I am looking to continue my reading career (mostly cause I don't have a dating career) and would really like to know people's favorite books. I am into everything (intellectually) and have a large Chapters budget that I wish to start using up. Here's a list of a few I have read lately that I Liked

A Brief History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson

A Heartbreaking work of staggering genius - Dave Eggers

A Million Little Pieces (still reading) - James Frey

The Corporation - Joel Bakan

If this is a post that has already been done, forgive me. I have sinned.

I'd like to read books even just to have something to talk about with other people on here. I find I can only talk about myself for so long (not due to lack of ego, but more lack of accomplishment / interest) nor can I talk about girls that I like but probably won't date me. Let me know what ya like, and for any intellectualish types, I'm well enough read to have an ignorant opinion on most topics. Sometimes not completely ignorant though

I don't have specific favorite books

but "type" of books yes

I read "true crime" novels, I've always been interested in how the minds of killers work....

my mom used to say I should try to get into criminal psychology but I just dont' want to go to school for that long.....so I just keep reading the books haha

Ah yes.. I did over two years in criminology / psychology in university. I have read enough about how those minds work I guess. I will read about the occasional nut case still just to feel better about myself. Sure, my tires on my car need replacing, but buddy turned 12 people into lampshades. I'm fine. :)

Now I can resume my usual reading fodder.

I am starved for another diana gibaldron book, drums of autumn was the first in the series.
Excellent writer, a little bit of fantasy, romance, history and enough real life circumstances to keep me busy. Anyone else a fan of her work?
I hear that she is coming out with a new book in the series and I cant wait.

Amongst the others the illiad, the divine comedy....i am a big fan of the classics. paradise lost, beowulf, the republic, Ovid, catch 22... But mainly into alot of philosophy..

My book club is reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini this month. It's not a book that I would have normally read but that's the whole idea of joining a book club. It's excellent & I can't put it down.

Other recent faves:

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Dress Your Children in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris
Dry by Augusten Burroughs (for those who like A Million Little Pieces)

I tend to read humour & mysteries, so it's good to get into other genres.

I just finished A million Little Pieces- James Frey and thought it was amazing
I absolutely loved Life of Pi- Yann Martel
But I have to say my all time fave is still I know this much is true- Wally Lamb.
But I am the kind of girl that will read anything. I love British humor- like Marian Keyes for light reading.

The last book that i finished reading was Bill Bryson "A Short History of Nearly Everything" and another book called the "The Historian"

I have a few other books on the go, including "Shake Hands with the Devil" and "Your Call is Important to Us, the Truth about Bullshit"

For light reading, i like the Dan Brown books or the basic chick lit that you can shut your brain off for a couple hours, or some travel stories. a good one is "Long Way Around" by Ewan McGregor and some other actor dude or "Round Ireland with a Fridge"

My favourite author is John Irving. His books are amazing and have so much symbolism and meaning if you can get past the few dry parts near the beginning. If anyone wants to read a great book try "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by Irving. It's not his most popular (he has a couple that have been made into movies) but it is definitely his best, in my opinion!

Hey Hobbes, I have read many of the books you have it seems. I'm big into the classics and have read a huge amount of philosophy (only liked a small portion of it.. depressing shi* at times*.

In classics I go with

Shakespeare - Four main tragedies particularly
Inferno - Dante
Bible (as literature)... (Ecclesiastes, Job, the Gospels particularly)
and on and on.. :)

and a new book called Viva La Repartee - for those of us who want to have that amazing comeback ready when the opportunity presents itself...

Do comic books count?

I like Michael Crichton (sp?) and Tom Clancy for their writing style and involved storylines. At the moment I am reading Dan Brown's Angels and Demons, and it is a good book so far.
