| Scuba diving' great locations Posted: 2/21/2006 4:45:43 PM | But the Caribbean is a pretty ordinary place to dive when compared to other good dive spots There are many places you will find that make the Caribbean fade into insignificance
I have dived cold water lakes and they are interesting as a change, but cannot compare to good salt water diving Visibility is usually not good, silt is usually stirred up very easily, life is not quite absent but getting that way, colours are usually very subdued etc
For Wrecks, Truk Lagoon is the best but several places are nearly as good
Ive probably dived in most seas but found the South Pacific to outclass the others by a long way in most respects Warm water, incredibly beautiful, lots of life Caspian Mediterranean Baltic and Adriatic are polluted to the max with little life present Antarctic/Southern Ocean is incredibly beautiful but too bloody cold and dangerous yet to look up through an Ice Cave is too cool
Haven't dived the Galapagos yet but it definitely on my list Really want to swim with those iguanas .. .

| Scuba diving' great locations Posted: 2/25/2006 11:56:04 PM | Probably the best dive I've been on is The Catacombs off MacKay Queensland Australia
Other places have been great and some better in some respects, but none have had everything it offers
Huge coral caves with light filtering through as it does through stained glass windows Vast amounts of marine life everywhere Very big area to dive Just awesome Mainly shallow so no decompression needed and all the colours are there So long dives, full of beauty, in warm water, and fairly easily accessible
Can't get much better than that .. .

If you are referring to the "Blue Hole" in Egypt, that would be outside of Dahab in the Sea of Aqaba. For access to the Red Sea, check out Sharm ash Shaykh or Hurghada. Dahab is by far the cheapest of the three.

| Scuba diving' great locations Posted: 3/12/2006 11:33:10 AM | No, they are referring to the famoue Blue Hole right off the coast of Belize. I dove the Barrier Reef for 6 days there (stayed on the island of Ambergris Caye for 8 days) about 2-1/2 yrs ago. Belize's Barrier Reef is the 2nd largest coral reef in the world they say, second to Australia's Great Barrier Reef of course.
Anway, to the Blue Hole experience... completely boring and a waste of time/money/whole day in my opinion only. You will get the same opinion from most of the Belizans there too.
The only reason they tell me you dive the Blue Hole is to say you've done it. It's just a big giant hole that all you do is just dive straight down the wall of, nothing much to see and then you ascend. Big fat deal. Yahoo. It takes you the entire day of your vacation and it's a huge letdown, but you can buy the T-shirt when you're done, yippee!!
I'd spend my time and money on a million other things to do there before I could recommend the Blue Hole. I'm sure there are others who share a different take on it, but that's how I view it~

| Scuba diving' great locations Posted: 3/13/2006 5:42:40 PM | Tobermory is pretty cool... and cold! If you ever want to do some fresh water diving on wrecks, GO TO TOBERMORY! I learned how to dive there.
But I've had the pleasure of working in the Caribbean and diving in one of the most revered spots.... wall diving in Grand Turk in the Turks & Caicos Islands.
You can dive in the morning and then spend the afternoon on a beach that would be crowded anywhere else in the Caribbean and not see a soul. That is the beauty of Grand Turk. Relatively unknown, but spectacular and well worth a dive trip for a week. I wouldn't go more than that... it is a small island. Check out www.oasisdivers.com for pictures and consider it a reference to a good dive outfitter too. I've used them all in this island, but these guys are the best.
I've been on this island about a combined 4 months over 5 years.

| Scuba diving' great locations Posted: 3/16/2006 10:44:14 AM | Did a Great White Shark Dive with an outfit called Rodney Fox GWS adventures. Operated out of a suburb of Adelaide called Glenelg, you steam overnight in an old clipper ship called the Falie, to a place called the Neptune Isands. Lots of Great Whites, giant rays....best diving experience by far. A distant second would probably be my dive in Easter Island. | |

Forgive my spelling but grabbed these out of my old notebooks
Honauna Bay; Kona is not bad and accessible from shore or boat To the East and South East there is Puhi Bay and Leilewei which were good mid water dives from shore; Richardsons for snorkling
Some spots have Lava Tubes etc Pretty cool and different
Put a good mark against a place called Suck em Up, but can't remember why exactly
Mahaiula?? and Milloli?? are only for experienced divers but are marked as good .. .

| Scuba diving' great locations Posted: 3/20/2006 10:16:39 PM | | I first learned to dive on the remote west side of the Queen Charlotte Islands, Tasu. It is cold and the fresh rainwater mixes in with the salt water for a few feet. The underwater cliffs some covered with a small purple coral that descends into blackness, scary. The gardens of different coloured sea anenimees, and the sleeping schools of Alaskan grey or black cod. Swimming into a school of jelly fish when they gather to spawn. Some amazing coral although small but colourful. It was wild and virgin territory. Always was cautious in diving when the killer whales came into the Sound to feed, rest and mate. When one was tired of diving the old growth cathedral forests were incredible, the sun filtering through the trees and us resting on a thick carpet of moss. Climbing the mountains that project directly from the ocean above the tree line, spectacular. Belize was good also and the water was warmer stayed at Key Calker. | |

| Scuba diving' great locations Posted: 5/7/2006 8:21:33 PM | | i've only done warm-water diving in the Bahamas, so I don't know all the tropical places. Lake Wazee in Wisconsin is a pretty popular place for the Twin Cities metro area, Madison, Chicago....it's kind of in-between a lot of major areas. It used to be an iron ore mine that was shut down and turned into a 330-foot deep man-made lake. Incredible rock formations, sheer cliffs, some artificacts. The clarity is good for a Midwest lake too. The first thermocline is usually about 30 feet dropping to the 50s, and another in the 60 foot range going into the low 40s or upper 30s. I use a 7mil full wetsuit with a 5 mil shorty over it. I can only handle the cold for so long....but I dive a 80 on air, and haven't taken the plunge to get a drysuit, nitrox, dualies, etc.....to enjoy longer, deeper dives. | |
