Quick Canned Reply Feature?
Posted: 1/21/2006 6:04:17 PM
I saw a feature on another site, email reply boxes come equipped with a template of responses..... "I'm not dating right now", "sorry, you aren't my type", and so forth. Basically canned polite rejections.

It could reduce some of the "I got read/deleted" whining we get in the forums ad nauseum.

Personally, I'd love to see "go away, your breath stinks", "I don't do morons", and "you've GOT to be kidding me?"

You can also do this by assigning text to a key command, or a keyboard or track-ball/mouse button.

(at least, you can on a Mac)

Tons of freebie 'Clipboard Utilities' out there that pretty well do the same under Windows.

I'm with you, Pandy. This would not only save the forums from being flooded with "Nice Guy, No Reply" threads, but it would save people from having to think up a an excuse for declining. I'd be all for including both rude and polite rejections, such as:
-Thanks but no thanks
-I'm not dating right now
-I'd rather put pins in my eyes
-Sorry, I'm thinking about entering a convent
-You're too good for me
-Don't make me MACE you
-I couldn't possibly measure up to your perfect mother
-Sorry, I don't date men who like me

I don't really see how. You would just get "Nice guy, snotty-canned-reply" threads. Speaking as a "nice guy" who's success rate with this site is a big fat goose-egg (I only keep my profile on here on the off-chance someone MIGHT actually give me 1/2 a chance), I know it would hurt me just as much seeing an obviously generic reply, even if it is polite, just as much as it does seeing "read deleted" or "unread delete" with no reply. The guys who bother to post about it on the forums would still post on the forums. In substance, you're doing the exact same thing to them. They aren't bothered by the lack of reply, but by the fact that you can't even be bothered to talk to them a couple of times prior to your rejection.

wow...great idea. I can add a few to that:

-sorry. Whiners irritate me
-sorry. I'm going to be busy getting an ingrown toenail installed
-sorry. My internet service is down
-sorry. But, reading your profile just turned me gay
-sorry. I only date within my own species
-sorry. But, I don't do the distance thing. You're way to close.
-sorry. I'm only here to collect the frequent flyer miles
-sorry. If I drank enough booze to be seen with you I'd pass out
-sorry. The magic 8 ball said "try again"
-sorry. You look like my ex. YIKES!

Why not just have one button that you can store your own message in? That way, you can personalize your own auto-response. If you want to be polite and give someone a "good" response that you're not interested, you can, or if you want to be a rude/insulting and use the responses people have offered in here, you can do that too.

And don't worry "mcmi6511", the ones that complain about "nice guy whiners" are usually too shallow and self-involved to understand the true reason why those guys complain. They are usually the ones that wind up with losers in the end because of how they choose/treat people to be with, and then even they complain about why they always find losers! They are no better or worse than you are. Just keep that in mind. :-) And "happy fishing" , you will find someone that appreciates "you" soon enough!

dude, my comments were tongue in cheek. I have never responded rudely to a contact who wasn't rude to me first.

Ticket,Late... I know that such programs can be found, I use them, and keep templates on my desktop as well, ....but a large percentage of POF forum users can't operate something as simple as the search tool....God forbid they have to go looking for tools out on the internet

Admin has pointed out on a couple of occasions that anything more than a single click is far more energy than the average user is willing to expend. I just think something like this would eliminate a lot of the gripes we have to deal with.

This thread deals with "canned" replies - the new feature implemented is just another form of reply without any preset replies.

Post or read here, on this very forum page: New Feature :Send Quick Message

While anyone can use cut-and-paste to send a caned reply from a list in a text-editor window, or kept in their clipboard buffer, IF PoF implemented a canned-reply feature I'd hope it didn't include any snide, superior or insulting ones. Sending messages for months without getting any responses is soul-destroying enough for most among us... at least, the straight males.

Ed it is not going to happen here any more then winks will be reinstated. It just doesnt work well on a site this large. If someone can't string a few coherent sentences together without basing their message on a canned pre-made response then they have no business messaging. We have enough problems with guys spamming out 50 messages a day to woman that say nothing now. I doubt the Admin wants to enable anymore chaos in that area.
