| Conservatives win canada after lucky 13 Posted: 1/24/2006 8:16:23 AM | Ahhh...but it is a minority gov't...again...so..within 18 months we'll be back at the polls probably! They can't do a thing unless they have the backing and support of another party...which means we Canadians probably won't have new taxes forced down our throats. Conservative views will NOT be the "law of the land" unless they are supported by others...which is good! Wonder who will lead the Liberals next go around? I see the Bloc did not get everything they wanted either...the riding I am in went Conservative. I didn't vote for them though....(total disclaimer for when the sh*t hits the fan!) | |

| Conservatives win canada after lucky 13 Posted: 1/24/2006 8:38:18 AM | | Word is that the American administration is quietly happy with this outcome, so even if you don't like Harper this is good for Canada. We benefited when Chretien and Clinton genuinely liked each other and Bush tends to work off his gut rather than intellect more than Clinton did. | |

Bush has polarized the states politically and isolated the country internationally. Harper was also the one that wanted to send Canadian troops to Iraq. I'm just thankful that with a minority government, there's a chance that we won't be governed from the south.
I wonder when George Bush snaps his finger and tells Harper to jump; will he also tell him where to land?

| Conservatives win canada after lucky 13 Posted: 1/24/2006 4:23:41 PM | i really don't think the conservatives did win. they may have the leader who will be the next pm but they can't pass anything without the support of either the liberals or the bloc and ndp. harper better be great at consensus building b/c right now, ideologically, none of the other parties really subscribe to his 5 priorities or to the socially conservative agenda.
i think the bush administration can't be overly happy with the result either - harper won't be able to sell out to the us without getting huge concessions from the other parties which is very unlikely given the liberal, bloc or ndp stance on american foreign and trade policy.
frankly, i think that every party lost last night: 1) the conservatives didn't get the majority as they wanted so no clear mandate to govern canada 2) the liberals lost their minority gov't 3) the bloc lost seats to the conservatives 4) the ndp doesn't have enough seats to make a coalition with the pcs so they are no longer the "king maker"
and i think that canadians didn't so much give conservatives a "win" so much as they ousted the liberals. canadians seem to always vote a gov't out more so than voting a gov't in.

Seriously... has our government really changed in any other capacity other then sticking "Prime Minister" infront of someone elses name? The balance of power didn't shift, it lightly burped.

| Conservatives win canada after lucky 13 Posted: 1/24/2006 8:01:26 PM | Yes! Finally we can get control of government spending, work on showing this multi-cultural country who Canadians are, and legalize marijuana creating a huge form of tax, rather than our salaries, homes etc. So what if it is only a minority, it is a start, minority governments are best as it keeps them on their toes. We do not want a dictatorship! | |

| Conservatives win canada after lucky 13 Posted: 1/24/2006 8:34:32 PM | The political system that we have doesn't work.....it only will when the number of seats for each party reflects the percentage of the popular vote....
Hypothetically, and I know I'm reaching, a party could lose every single riding by a vote or two and end up with no representation in Parliament...
Minority goverments don't work either...they are paralyzed by the continuous deal making necessary to make it work....
And last but not least....not all the political ideas are represented in the spectrum of parties that contest the elections...

| Conservatives win canada after lucky 13 Posted: 1/24/2006 11:39:48 PM | I agree with the statement. And to add to it : I will always keep in the back of my mind what was said in the english debate, which all party leaders agreed apon: equal representation has to be revisited. The current system is old , and showing its age each passing election. For a guy that lives in Calgary , I am getting sick about hearing about what Ottawa did and how Western Canada is not being noticed. (I hope that dies now that the Conseratives are in )
I never thought that way, and I hope the west chanting stops.
