patients gain or maintain healthy weight. Lactose free and gluten free. For supplemental oral nutrition. Choose vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan, or coffee. 355 calories/8-ounce can.

these work and taste good

Going to restaurants avoid them if you don't know how to eat and MUST LICK YOUR Plate you ate to much...Eating healthy is more expensive than eating junk...so be prepared for that and follow the main rule if it tastes good it will make you fat ....Avoid most contiments ...Salt ...Use substitude for some ....Your on the internet use it there is so much information on here that will help....If it sounds to easy it is therefore untrue....Even the skinny people and Muscular people have to work on it and avoid some great restaurant food ...You think theres a reason ........

Lipodrene, I have heard that works great. I am starting that as soon as it comes in the mail. Found it online and it still has ephedrine in it.
