| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 6:10:03 AM | A friend of mine is trying to get me to get a handle on this concept -- I would like to share my understanding and see what you all think.
I used to think that love was the ability to care about someone in such a way that you would "lay down your life" (whether figuratively or literally) for that person. I still believe that to be the case; HOWEVER, true love is the ability to "lay down your life" to preserve the relationship that you and your partner are building together.
Then along these lines: love can be freely given, true love is earned and discovered.

|
| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 6:43:03 AM | I don't have children.I do have a wonderful loving family and 2 best friends in the universe i'd do anything for.True love yes.
As for the love of a man,i had it,it ended.I loved him truly. It felt so right.I'm not sure if i can define it.I think i love too much.Too deeply and i open myself up for hurt and pain.Caution is the way to go.Some of us aren't meant to have true love from a partner. Why do you have to wait till your heart breaks to know you loved.Seems pointless.

That would be brotherly love but in romantic love it is this plus a physical connection that connects the mind, heart, spirit and bodies into one.

| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 8:32:40 AM | Every person will give you a different meaning of love or true love. That is the beauty of it!
There isn't one defined meaning to all, for everyones views, hopes, dreams, passions and so forth are unique in its own, as should love be.
Don't go by what someone views or defines love to them, go by what you know and feel within yourself, and between the other you feel for, and you won't go wrong, you now it will then be true. And remember, there's no guarantees in life when growth is always in the mix.
Some people grow stronger, some grow apart, doesn't mean the love wasn't there, no matter who it is.....

Selflessly, unconditionally, whole heartedly ...because we want to.

Maybe it's not that "love can be freely given" rather it is that "attention can be freely given".
As to "true love is earned and discovered"? How? Say a parent loves a child, that is true love, the child didn't have to earn it, it is given unconditionally but maybe the child didn't know about the parent's love and later come to discover it when indeed a life is laid down....
I think if 'true love is earned", it is no longer true love, it is conditional love.

| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 10:48:46 AM | | I asked my grandad once how he knew he was in love, and his simple answer was "when I knew she was my sunrise and sunset, cuz ain't nothing in this universe more beautiful than those two things". Kind of stuck with me that yep, that's what it is | |

| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 10:52:02 AM | | Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things; believes all things; hopes all things; endures all things. | |

| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 12:33:37 PM | Love is something best left undefined. It's a unique experience for each person. And usually when you try to convey in words the experience, words fail you every time. Just enjoy it... don't quantify it. | |

| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 12:51:47 PM | I guess I define true love and unconditional love differently....
true love I could feel for a SO....unconditional love is something I can only give to my children, parents, and siblings.
It probably sounds terrible, BUT, I can only truly love a SO if they don't do things that cause me pain. Does that make sense?
Awwww, heck, I confuse myself sometimes.
|
| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 2:05:57 PM | I've once written an entire essay on true love, but I'll give you the shorter equation of it:
True love < > unconditional love, (where Unconditional love is something that even dog can give.); True love = love for every inch of you, excluding nothing. It's the kind of love that even the most elusive or repulsive part of yourself will be able to receive from your lover.

| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 2:12:35 PM | Yeah - I'd agree with that...
I've often felt very strongly about people - to the point where I would do anything for them - but they just haven't returned the feeling... I hate it when people devalue this by describing it as just a crush...
|
| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 2:32:39 PM | True love unconditional love, (where Unconditional love is something that even dog can give.);
Hmmm… but dogs don’t give love (i.e a dog will do what it's trained to do or what comes natural to it), its the owner that gives love, so unconditional love can’t apply to a dog.

| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 6:43:51 PM | Love is turned upside down, backwards and occasionally sideways. Love is mentioned more then once, numerous ways and sorts. Love is deaf and seldom heard in county court. Love is flirting, but never philandering. Love makes things brew. Coffee pots must be re-classified. Love is full of games and never a game. Love is a surprise the first time. Love is a surprise all the time. Love is told in tales and trills. Lies, cries, and flies, we all had our fills. Love is the King of Hearts and The Queen too. Love is contagious, we know, a foreign flu. Love is confused with borders, boundaries, and the breaking heart. Love is where all roads, rails and red arteries start. Love constantly tinkers, taunts, tugs, and sometimes tickles. Love is not a calendar day, a week, a month or year. Love is counted in seconds, pulses and prayer. | |
|
| True love defined Posted: 2/3/2006 6:45:21 PM | You can really "love" just about anyone...
If love is respect and caring...what is True Love? Is it not the same...?
Love is what's left over after "being in love" is gone...
