| TV Documentaries..commercials, content.and comments. Posted: 1/11/2006 6:38:24 PM | Having recently acquired a satellite, I was looking forward to enjoying a 'continuing education' with the various documentary channels available.
However..was I dissapointed!
Not only do they follow the same format as the 'entertainment for the masses' channels, including the same inane level of intelligence appeal in the commercials, interrupting at about 10 minute intervals, but they run the program into them in a seamless manner, so that at times you are into the first one before you realise it has nothing to do with what you were just watching!
Surely they could have designed educational programs to have fewer breaks..I realize they have to fund the channel, but would it have hurt them to have made the breaks fewer and longer (ie at the beginning and end as I believe is done in some European countries?)
Not only that..but upon returning to any North American made documentary..they proceed to spend most of the next segment recapping on the segment previously shown
Good grief! Is the North American attention span so short as to need a full recap of 10 minutes viewing redone after a 4 minute break?
You can really notice the difference between those made here and those from UK on this point alone.
And what is with the 'flash flash flash' repetition of scenes..along the lines of music videos? Is this the only way images can be imprinted into the North American mind?
Frankly it smacks of the 'subliminal' approach used in commercials that was unearthed and supposedly banned back in the 70's, and I find it distracting myself.
After many years on an antenna that only pulled in TVO..the non-commercial public station..and being subjected to commercialism again..it isn't hard to understand why there's an obesity problem over here..every break is full of food and drink ads..and do women USE that many different beauty aids and cosmetics nowadays?
Any comments people..are have you lived with this for so long you don't notice it? | |
