| WTF Posted: 2/1/2006 10:27:43 PM | So are most words involved in trying to con someone into sending you their banking information.
It's an anti-scammer step that Admin put into play quite some time ago.

| WTF Posted: 2/2/2006 6:34:00 AM | i found it funny that "transit" was blocked out once during an IM exchange, i was talking about taking the transit system, ie the subway...
edit: hmmm, isn't blanked out now, maybe it was just in IM?
|
| WTF Posted: 2/2/2006 12:32:14 PM | "Transit", used as "Transit Number", another term used in Banking dealing with Bank Accounts and Money Transfers.

| WTF Posted: 2/2/2006 5:32:29 PM | Why not just block IM all together?
Seriously, people need to be on the lookout for scams to begin with, and most of them can be spotted a mile away. Anyone giving bank info to a stranger online is pretty gullible to begin with, and censoring common words isn't really going to help all that much.
A fool and his (or her) money will soon be parted, IM or not!

| WTF Posted: 2/2/2006 5:44:30 PM | Why not just block IM all together?
Because, many people use it responsibly.

| WTF Posted: 2/2/2006 7:38:12 PM | Anyone giving bank info to a stranger online is pretty gullible to begin with, and censoring common words isn't really going to help all that much. It does deter Fraud substantially, as people come in here asking why certain Words are blocked out.
| When a Conman asks for Banking Info, his Communications are being hampered, he can't get his Instructions across without causing the Recipient to wonder what is going on.
Gullible or not, a Con Job will be obstructed. |

| WTF Posted: 2/2/2006 11:43:40 PM | I highly doubt a single POF con over IM has been thwarted because a few key words have been censored.
Do you really think that anyone dumb enough to give their banking info over IM to a stranger is going to be saved that easily?
|
| WTF Posted: 2/3/2006 3:32:18 AM | | is there a "keyword" glossary so that we can resposibly use the IM without retyping words over and over until we find one that isn't blocked. Makes you want give up on IM and just use emailing, even tho its longer, its less frustrating | |
|
| WTF Posted: 2/3/2006 10:30:54 AM | | Bank | Transfer | Wire | | Account | Transit | Deposit |
... are the most common ones ... even if these formats of characters are part of another word, they are often blotched out as well.
Do you really think that anyone dumb enough to give their banking info over IM to a stranger is going to be saved that easily?
| As I mentioned above, People have inquired about it after having been on Instant Messenger with someone they did not know. Whatever is doubted, Facts say otherwise. |

| WTF Posted: 2/3/2006 11:58:07 AM | Even gullible and dumb people can learn things mojo_LA.
And if it takes a query about why a word is blocked for someone to ask the question that will show them that they're about to get conned, it's worth it.
Just because someone isn't as internet savvy as you doesn't mean they deserve to be gouged for all they're worth - or that they don't deserve to learn to avoid such traps in the first place.
You were naive once too, so let it go, okay?

Do you really think that anyone dumb enough to give their banking info over IM to a stranger is going to be saved that easily? you'd be surprised what cons are able to get naive people to do over the internet. The fact is, they admin wouldn't have entertained the notion if complaints had not been brought to his attention.
Now, if only he'd do something about those Russian women that want to come to North America and 'steal' all our men

| Sometimes it happens. Posted: 2/3/2006 1:44:10 PM | When Ebay first got going a few years back, I recieved an official "looking" email asking me to confirm sensitive material. This was when I was new to the internet and as soon as I hit send, I had misgivings.
It happens. | |
