| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/10/2006 5:09:38 AM | | I am having problems with this site, everytime I am on POF there is a pop-up that comes up saying to please take a minute to view this ad from our sponsor, it will then say to click to skip this offer or it will redirect back to POF in 10 seconds. Either way, it just brings up more ads, I have run a spyware remover program, I don't have this problem on any other site, and have been on this site for some time and never had this happen before? Any suggestions as to what to do would be greatly appreciated, as this is so aggravating. | |
|
| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/10/2006 9:06:22 AM | | What OS do you have? Perhaps you accidentaly allowed popups on POF, but I dont think this site has them since it never has asked me to allow or block them. What spyware scanners do you have? Do a complete scan of your C drive. You can also scan in safe mode which detects more hidden bugs. Your browser may have been hijacked too. | |

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/11/2006 2:50:24 AM | | hey thanks for the help:) its definetly my pc, its now doing it all the time!! I don't know why the spyware program I have is not picking it up. I have Earthlink High Speed, so I am going to run some of the programs they have. I have had really good luck with the removing them in the past but its just not working this time!! Anyhow, thanks for the advice, and hopefully I can find a new program to remove this!! | |

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/11/2006 2:02:45 PM | | i can't stand pop ups i have a blocker that came with yahoo.. some times it works others it don't | |

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/11/2006 3:21:14 PM | Have a look at this Thread: IMPORTANT --> Spyware - Popups, Homepage Changing
I have had really good luck with the removing them in the past but its just not working this time!! The very best Adware/Spyware Removal programs are only as good as they are updated. Having recently run a rather expensive corporate level tool, I discovered how limited and useless most of these 'Freebies' really are, despite all the "Rave & Raw' about them here.
I suggets downloading any and every Spyware-Removal Program you can, hopefully one of them can nab it in the butt. Alternately, use another Browser such as "Firefox" or "Opera".

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/12/2006 2:20:59 AM | | thanks Ticket :) I actually was reading thru that thread yesterday, I did download one of the free spyware removal programs listed and it would scan and show like 8 infections, remove them and then when I would go back online the same pop-ups were right there waiting, lol! I also have a syware removal program that I bought "Spyware Vanisher" that wasn't really doing much either, and generally that one seems to work great. I ended up having my roommate, who has a much better understanding of pcs then I do, take a look at it. He went in and removed a program that had been downloaded called "Wink" that seemed to be the origin of the problems, then did a system restore and things seem to be working well now. I have been trying to read and educate myself on how to stay ahead of these infections, as I have a basic working knowledge which is proving to be inadequate. I would like to purchase a program that offers protection while you are online, I have Earthlink High Speed and they offer some programs through their site, which I am looking into. For now, its working fine, and I hope to get some protection installed before any more problems arise :) Thanks again !! | |

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/12/2006 2:31:30 AM | Good to hear you got things under control ...
Use the Site's Search Feature for Virus, Adware and other 'key words' to locate existing threads that have already dealt with that Topic extensively, the Advices absolutely tops.

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/20/2006 9:38:32 AM | | Download SpyBot, it works well, or Avast, it will get rid of them. | |
|
| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/20/2006 9:58:29 AM | download ad aware, it complement spybot ver well. between the two of them, you can keep your system clean. however you still should make the effort to update them every few days. they are both free by the way but if you pay, you get more. my pc slowed down to a crawl lately and I used the combination of spybot, ad aware and registry mechanic to get back to normal. | |
|
| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/25/2006 9:20:17 PM | | if you need your PC 100% of spyware, the only program right now that can get close is spysweeper, you have to pay for it though | |

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/27/2006 5:05:01 PM | Try cleaning out your TEMP INTERNET FILES. RECENT FILES. Go into your C drive or whatever drive has your OS. EX: C:>DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS>whatever user you are mine is PRO>go toTOOLS up top>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW>scroll to and check show hidden files and folders. Go into MY RECENT DOCUMENTS and delete all files It might not let you delete one or two just work around it. Hit BACK to exit that folder>COOKIES FOLDER do the same>Exit>LOCAL SETTINGS FOLDER>TEMP AND TEMP INTERNET FILES. Delete thes files, go back to TOOLS>VIEW and uncheck SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS. You can aslo do part of this in OPTIONS in I.E.
You could also get a popup blocker tht you can personally add to it. I use System Mechanic. It is great. Does alot more also but be careful. When using other parts of it.
You actually don't need to do all of this for your issue but it doesn't hurt.
Hope this helped. Of course there are alot of other ways to do this. Just one for ya.

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/27/2006 5:08:54 PM | No offense PoopyNuts but there is absolutely no software on the maket that can get rid of adware 100%.
Symatec did a study and after they scanned for adware and Viruses they failed to find 5 combined. A pop up and Virus is as only good as the person creating the software and updates. So if they haven't come across the adware or virus then there is nor fix for it. Viruses and adware will always reach the net before it is stopped.
Again not putting ya down by any means.

No offense PoopyNuts but there is absolutely no software on the maket that can get rid of adware 100%. I beg to differ... But I think you mean , instead of "rid", prevent... I can send a link to anyone who wants free help to rid their computer of any and all known trojans/viruses

|
| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/27/2006 10:08:32 PM | Depends if you have adware in your computer at the time. Then it become "rid" but if you have none then it becomes prevent.
You just said it yourself my friend. ALL KNOWN Trojans and Viruses. Even though some Trojans and Viruses are not so harmful.
Just out of curiousity. How can you get rid or prevent something you have no idead exists?
But if top leading companies such as Symantec , Mcafee, bla bla bla fail to find a very small amount then I seriously doubt it.
Not that the site isn't good you refer to which I have no doubt it is.
The basis of malicious code is the same but it can be used in so many ways. The mind is the limit. And a hackers mind is usually a little more ahead of the game. Why do you think the CIA and the FBI use to give caught Hackers a choice? Work for us or go to jail? Becasue they knew they think out of the box where the average joe doesn't.
On a serious note I would love to know the name of the site.
Thanks | |

|
| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/28/2006 6:20:37 AM | BTW... Problems with spyware removal programs is they tend to not remove the re-spawning viruses, adware and such... You have to locate and delete or it will be reborn at every reboot of your system...
One way to ensure you do not upload most hidden agendas is to not allow active X to be downloaded to your system, do not open emails that are forwarded, never download or open attachments in any email, reply to the sender if known and ask for a link... Many programs that attack your system(s) act like they are sent from a friend and say things like "hey look at this cool photo" "check out my new car" you get the idea....

| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/28/2006 10:41:36 AM | ahh yes hijackthis, i am already familliar with it and yes it is a good tool for the advanced user, not something i would recommend to most tho, as a lot of people do not have enought understanding of computers to use it and can cause damage, could be i am wrong about this, if so someone will say so i hope | |
|
| Pop-ups! Posted: 2/28/2006 11:08:55 AM | ATRKY you are correct about HIJACKTHIS. It is excellent software. And I agree yuor software is only as good as the updates and what you let in.
I can't argue with that at all.
And you are very correct to the fellow after you. Sorry I didn't read your name. It is not for a beginner since you have to know exactly what do get delete.
System Mechanic will do roughly the same thing. Cleans out your registry bla bla bla. Even then you have to remove the folders and files from you Program Files Folder.
Have a nice day ladies and gents.

| Pop-ups! Posted: 11/11/2006 12:02:42 AM | *bump
Just thought I'd mention that I recently clicked on a thread and some porn pop-ups came up.. I was frantic because they are notorious for viruses. However I closed it and reset my blocker to not allow this site which previously did for the IMs.
So perhaps someone is spamming this site with viruses/porn???
