To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222 It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years.

| protect yourself from telemarketers Posted: 1/24/2006 12:41:09 PM | You can call the number and opt out, but your cell number is not going to be given out to telemarketers anyway. I can't stand telemarketers. If they call, I tell them to hold on for a minute and set the phone down and walk away and not come back to it. | |

Because it is becoming more and more available for people to shift their old phone numbers to their new cell phones (this includes swapping from a home LAN line), telemarketing firms may already have your number. If this number wasn't registered before, then it may be a good time to register it now.
Unfortunately, there are two types of telemarketers that are not effected by this list. It doesn't affect automatic sequential dialing systems, the kind that play recorded messages. We're working on a solution for these guys. It involves Uzis. And it doesn't affect annoying local small fry, few of whom participate in national name-removal programs. Many politicians don't participate either.
Invoke the power of the federal government. OK, it's not the FBI, but the Federal Trade Commission did promulgate a Telemarketing Sales Rule effective December 31, 1995. Among other things this rule requires all telemarketers to keep an "in-house suppress list." If telemarketers call you, you can demand that they add your name to their suppress lists, commonly referred to as do-not-call lists, and never bug you again.
I've tried this a time or two and it seems to work. Should the SOBs call again, though, get the caller's name, company name, and address (or at least as much information as you can--feign interest in whatever they're flogging and wheedle it out of the **stards). Then report 'em to the FTC, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Washington, D.C. 20580. Include the time and date of the call(s) and other details. | |

| protect yourself from telemarketers Posted: 9/4/2006 8:33:34 AM | when the phone company called me to ask if i wanted long distance service on my home telephone line, i told them the line was used only for computer internet dialup and i didnt need long distance on it. since then (10 years) i've never got a telemarketing call from anyone. you could also tell them your line is a fax line, and they got through because its being repaired. jerry | |
