They were a Dutch rock band from the early 70's. They had that hit "Hocus Pocus". Anyway they were a great band, mostly instrumental rock, great guitar work. Some of their almums are:

Moving Waves (that's the album with Hocus Pocus)
In and Out of Focus
Hamberger Concerto
to name a few of my favorites.

I'm glad there are other fans here. I think they are a kick-ass band. really great guitar work, and how they do that yodelling is amazing. I had always like Hocus Pocus from the radio. But I hadn't known anything else about Focus until a frind (back in the 70's) turned me on to their other albums, like Hamgurger Concerto. Then I was hooked. There CD's are hard to find these days. I did just get myself a copy of moving waves. Actually last year a frienf from work downloaded a buch of music requuests for me. I asked for whatever he could get from Fous among other bands. He was only able to get Moving Waves as one single Mp3 file and another CD which it turned out I already had anyway. So just last Friday I finally got around to splitting the Mp3 file into it's individual tracks and then I burned them onto a CD. It was an easy task too as I had never done that before (splitting the tracks up). Then I made my burn on Nero and played it on my CD player and it played perfectly.

Me and my friend Jason had the same song on the exact same K-Tel Record! He told me that was Gerussi's vocal solo.

I recently played Hocus Pocus to some of my metalhead guitar students and just loved the reactions to all the breakdowns - especially the accordian!

Thijs van Leer, the flutist (and lead yodeller, I belive) has also gone on to do some classical recordings. They play his stuff once in a while on CBC Radio 2.
They really were a nutty band. Akkerman was a phenomenal guitarist!

Yeah, I guess they were a nutty band. But I sure like their music. And Frank Zappa and his band were even more nutty. But I really like Zappa too.

Thij Van Larsen i think was the guitarist. Superb musician. Sylvia was one of the first 45's I ever bought. Their live LP is stunning still.

I bought one of the CD's on the strength of Hocus Pocus, since that's the only things I'd ever heard from them. It was a bit jarring that none of their other songs were anything like that. Yet, their other songs are great too.

Moving Waves is a great album, but I really like Hamburger Concerto. I think that is their best one.

What about "Radar Love" from another one hit wonder ( at least in North America) Dutch band called Golden Earring ? My Dutch friends tell me they are still playing in Europe.

Loved both groups, and love Dutchies in general.

Radar Love, funny you should mention that. That is a great tune. One day while I wa checking out CD's I came across Golden Earring and bought a CD for Radar Love. It turned out that the whole CD was actually good. I didn't know that Golden Earring was a Dutch band too. And on a similar note, how about In Da Ga Da Da Vi Da by Iron Butterfly?

The "drum solo" song!! I actually have a really beat-up copy of their live recording, which sounds like it was done at some small club in Rat's Ass, Saskatchewan.
"Inna Gadda Da Vida" takes up one whole side of the record. Far out, man!!

Actually Golden Earring did have another hit in the early 80's called, Twillight Zone. Lots of classic rock stations still play it in regular rotation.

You haven't lived until you have heard Jim Croce's " Have to say I love you in a song" in Dutch.

( Daarom Noem ik Je " M N Liefste" in Een Lied - by Cornelis Vreeswijk, btw)

My sis sent me a Dutch compilation CD - and when I stumbled across that one, I just had to smile.

I couldn't remember the correct spelling, but "Inna Gadda Da Vida" is supposed to mean "In The Garden of Eden".

My favourite Focus track is the tuneful, Sylvia. I learned to play the guitar part from a magazine tab article and recorded my efforts on cassette tape, playing along to the backing track CD. Sadly, I sounded nothing like as good as Jan Akkerman. Oh well..
