| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 4:54:00 PM | Anyone here go to the gym on a regular basis? Do you go by yourself or go with a group of people? What kind of routine do you do? One muscle group a day or a couple different ones?
I've been going for about a year and 3 months (with a short 1 month lapse this past December). I go by myself and enjoy goign at my own pace, but sometimes feel it would be better to have go with others for that extra encouragement to try heavier weights and all.
Overall just curious if there are any other gym fans out there in PoF-land? (more specifically in Nova Scotia, but even in general would be great to get some hints on new or different exercises to try).

| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 5:05:27 PM | | I used to go at least 3 times a week but just got out of the routine eventually. I liked the elliptical the best but I would do a lot more too. I was always a morning person, wanting to get there before I did anything else that day. | |
|
| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 5:07:48 PM | I do 22 minutes on the treadmill then skip over to the weights ... trying to get some more time on the bikes ... but not doing so well with that part =)
The elliptical scares me ... tried it twice and my arms were mega sore the next day, both times! More sore then after I did an arm workout =)
|
| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 5:22:40 PM | | Oh yeah, I like the treadmill too but I used to walk everyday so the treadmill wasn't a big deal. I'd rather concentrate on the other equipment and work out other areas. Now, since I don't walk as much, I'd go for the treadmill too. I was sore too when I first started using the elliptical but the more I used it, the better I felt. I was never one to be into the weights. I did use the weight machines occasionally but I enjoyed using the cardio equipment the best. | |

| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 5:34:46 PM | | I love walking, go for multi-hour walks every weekend (plus a 45 minute walk on my lunch break). For the treadmill I go a bit faster, jogging and/or light running speed. Would like to get myself to the level that I could try a few marathons (did the 5 KM CIBC Run for the Cure last year, would like to do a longer run sometime though) | |

| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 6:23:27 PM | I was going to the gym as part of my physio, and I loved it. Unfortunately, I was laid off a few months ago, and can't afford the membership right now. I went alone, but I think that I'd be more likely to go on a regular basis if I went with a friend.
I spent time on the recumbent bike, treadmill (I have one at home as well), and the weight equipment. I particularly like the weight training equipment, as it really was helping for the injuries I sustained in the car accident. I'd love to get back in the gym, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.

| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 6:43:52 PM | | Steve, too bad I didn't live somewhere around your area so that I'd have somebody to walk with. Everybody was too slow to walk with me..lol I don't do speed walking or anything like that but apparently I'm too fast for some people. | |
|
| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 6:53:38 PM | Apparently I walk too fast myself ... not speed walking either, but I tend to lose people when we go from bar to bar, want to get there fast to beat the lines | |

| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 7:21:35 PM | I have an elliptical at home and I LOVE it! Works a lot of muscle groups, with a cardio workout. Recently upped the resistance and holy my butt was achy for a couple days! but that good kind of achy!
I was doing the Curves thing for a year and a half or so off and on and I enjoyed that too for the most part....but I really enjoy having the elliptical at home, so I can watch tv and not go outside to workout :p

| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 7:23:27 PM | I used to go to the gym and was working out every day after work until I realised I had a major embarrassing problem - after riding the exercise bikes when I would get off the bike I would orgasm (quietly as I possibly could, but still "get off" and it was getting difficult to explain why I was looking so happy when I had a "muscle cramp" lol) so I decided that I would stop going to the gym and do my workouts from home.
So I guess for some people going to the gym is not an option - at least for me! heartyou: Has anyone else out there had this same type of "problem"?
|
| Gym Posted: 2/7/2006 7:38:01 PM | I go to the livingroom and do martial arts workouts, XC ski, Mountain bike hardcore, downhill ski on one ski for over 2000 feet at a time on each leg, pound moguls, swim, sail, run, jump, climb, hike, play hockey, and when my dog takes me for walks it's quite a workout keeping up with her.
I'm not a big fan of gyms, except the type that have basketball nets to shoot some hoops with. Paying a membership to use a stairmaster and treadmill is about the most illogical activity I can think of.

| Gym Posted: 2/8/2006 2:54:29 AM | I go about 4 times a week. i go by myself because I find I talk too much and don't focus as much when I'm with other people. I took a week off for vacation, so I'm just getting back into the groove. I do 50 mins of cardio every night. And I try to do weights once a week. I find that I feel much better after a hard day at work. So I go in the evening after work and supper. Haven't been able to haul myself out of bed in the morning to get there before work.

| Gym Posted: 2/8/2006 3:24:29 PM | I go to the Dartmouth sportsplex 2x - 5x a week, I also use to go to Nubodys and the Y on Southpark street, also I go to the gym during some lunch breaks, I've been going to the gym for a bout 10 years. But before getting involved in the gym I walked about 10-20 miles a day, I've always been active, I love to move my body,, I find it hard sitting for to long, I'm also constantly hungry, so its hard to keep trim at times. I do weights and cardio, I used to do heavy weight lifting but I was building to much bulky muscle, so I only do free weights now and do alot of reps, I walk the treadmill uphill, or I walk the track, I never did like running so I don't run, I do alot of exercises on the stability ball, I also love hiking outside, and there is some awesome trails in Musquobobit, they are 30KM, so you do get a really good workout, it takes me and my friend 6 hours, the scenery is beautiful, its along the musquodobit river. I love fitness | |

| Gym Posted: 2/9/2006 6:12:41 AM | | I do alot of cardeo and stratches after my martial arts class. I like to get into some weighes but always afraid to ask as I may look like a wimp. Anyone have some good tips or websites to check out. I'm not looking for like body building, pill popping stuf..I justwant to get more toned and stronger I guess.. | |

| Gym Posted: 2/10/2006 8:27:08 AM | | There is a site bignda, freetrainers.com . it has lotsa info , has a sign up for free, but ya can peruse the forums and it will have virtually every question ya have. saw a forum post on how-to sites you should be able to locate quickly. Alot of those ra-ra types in there of course, but if use net common sense there are many folks in there with moderate goals and simpler workouts. | |

| Gym Posted: 2/10/2006 5:08:51 PM | | Have never had to work out have always just been in shape, 41 next to 0% body fat and because I work mainly in the construction trades body gets a work out every day. Funny I don't even get sick often. Good old gypsy genes I guess. If I was to go to a gym It would probally be alone easier to keep your mind on what your doing. | |

| Gym Posted: 2/10/2006 8:39:59 PM | | i have a home gym including an awesome eliptical and i love it - however have been going back to the gym with friends for aerobics classes - to fight the boredom thing, its always fun to do aerobics with friends and i work just as hard if not harder than usual - however i find being with others when strictly working out (unless its with a personal trainer), i find it very distracting .... as far as new exercises, im always getting new ideas online - ive got a running book where i print and paste new exercises and instructions .... internet has great stuff, also most gyms offer the option to work with some of the gym staff in coming up with/ changing programs - new exercises, etc .... good luck | |

| Gym Posted: 2/17/2006 12:32:25 PM | I go to the Sackville Sports Stadium four times a week. I do a combination of cardio and weights each time I go. The amount of cardio I do depends on what I am trying to accomplish - currently I am doing 1-1/2 hrs each visit which is a lot but I want to lose 10 lbs and that is what I have to do. Currently I run for 30 minutes to start, do about an hour of weights and then 30 minutes on the stepper and 30 minutes on the eliptical after that. I enjoy the eleptical and find it easy so I keep the best for last - just like desert :) When I am doing weights I am targeting specific muscle groups... I break it up into five - chest, shoulders, back, legs, and bicep/tricep/forearms. I will do weights for one of those five on a visit. There are two keys for me in getting to the gym: 1) Have a regular schedule if you can - I currently go on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Sat and Sun morning. 2) If you are married or have children make sure they know your schedule so they do not expect you to be around for drives etc at those times. I usually work out alone because I find if I work out with a partner we chit chat a lot. If you do hook up with a partner it is best to find someone with approximately the same strength as you or you will be forever adding and taking off plates through your workout. Going to the gym is a big part of who I am and I actually look forward to going in a weird kind of way - there is nothing better than how you feel after a good workout and the endorphins are flowing! Glad to see this thread - and know there are like minded people out there. | |

| Gym Posted: 2/17/2006 12:39:08 PM | Forgot to ask in my last post.... Sal.... where are these trails you are talking about? Sounds like exactly the kind of walk I would enjoy. My favorite I have discovered since I moved here is the walk out to Cape Split - ever been out there? Also below are some good free sites I have found that can help with developing a workout as well as proper form and technique which is critical. It is not about how much weight you are pushing but rather how you do it!

| Gym Posted: 2/26/2006 5:59:10 AM | Your doing way to much Cardio. Yes what you are doing will help you loose wieght in the moment. However that much cardio actually burns muscle tissue. Look at marathon runners they have no muscle mass. Muscle in your body burns calories, the less muscle the less calories your body needs to function(Your BMR Basil Metabolic Rate)which burns up 60 to 70 percent of the calories you burn in a day. You should limit your Cardio to no more than 30 mins 3 times a week and concentrate more on the weight training to keep you metabolism going longer. No you will not bulk up like a body builder unless that is what you strive for.
If you have any questions regarding diet or what kind of routine to use just ask I would be more than glad to help you.

| Gym Posted: 2/26/2006 10:00:13 AM | I used to goto the gym 6 days a week for at least 3hrs. I totally burned myself out doing it so I kind of stopped. Worst mistake ever. I was even paying for the membership for about a year and not going (it was my way of trying to convince myself to go) I used to be into Karate, Boxing, rollerbladeing and weight training. Going to the gym would involve: 15-20 min of stretching about 300 curls, crunches, obliques etc at least two sets of 10 of all excercises for whatever muscle group I was working that day
I was doing arms/back, shoulders/legs (I think) alternately with a day of a basic circuit to change up every now and again.
I really just need someone to kick me in the ass to get me back into it. I liked going by myself, but when you know someone is waiting for you to meet them there.. it is an incentive.

| Gym Posted: 2/26/2006 11:35:34 AM | I train 5 days/week. Training 1-2 bodyparts/day. If anyone needs any help with training. I would be happy to help you out. | |

| Gym Posted: 4/25/2006 1:15:24 PM | | I train 4-5 days a week, 1-3 bodyparts a day. I do cariod 3 x a week seperatly. Stve, I think you should get a partner to motiviate you. I find unless you're very self motivated and or/very knowledgeable, it can be tough to figure out how to change your routine. I personal train part time..and have been working out for 16 years. Don't forget to warm up before lifting and eat small frequent meals! | |

| Gym Posted: 4/25/2006 1:49:20 PM | | I went to a personal trainer for a year and a half but I had to stop because I couldn't afford it. I was in the best shape of my life. I wish I could get myself back into exercising, but maybe the improving weather will encourage me. | |
