| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 9:18:13 AM | Where are all the smart men in Florida??? I have to say that I have met a wide range of guys here in Florida in my year of dating since my divorce. Sweet ones, not so sweet ones, etc....but the one thing that I keep missing is a fairly intellectual and articulate guy that can rock my world and still have a heated political discussion with an informed (if somewhat opinionated ;) ) woman. Seems like all the guys down here want empty headed barbie dolls, yet then complain how the women are boring and just use them for money, etc. Well, duh... Of course, you can still be somewhat cerebral and still get a little wild and have fun sometimes. That's the dichotomy I can't find in the dating pool down here. While I'm no ten, I haven't had problems meeting some great guys, but seems like noone wants a girl with a brain and if you have one, keep it to yourself. Is it just my limited experience thus far, or are men just turned off by an intellectual woman?? | |

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 9:31:08 AM | | Nothing wrong with smart woman..I actually prefer them over a bimbo. It's the ones that think they have to tell you how smart they are that turn me off..... | |

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 9:37:19 AM | | If someone is truly "smart" they shouldn't have to tell it to anyone. You're actions, beliefs and opinions should speak for themselves (man or woman). Maybe, I'm just a bit disenchanted with the dating scene because I seem to have met alot of accomplished, confident men, but all they seem to want is a shallow high maintenance barbie doll to nod and agree with anything they say. I hate feeling like you have to compromise mental stimulation in exchange for physical attraction. | |

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 9:56:09 AM | | Funny you mention elections. THat seems to be the last time I felt truly "intellectually stimulated"....unfortunately I am somewhat of an anomoly....a Texas college educated, former veteran, Democrat. We are definitely a minority in this state full of Stepford sheep. | |

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 10:15:40 AM | I love smart ladies!

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 10:25:35 AM | Oh I wish I could leave south Florida! I know I'm overgeneralizing, but I just find 95% of the people I've encountered to be shallow, materialistic, rude, and very limited in their views. Maybe you're right, the heat fries the braincells....that would explain why we elected Bush's little brother as our Gov. Unfortunately, I stay put for now, so that my children can spend 50% of their time w/ their dad. In the meantime, just burning daylight until the next election and we start bussing some democrats back down and I have some fun new friends to hang out and debate with. | |

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 2:54:41 PM | bare with me a minute, are you looking for a relationship with a good hearted man that has morals, sense of humor and is fun to be with,or a stiff, pastey, debate club type that just wants to stimulate your mind and not your body.......In my opinion ,its not the state your in,its your state of mind, get that right and your where you need to be,and as far as being sheep ,,,,bahhh, bahhh baby you just havent been spanked by the right one yet..... | |

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/13/2006 3:32:27 PM | Your overgeneralizing my dear. It is a popular misconception perpetuated by american culture that intelligent men make poor lovers or are otherwise dull. Yes it is true that there are many geeks running around that are completely socially inept. But the same could be said of many jocks and country bumkins who are quite good at whatever it is they do but when they come to women are completely clueless. There are intelligent men out there, and there are interesting men who are skilled in the social arena...and there are men who are good at both. As for the original question...well its rather similar to why many men don't want to date women taller then them or wealthier then them. It is an old mentality that a man must be superior ( or better at everything) then the woman he dates. I think intelligence is particularly important as many men just can't handle dating a woman smarter then them. Inteligent men are usually wise enough to realize what a stupid notion this is and thus it SEEMS that men only want barbie type women because it is only the lowest common denominator among men that desire less intelligent women. I personally enjoy heated debates on political and theological issues as well as great discussions on movies and the like. I've dated my share of empty headed cheerleaders ( no insult intended to cheerleaders, just poking fun here ) and I have to say that conversations about shoes, sex and the city and what they ate for breakfast gets old fast. | |

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/14/2006 4:11:40 AM | Smart women intimidate men... I think it just that simple answer...
I personally would like to find a woman that is very bright and passionate... The brighter the better...

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/14/2006 6:50:45 AM | | LOL. I don't profess to be anything other than extremely understimulated mentally by very nice but boring guys that want to talk about their cars, the gym and sports. I have met some amazing and smart guys who stimulate BOTH mentally and physically, but they seem to prefer the girls who talk about shoes, shopping and silicone. I wasn't trying to sound like I think I'm smarter than anyone, just wish the one's that do seem to have an education, passion, and beliefs were more common and didn't just seem to gravitate to the Barbie dolls. | |

Hello, we are guys, this is all that really matters to us... and having a empty headed blonde to play with just makes it even better!!!

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/14/2006 10:30:41 AM | That's because you're 26 sweetie. That's to be expected. I just hope ten years from now you might have grown to enjoy a little more than the bimbo...In the meantime, enjoy being 26 and hot...they were some of the most fun years That being said, I still enjoy an occasional 25 yr old boy bimbo too. I said I was bored, not dead. | |

But really, i mean this whole site is nothing bout why this, why that.. Why talk bout it, why not enjoy what u do have instead of focusing on what u dont have?? I have changed my views to this type of view and really I have a new outlook on life.. just enjoy it, once all that negativity is gone people love you and look at you different!! Its awesome!!
Ok back to the boy toy thing...

Damn, wasn't trying to come off like one of those bitter, angry divorcees that seem to surround me....they really are NO fun to be around. I am genuinely curious as to how men think, since I was married for the last decade, in two major relationships prior to that and never really "dated" until now. It has been a REAL culture shock! You learn fast that times have changed and you can't believe everything you're told. I may be "book smart" but I'll admit I've been really dumb about men! Maybe I need a cute young tutor. LOL

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/14/2006 2:03:13 PM | What? I would love to have an intellectually stimulating conversation with a woman. I've been on I don't know how many dates that have left me wishing for someone who was interested in more than the latest clothing fashion or who was on the last American Idol. Ofcourse there are different kinds of smart.. someone may be mechanically gifted, but unable to count above their fingers and toes. It really does seem as if smart women (and men for that matter) are in short supply. That aside.. give me a woman who is Intellectually, Spiritually, Emotionally, and Physically stimulating and I'll marry her... lol
Oh and I didn't read ya as being "bitter" into your post.. dunno how someone got that impression... shrugs.. I've often felt the same way.
mp
btw.. Anomaly not Anomoly :)

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/14/2006 2:05:09 PM | I love smart women. Unfortunately, in my area, all I seem to run into are slack-jawed mouth-breathers. "Hot" is nice, but I need a mate who isn't lost in a conversation after "hello".
As far as politics are concerned, I'm about as independent as they come. My political debates, few though they may be, rarely follow any particular party line. I'm not wishy-washy--just selfish :) lol. I like my politicians to work for me, not the other way around.
No, texas, you don't sound bitter. I've never been married, but I've never been good at dating, either, partly for many of the reasons you've stated. Amazing, earth-shattering sex with a dim hottie may be enticing, but only the potential for mental and emotional stimulation will bring me back for seconds (well, that, coupled with amazing, earth-shattering sex).
And please, PLEASE, someone tell ME where the low-maintenance women are!

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/15/2006 4:14:38 AM | need a cute young tutor. LOL
Hey Im game!!
I never said anyone was bitter. I was just simply stating that people like to be around positive people, and if you can stay positive you will have more potential of getting that intellectual convo, instead of saying why dont men like smart women, say.. Who would like to have a convo with a smart, beautiful woman. People will look at you in a totally different way. Not only is that positive but you show self confidence in yourself which is very attractive to me.
Yes Im a gear head, mechanic, I love my sports, my virtual barbies... but I have also been to two wars, ran a multi million dollar engine room had 35 people working for me, been to over 14 different countries, blahh blahh blahh.. but u wouldnt know that unless we talked, and i dont waste my time talkin to people that start off going, where is this person, why cant I find this??

I don't think anyone really does this in real life ( other than when you're sitting around drinking wine w/ the girls lamenting our latest depressing dating adventure ), that's what I like about these forums. Kind of gives us an insight into the male perspective and vice versa. Maybe if everyone spent more time being themselves and not trying to be what they think the other sex wants, then we would all understand and enjoy each other a hell of a lot more. Life's too short to be unhappy....that's why I'm divorced! LOL

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/16/2006 3:44:48 PM | Read this and see if there ARE any smart women out there. And they talk about being real.
What Women Want in a Man They Date
When men seek out a woman for a long-term mate, the No. 1 quality they desire is physical attractiveness, while women are willing to trade a man's looks for his status and resources.
That's the word from University of Missouri-Columbia researchers, who wondered whether a woman's socioeconomic status and other factors, such as education, play a role in the trade-offs they make when choosing potential mates. Led by psychology professor David Geary, the team focused on the trade-offs low-income women make when choosing potential long-term and short-term mates. They examined if these trade-offs correlated with family background, life history development, personality or current circumstances, such as income.
The study: The researchers interviewed 460 women with an average income of less than $10,000 per year. Each woman completed a mate preference survey and surveys that assessed family background, life history, conscientiousness, sexual motives, self-ratings and current circumstances. The participants distributed 100 points across six traits of potential long-term and short-term mates, including looks, money, status, commitment, intelligence and kindness.
The results: The findings show that the most preferred characteristic in a long-term mate is commitment, followed by kindness, intelligence and looks. For short-term mates, the most preferred characteristic is looks, followed by money and kindness. The women who focused more on a short-term mate's money were less educated, more likely to require government financial assistance and had more children.
"For the women in the study, a long-term mate's status was not as important as is found in more affluent samples, perhaps because few potential mates with status are available, and a significant subset of the women assessed in the study appeared to view short-term mating relationships as a means to secure money and not 'good genes,'" Geary said in a news release announcing the study findings.
Among more affluent women, the No. 1 concern is finding a man who has a steady job and pays his bills on time, according to a different survey of 1,002 adults commissioned by Fair Isaac Corp., the company that generates the FICO scores used to rate personal creditworthiness. The Los Angeles Times reports that while men seek a woman with a great sense of humor who is a good kisser, women seek a man who is financially responsible. "And they say money can't buy you love," Judy Martindale, a financial planner in San Luis Obispo, Calif., told the Times. "It's sort of a sad commentary."

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/23/2006 1:35:40 PM | I'm just wishing I lived closer to Texas....
Thanks! Only boring Stepford sheep soccer-dads out my way.
|
| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/24/2006 6:30:01 AM | <---------------NOT a soccer dad, haven't been for years. After a few minor war games and playing 'army' some time ago, I decided to finish an education that was started in the mid 70's, finally finishing in '96, then plowing right along into a masters' program.
Along with my version of equality, I've always found 'smart', 'educated' women are pretty damn neat to hang around. Never, ever, did I feel intimidated nor supressed by an educated woman. If anything, quite the opposite.
I always advocated success and even helped my ex get thru her RN and the tough courses that go with it. Plenty of times were burning the midnight oils helping her study for exams. During that time, I learned that taking up some of the chores benefited both her and I. Cooking and cleaning and child care all became a much more important part of her success...which kinda rubbed off after all these years and still has me cooking up a storm at times and being responsible for cleaning my own place. Hell, I can even sew. The child rearing thing has come and gone however.
So, do I like and 'prefer' educated women? You betcha. And that education does not have to be in the 'formal' sense from a 4 year institution. Life educates us as well. So Texaspamc, I'm in your corner and a few of us still live in Florida.

| Why don't men like smart women? Posted: 2/24/2006 8:30:57 AM | | I'm not an anything dad -- never married, no kids. Nothing even remotely Stepford about me, Pam. Ever get over to the West coast? | |
